Hankook CEO Says Industry Needs to Pull Together on Consumer Education

In his keynote speech at the Tire Society annual conference yesterday in Akron, Hankook Tire Co. president and CEO Seung Hwa Suh called on the global tyre industry to pull together to improve consumer tyre education, reports Tire Review. And Suh warned that tyre-makers needed to be more mindful of their impact on the environment. Suh’s comments came on the first day of the 29th annual Tire Society Annual Meeting and Conference on Tire Science and Technology.

Stats Show Dangerous Tyre Convictions on the Rise

When the Ministry of Justice releases data on driving convictions for 2009 on October 21 we will finally get to see whether or not a shameful trend has been reversed. The most recently available information shows a total of 4,317 drivers were successfully prosecuted by courts in England and Wales for driving on defective tyres during 2008, an increase of 14 per cent on the previous year. This information was released by the Ministry of Justice in response to a parliamentary question by Stoke-on-Trent MP, Tristram Hunt and shows the figure to be at a seven-year high, up from a low of 3,595 convictions in 2006.

Michelin Fill Up With Air Campaign the “Biggest to Date”

Michelin says drivers in the UK are losing out on more than £440 million pounds by driving with the under-inflated tyres. The French giant is publicising the effects of this perpetual problem via its Fill Up With Air roadshow, on which a Michelin team offers free tyre checks. Michelin’s research, based on a parc of 30.3 million cars driving 12,000 miles per annum at 35mpg, with fuel costing £1.20 per litre, suggests more than 370 million litres of fuel are being wasted each year.

Roadsafe: MOT Must Stay Annual

RoadSafe is urging transport minister Mike Penning, to maintain the MOT test as an annual check-up for vehicles. In 2008, the Department for Transport said the MOT failure rate was high, at 35 per cent. Between 2009 and 10, the failure rate continued its steady increase to 37 per cent. Despite this, the DfT is looking into reducing the required frequency of tests to fall in line with Europe.

In the UK, vehicles must have their first test within three years of registration, and annual tests thereafter. As a minimum, EU law requires vehicles to have their first test when they are four years old and subsequent tests every two years. Most European countries follow the EU minimum requirement and there is pressure on the UK to do the same. RoadSafe is warning that this will lead to more crashes, caused by poorly maintained vehicles.

Wheel alignment equipment supplier Pro-Align has become the latest company to join TyreSafe. Pro-Align will support the industry’s safety awareness group’s ongoing campaigns which raise awareness about the dangers associated with defective and illegal tyres. The company will also provide specialist knowledge and advice relating to wheel alignment issues.

Cooper Encourages Staycationers to Inflate Tyres Correctly

Cooper Tire Europe has urged motorists to check tyre pressures at least monthly and before long trips, and to refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook for the correct pressure when travelling fully laden, with the trend for overseas holidays down 15 per cent amongst Britons last year. The company suggests the average family car carrying a full family on holiday will have to transport an additional 201kg in passengers and luggage, compared to the typical ‘driver-only’ car journey. Cooper says many do not realise they need to set their tyre pressures to compensate for the additional load being placed on the tyres in order to reduce the risk of accidents and premature tyre wear.

This year during tyre safety month TyreSafe says it will build on last year’s campaign by focusing on family audiences and highlighting the simplicity of checking tyre tread depth with a 20p coin. Question of the Month: Should Tyre Age Be Inspected in the MOT Test?

August’s Question of the Month on tyrepress.com asks readers whether the recent news that a coroner has written to the DfT recommending more attention be paid to tyre age means that tyre age should be inspected as part of MOT tests. So far, the overwhelming majority seems to think it should, with only one reader suggesting tyre age should stay off the MOT agenda. Consumer Magazine Questions California Inflation Regulations

Consumer Reports magazine is not a big fan of new California regulations that will force all auto service centers to check and adjust tyre air pressure for any customer vehicle they service, reports Tire Review. While acknowledging the fuel-savings and greenhouse gas reducing benefits of properly inflated tyres, the magazine suggested the new law could lead to unintended confusion and results.

Malaysian Motorists Warned Against Regrooved Car Tyres

A disapproving finger has been pointed at regrooved passenger car tyres in Malaysia. The country’s assistant infrastructure development minister, Pang Yuk Ming, has cited the use of regrooved tyres as a factor contributing to accidents in Malaysia. His comments were printed by Malaysia’s Daily Express newspaper.

TyreSafe Warns Bikers Tyre ‘Squaring’ Danger

As National Motorcycle Week kicks off, TyreSafe is warning riders that continuous upright riding on fast straight routes can harm their bikes’ tyres. Long journeys on motorways can cause the meeting of the tyre’s sidewall and tread to ‘square-off’, which gives a feeling of loss of grip when the bike is used on winding roads, according to the safety association. Often on long journeys motorcyclists switch from the motorway to fast A- and B-roads, without knowing their bikes’ handling may be compromised.

ATS Euromaster credits the strength of its 24/7 nationwide rapid response service as critical in the securing of a new agreement to fit tyres across Acumen’s 40-strong fleet of car transporters. The tyre industry’s Responsible Recycler Scheme now has the support of TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation. TyreSafe states that it hopes to help cut the number of illegal part-worn tyres entering the market and encourage safer worker practices within tyre dealers, garages and workshops.

TyreSafe Highlights Caravan Tyre Checks Following UK’s Bright Early June

Whether your attitude towards caravans could best be described as “enthusiastic” or “Clarksonesque”, one potential problem for the holiday home on wheels has possibly escaped you: the degradation of its tyres during idle Winter months. With one of the brightest start to Summer since records began, UK safety organisation TyreSafe has taken the opportunity to address the problem, suggesting that caravan owners should pay particular attention to the condition of their tyres before heading off on holiday this year. Since caravans often stand unused for much of the off-season, there is a strong potential for tyre related problems to develop – such as cracking caused by the sun’s UV rays – making them unsafe or dangerous to use. To help owners identify such problems, TyreSafe, the UK’s leading tyre safety organisation, has launched a new section on its website at www.tyresafe.org dedicated to caravan tyre safety.
