Goodyear’s EfficientGrip Fitted on UK Police Fleets

The police are always the first port of call for those in need of help securing personal safety, but they can only come to the aid of the needy if they themselves have taken the proper precautions. One of the prerequisites for road safety is a tyre up to the job of keeping the car where it should be – even when higher demands than your average drive are made of it. That is why Goodyear, in the run up to October’s tyre safety month, is talking about the fitment of its new tyre, the EfficientGrip to Bedfordshire police, Hertfordshire police and Thames Valley’s police fleet vehicles.

Exhaust Tyres Batteries Holds Charity Tyre Safety Event

Exhaust Tyres Batteries (ETB) Group, part of Bridgestone’s First Stop network of tyre dealerships, recently held an event to educate drivers in Kidderminster about the importance of tyre safety whilst at the same time raising money for charity. Staff from the Kidderminster and Stourport branches of ETB and representatives from First Stop were on hand at Sainsbury’s in Kidderminster, carrying out free tyre checks and offering motorists top-tips to help them stay safe, save money and reduce their carbon footprint whilst on the road.

National Offer Free Checks to Support Tyre Safety Month

National Tyres and Autocare have announced plans to support this year’s Tyre Safety Month by offering customers free tread, pressure and general condition checks for their tyres. According to the company, National are supporting this year’s TyreSafe-initiated campaign to highlight the importance of well maintained tyres, particularly, tyre tread, with customer leaflets and posters in branch. National are also using direct communications with customers including emailers and vouchers urging them to check their tread and if in doubt to drop into branches for a free check.

Tony Neill, Chief Executive Officer, commented: “As a founding member of TyreSafe, National is highly committed to tyre safety and by offering these free checks, our customers can be confident that their tyres are performing correctly, especially during the autumn and winter months ahead.”

Txt Spk Safety Scholar Wins Bridgestone Contest

Bridgestone’s annual US Safety Scholars contest has a 2009 winner, in addition to two runners-up, all of whom will receive $5,000 towards their college studies and a set of Bridgestone or Firestone tyres. The competition highlighted a wealth of creative talent, as entrants took their cue from an eclectic range of inspirations including rap videos, emotional personal stories and important topical issues.

20p Coin a ‘Life Saver in Your Pocket’: TyreSafe

The latest TyreSafe campaign materials are soon to be released on the not-for-profit organisation’s website in time for October’s Tyre Safety Month. Focusing on tread depth, the new resources will encourage drivers to check and replace any illegal tyres on their vehicle by introducing the theme of a ‘life saver in your pocket', which suggests that motorists can check the safety and legality of their tyres using the edge of a 20 pence coin. Materials are provided free of charge to the trade and include a reception poster, a point of sale leaflet, a website banner and a safety advice movie.

Handle the Pressure with Richbrook

A most useful addition has been made to the motorist’s arsenal: Richbrook has released a digital tyre pressure guage that is not much bigger than the average keyring, yet boasts an accurate gauge that measures in both PSA and BAR to a +/- 1 per cent level of accuracy – a degree of accuracy typically found in much larger units. Study Reveals High Proportion of Dangerously Worn Tyres in Use

If Doctor Foster had gone to Gloucester in 2009 he’d have had more to worry about than puddles. According to a three-month study carried out by the Chris Mullins Tyres, more than three quarters of motorists in the southwest town are leaving it too late before they replace worn, damaged and potentially dangerous tyres. Staff at the Gloucester based tyre specialist found that almost 77 per cent of the 3,050 tyres they examined from cars, 4x4s and light vans between May and the end of July were already worn below the legal limit of 1.6mm.

Swinton Survey Outs Van Tyre Safety Ignorance

According to a recent poll of 1,000 commercial van driving customers, Swinton Insurance has revealed that 25 per cent of the segment never checked the condition or tread of their tyres, while 42 per cent did not know the correct legal tread depth.

TyreSafe and RoadSafe Partner

TyreSafe and RoadSafe have formalised a reciprocal agreement. The collaboration will see the organisations working more closely together, taking an active part in each other’s development and initiatives to reduce the number of casualties and accidents on the UK’s roads. TyreSafe has become a full member of RoadSafe meaning it will take a seat on its advisory panel, while RoadSafe has joined TyreSafe as an associate member.

UK and Ireland Europe’s Top Tyre Safety Offenders

The UK and Ireland are reportedly Europe’s worst offenders when it comes to driving with dangerous tyres. That’s the verdict of tyre manufacturer Michelin, which is embarking on its sixth year of running Fill Up With Air, a European tyre safety campaign. Based on checks of 50,000 cars across 27 countries, only Latvia, Greece, Lithuania and Estonia have a worse record with Austria and Germany being consistently the most safety conscious. Out of 5,000 UK cars surveyed by Michelin in 2007/08, more than 43 per cent were found to have “dangerously” under-inflated tyres, risking an accident. (For the purposes of this campaign dangerous means between 8 and 14 psi off recommend pressures).

Motoring journalist Vicki Butler-Henderson, who is promoting the campaign, said: “Tyres are the only contact a vehicle has with the road and it always amazes me how little care we take as a nation in terms of looking after them. We have to remember that cars are potential lethal weapons and it is our duty to ensure that we make them as safe as possible and minimise the risk of potentially lethal accidents.”

Malaysia Clamping Down on Regrooved Tyres

Motorists in Malaysia have been warned that regrooved is not groovy – drivers of vehicles fitted with regrooved tyres have until November 1 to replace them with new or retreaded tyres approved by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM) before risking a fine.

“We will educate the public on the basic knowledge of tyre safety by distributing posters containing information on tyre care nationwide,” said Datuk Suret, director general of Malaysia’s Road Safety Department. He added that an educational campaign, including posters bearing message such as ‘Retread Tyres Are Safe To Use’ and ‘Your Car Is Only As Safe As Your Tyres’ will be distributed throughout the country. The department will also work with various agencies, including the Customs Department, to take action against retailers that sell tyres not meeting safety standards.

TyreSafe Appoints Red Marlin Communications

TyreSafe has appointed Red Marlin Communications to handle its national PR. The appointment takes effect immediately and will see the company “working to raise awareness of tyre-related safety issues across a wide range of consumer, trade and business audiences.” As well as developing a stream of regular news and educational stories, the agency is aiming to help TyreSafe engage with relevant stakeholder groups to widen the distribution of its tyre safety messages.

First Stop Says Safety Roadshow a “Success”

Bridgestone-supported dealer network First Stop has over the past few months held a series of roadshow appearances across the UK, helping to educate drivers about the importance of tyre safety. The events involved the First Stop team visiting nationwide locations to raise awareness of the importance of checking tyre pressures and depth. The decision to do so was inspired by Bridgestone’s recent online survey, which showed that over 88 per cent of motorists don’t check their tyre pressures weekly (according to 1,500 female and male UK car drivers, aged 18-55+ years questioned in March 2009).

Speaking about the roadshow Dan Woodward, retail marketing analyst for First Stop said, “This was a great opportunity for us to get out and meet new and existing customers. We were surprised by how many motorists taking advantage of the free tyre checks were driving on tyres which were incorrectly inflated or had dangerous levels of tread depth.”
