TyreSafe Calls on Experienced Motorcyclists to Promote Tyre Safety

TyreSafe and the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) are calling on experienced bikers to help promote tyre safety among motorcyclists. With increasing numbers of motorcyclists taking to the road this spring, TyreSafe and the IAM are advising experienced bikers and biking enthusiasts to help raise awareness of the importance of riding on safe tyres. During April’s Bike Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe is reaching out to motorcyclists of all levels, including enthusiasts, with a reminder that correct tyre maintenance helps keep bikers safe on the road, and may ultimately save their life. As the improved weather conditions attract thousands of bikers to rallies and race meetings around the country, TyreSafe advises checking the pressure, tread depth and condition of tyres before setting off on long journeys.

TyreSafe Promotes Bike Tyre Awareness

In the run-up to April’s Bike Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe is calling on tyre retailers to help raise awareness of the importance of tyres in bike safety. Statistic from VOSA reveal that in 2007/08, defective or illegal tyres was recorded as the fourth most common MoT failure defect. Worryingly, the number of MoT failures attributed to defective tyres has grown year on year for the past three years, increasing from 2.8 per cent of motorcycles tested in 2005/06 to 4.8 per cent in 2007/08. Meanwhile, motorcycle fatality rates remain high, with Department for Transport figures showing that in 2007, 588 motorcyclists died in road traffic accidents, accounting for 20 percent of all fatalities on the road.

Volkswagen Group UK First Car Company to Join TyreSafe

Volkswagen Group UK Ltd has become the first vehicle manufacturer to join TyreSafe. The five brands which make up the Group – Audi, SEAT, Škoda, Volkswagen and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles – have become full members and will participate in a series of national campaigns highlighting the importance of tyres in road safety.

“The addition of a vehicle manufacturer to our organisation is an important step forward for TyreSafe,” comments Rob Beddis, chairman, TyreSafe. “As we continually expand and engage with the wider automotive industry, the Volkswagen Group’s extensive experience of dealing with motorists and fleets will be invaluable to future TyreSafe campaigns. We look forward to receiving a fresh perspective and input, helping to reduce the number of accidents caused by defective tyres.”

TyreSafe: Past, Present and Future

Tyre safety body TyreSafe has come a long way since its birth as the Tyre Industry Council in 1992. Chairman, Rob Beddis, explains the evolution of the organisation, what it stands for, its achievements to date and its plans for the future.

TyreSafe as an organisation officially took shape in January 2007, with the aim of evolving into the UK’s leading tyre safety industry body. The Tyre Industry Council was originally formed by tyre industry associations with the intention of raising consumer awareness of the dangers of illegal or defective tyres. The original membership comprised the British Rubber Manufacturers Association (BRMA), now the British Tyre Manufacturers Association (BTMA), and the Imported Tyre Manufacturers Association along with support from major tyre retailers.

“We Have a Job to Do”

With 15 years of experience in the aftermarket components sector, Stuart Jackson was not completely unfamiliar with the tyre business when he joined Vredestein a year ago. Having said that, 12 months after becoming UK managing director, Jackson admits that changing lanes into the tyre segment is also “a really good challenge.” In his words he is “very happy to bring a fresh perspective to the business.” In a recent interview with Tyres & Accessories Jackson reflected on the last year revealed details of Vredestein’s plans for 2009.

2008 has reportedly been a “very successful year” for Vredestein – with the company predicting that its UK operations are on track to report a 16 per cent growth rate year-on-year. According to Jackson this does not simply reflect tyre sales volume, but rather “organic financial growth” and “great commitment” from dealers. Some months are said to have been better than others, but by working flexibly with its partners order fill rates have been “consistently high.”

RIAS Supports Tyre Safety Month

Insurance firm RIAS has given its “full backing and support” to Tyre Safety Month, the insurance firm has announced. “Any initiative that helps improve driver safety and reduce the number of accidents on our roads has our full backing and support,” said Janet Connor, managing director at the over 50s insurance services specialist, adding: “It’s vitally important, especially in winter when conditions are worse, to encourage drivers to think more carefully about those small and inexpensive checks that could help save lives.”

TyreSafe Warns of Handling Issues Linked to Under-Inflated Tyres

Drivers are facing an increased risk of being involved in a serious or even fatal accident by failing to regularly check their tyre pressures. This warning has been issued by UK tyre safety organisation TyreSafe as part of Tyre Safety Month, held throughout October.

“Although the majority of motorists are uninterested in their vehicle’s tyres, it is important to remember that they are a complex component of the vehicle that have been engineered to work in harmony with the vehicle’s sophisticated brake, steering and suspension systems and must be taken seriously,” explains TyreSafe chairman Rob Beddis. “Without regularly ensuring that tyres are correctly inflated, motorists risk compromising the way that their car behaves on the road. The first time they may become aware of this performance deficit could be when they lose control of the vehicle on an innocuous bend and are heading towards a hedgerow or into the path of an oncoming vehicle.”

Suzuki Announces Support for Tyre Safety Month

Suzuki GB has become the first vehicle manufacturer to pledge support for the 2008 Tyre Safety Month campaign. As part of its commitment to the TyreSafe initiative, until the end of October Suzuki is offering free tyre safety checks at participating dealers in the automaker’s franchised network in the UK.

NTDA Awarded TyreSafe Awareness Prize

Tyresafe has given the National Tyre Distributors Association its tyre safety award for the NTDA’s contribution to raising public awareness of the importance of tyre safety. The NTDA was recognised for its contribution British Tyre Manufacturer’s Association (BTMA) Tyre Industry Dinner in Solihull on 26th September 2008. Rob Beddis, chairman of TyreSafe, presented the TyreSafe award to NTDA chairman Peter Gaster. The NTDA says that the award is a tribute to the association’s hard work and commitment to keeping Britain’s motorists safe on the roads.

“The NTDA has made a significant contribution to raising awareness of the importance of tyre safety and are worthy recipients of the TyreSafe award,” said Beddis. “NTDA members have given their full support to Tyre Safety Month, and have also been rigorous in running their own tyre safety campaigns, notably the recent tyre ageing campaign held in conjunction with the RAC Foundation, which reached out to motorists via TV, radio and press to raise awareness of the dangers of driving on over-aged tyres.”

Grouptyre to add Value through Service Initiative

In 14 months of Peter Harries’ leadership, Grouptyre – the UK’s leading independent tyre wholesaler – enjoyed sales growth in excess of 15 per cent. Attempting to continue this period of growth is Grouptyre’s new MD, Karl Naylor (see page XX) who has worked as the company’s director of commercial operations since 2005. He and the company remain committed to supporting manufacturers and meeting the needs of independent retailers, national account customers and franchised dealerships by improving service levels and adding value throughout the supply chain.

Grouptyre, with its network of 13 members in 33 UK locations (including Northern Ireland), is convinced of the key role it plays within the industry, presenting the wholesaler as “a buffer to smooth availability peaks and troughs.” Since manufacturers produce in batches and cannot afford to hold all products in stock at all times for on-demand orders, they require an intermediary to ease stock congestion. In addition, retailers have neither the space nor the financial muscle to carry all suppliers’ products for on-demand orders. However they do require a readily available supply of the tyres they do not stock, along with a fast and frequent delivery service, to secure consumer sales.

Protyre Supporting Tyre Safety Month With Free Tyre Inspections

As recent statistics released by TyreSafe testify, many motorists are ignoring their own safety and that of other road users by not checking the condition of the tyres on their vehicle. To help reverse this dangerous situation, in support of Tyre Safety Month all 31 Protyre outlets in the UK will be offering motorists a free five-point tyre safety check. This free offer can be taken advantage of during the entire campaign, which runs until October 31.

Tyre Inflation Message Still Ignored, Says TyreSafe

The message is still not getting through, says TyreSafe. Motorists are continuing to place their own lives, as well as those of passengers and other road users at risk by ignoring the dangers of incorrect tyre inflation. As Tyre Safety Month gets underway, the safety organisation has reported on Department for Transport statistics showing that illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor in the death of 43 motorists in 2007, and played a part in a further 984 accidents.

Tyre Safety Month Gets Underway

It might not be October just yet, but Tyre Safety Month began in earnest yesterday when TyreSafe demonstrated the effects of driving with under-inflated tyres at the Millbrook test centre in Bedfordshire. This year’s awareness raising campaign puts simple tyre pressure maintenance well and truly at the centre of the safety agenda. When October’s Tyre Safety Month begins, TyreSafe will use publicity in the print, online and broadcast media to advise motorists to check their tyre pressures and stay safe on the roads. TyreSafe’s demonstrations clearly showed the market negative effects of driving with underinflated tyres particularly with regard to: cornering, handling, fuel economy and temperature.

According to TyreSafe, the latest statistics released by the Department for Transport show that illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor in the deaths of 43 motorists in 2007, and played a part in a further 984 accidents. New research conducted by TyreSafe has highlighted the scale of the problem, with more than half of motorists surveyed admitting that they had not checked their tyre pressure in the last month, the maximum period recommended by TyreSafe between pressure checks.

October is Tyre Safety Month

This year’s Tyre Safety Month will take place in October. This year’s focus will be on the importance of tyre pressure in vehicle safety. TyreSafe – the new name for the Tyre Industry Council – states on its website that it “welcomes garages, tyre fitters and tyre dealers to play their part in helping motorists to understand the dangers of under and over-inflated tyres, as well as raising awareness of how, where and when to check tyre pressure.”

TyreSafe has published a range of downloadable content on its website www.tyresafe.org. In addition, the organisation says that “a limited amount of printed material is also available by calling 0207 457 5040 (8.30am-5pm Monday to Friday).”

Viking International Promotes Tyre Safety Month

Viking International has confirmed its support of the annual Tyre Safety Campaign. Launched by TyreSafe last October, the month long consumer campaign will highlight the benefits of correctly inflated tyres to motorists and also raise awareness on how and when to check tyre pressure.

To support the campaign, Viking International is urging its customers involved in tyre services to offer consumers free tyre pressure checks throughout the month of October. Customers who would like to get involved can access a number of promotional materials available to download from the TyreSafe website, including free posters, leaflets and a press advert template to help support the campaign.
