Senior executives from the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport, the Freight Transport Association, the Road Haulage Association and Transport for London have joined forces with Transaid to organise a charity bike ride from London to Paris, with the aim of raising £100,000 to support Transaid's Professional Driver Training projects in Africa.
At the recent Tyre Recovery Association annual dinner, held at the Ardencote Hotel, Warwickshire, TyreSafe honoured the winners of its outstanding achievement accolade for 2012. Chris Downes from Chandlers BMW and Phil Barrow from Sussex Police were present to receive the award on behalf of their respective organisations. The award announcement came hot on the heels of news that Sussex Police has signed up as an official TyreSafe supporter.
Sussex Police is TyreSafe’s latest supporter in its campaign to raise awareness about tyre safety and maintenance. Although the south coast constabulary joined forces with TyreSafe for last year’s Tyre Safety Month, this year will see a big increase in involvement, actively promoting a number of campaigns aimed at educating road users about the importance of tyre safety.
A woman wearing a brightly coloured outfit that may or may not be “Her Majesty the Queen” has issued motorists with a Bank Holiday safety message on a recent visit to HiQ Tamworth. With the jubilee weekend celebrations coming this weekend, “Elizabeth” visited HiQ – minus Philip and her corgis – to urge drivers to get free safety checks ahead of their Bank Holiday journeys. The royal appointment was organised in an attempt to educate motorists about the importance of regular vehicle health checks, and the HiQ-ueen recorded a video for her subjects on the matter: http://youtu.be/MvrCjer-88A.
Shell UK has announced plans to bring back forecourt attendants at more than 300 of its petrol stations by the end of the summer, rising to 600 locations by mid-2013. As well as dispensing fuel, the AA-trained staff will also offer basic car maintenance, such as checking tyres.
ATS Euromaster will service tyres fitted to global transport and logistics specialist DSV’s 7,000-strong European trailer fleet, having secured the major three year contract. ATS Euromaster’s team of mobile technicians will provide complete tyre maintenance, comprising routine tyre safety inspections and any follow-up service work, to up to 1,000 DSV trailers transiting through the UK every day. The company says it will be fitting “premium remould tyres”, supplied predominantly by Vacu-Lug and Encore, to the trailers, replacing a former Bridgestone policy.
With hot weather continuing to prevail across the UK, TyreSafe is pre-empting the arrival of millions of drivers on the roads in the coming Spring Bank Holiday weekend – extended by the presence of the Queen’s Jubilee celebration on 5 June. Tyrepress.com will be spending the bank holidays in Essen for Reifen 2012, but those not heading to Europe’s premier tyre event should check their tyres to avoid risking motoring misery. “We want people to enjoy their holidays and arrive safely at their destinations, so that’s why we’re urging them to do a few simple tyre checks before they head off and this includes the spare wheel as well. The great news is that these inspections are quick and simple yet pay real dividends,” said Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.
TyreSafe is urging motorcyclists to check their tyres before heading out on the roads in time for the later than normal Spring Bank Holiday, which also includes the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations the next day. The weekend overlaps with the Isle of Man TT races, meaning many more bikers will be heading out to watch the action, making pre-journey tyre checks even more important.
Road safety organisation TyreSafe has re-elected Stuart Jackson for the second time as its chairman for a further two years. Membership at the organisation has enjoyed continued growth during Jackson’s tenure, started in 2009, extending to car manufacturers, insurers, equipment suppliers and other relevant road safety bodies such as police forces, the Highways agency and the Association of Chief Fire Officers. TyreSafe was also awarded the Prince Michael International Safety Award, which recognises achievement and innovations which will improve road safety, in 2009
Industry safety body, TyreSafe launched its tyre labelling educational material ahead of the scheme’s 1 July voluntary introduction at its latest briefing on 3 May. The event was called the biggest and most successful industry briefing since the organisation started them last year, with more than 170 delegates attending and participating.
Empty pockets? Strapped for cash? Being short of a bob or two can make life unpleasant, but it is never a reason to risk the safety of yourself and others. TyreSafe, the UK campaign group dedicated to exactly what its name suggests, says that hard-up motorists who opt for part worn tyres are doing exactly that.
TyreSafe has sealed the deal on another new member. Tyre sealant supplier Air-Seal Products joined the tyre retailers and distributors, car manufacturers, insurers and public bodies promoting tyre safety already in the not-for-profit organisation. “Air-Seal Products will be a valuable addition to TyreSafe, says chairman Stuart Jackson. “Indeed, it seems particularly appropriate that Air-Seal should join TyreSafe as its products are designed to prevent punctures and have a heavy emphasis on making driving safer.
Collision-avoidance technologies, which could help eliminate cyclist and pedestrian deaths caused by driver 'blind-spots', should be made mandatory for all UK buses and lorries by 2015, according to a new report from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The 'Intelligent Transport Intelligent Society' report also calls for automated emergency response systems to be integrated into all new road vehicles within the next two years. These systems automatically alert emergency services in case of an accident – even if a driver is unconscious – as well as providing the exact location of the accident using Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
Michelin and ATS Euromaster will stage a ‘Fill up with Air’ roadshow at the Eurotunnel Le Shuttle terminal in Folkestone on Thursday 5 and Friday 6 April 2012, between 7am and 3.30pm, offering free tyre safety inspections for departing vehicles. Seven tyre specialists will check tread depths and pressures, inspecting tyres for potential safety hazards like objects penetrating the tread or lumps, bulges, cracks or tears to the sidewalls. The roadshow will offer free on-site puncture repairs for the first time, thanks to ATS-E’s involvement.
British Superbike Championship rider Chris Walker has lent his support to TyreSafe’s PACT campaign. Despite being just days away from the championship’s opening round at Brand Hatch on 6 April, Walker has found time to help promote the vitally important issue of motorbike tyre safety.
