TyreSafe Achieves International Recognition with Road Safety Award

TyreSafe has been internationally recognised for its ongoing contribution to motoring security. Friday’s steering committee meeting was punctuated by the lunchtime presentation of the Prince Michael International Safety Award: Recognising achievement and innovations which will improve road safety. Vredestein managing director and chairman of TyreSafe, Stuart Jackson declared himself, on behalf of the whole organisation, “ecstatic about the award”, saying that it represents an “accreditation of what we believe in”, as an organisation that cuts across company divisions.

Blackcircles: 60 per cent of Drivers Now Considering Part Worns and Retreads

Nearly 60 per cent of motorists would now consider buying part-worn or retread tyres for their cars, compared to just 35 per cent three years ago. That’s the conclusion of a study conducted by online tyre retailer Blackcircles.com, published to coincide with Tyre Safety Month. Publicising the conclusions of the data in an official statement, Blackcircles MD Mike Welch made the expected warnings about part worn quality, but made a surprising comparison with what he called “sub standard” retreads.

“Buying part worn tyres and retreads might seem like a thrifty alternative to new tyres but it’s vital that motorists also understand the risks. Part-worns and retreads are effectively second hand – they have already been used for an unspecified number of miles with a different vehicle and so are inherently sub-standard compared to brand new models,” Welch commented, adding:

Survey Unearths Safety Sloppiness Amongst Company Car Drivers

A survey conducted by TyreSafe has again shone a spotlight onto the UK motoring public’s inability to regularly check tyre tread depth. The organisation probed a sample group of 1,552 company car drivers from across the UK and was astounded to find an alarming 25 per cent had never – ever – checked the depth of their vehicle’s tyre tread. A further 41 per cent had not deigned their own safety and that of others sufficient reason to kneel down and take a look under the wheel arches during the last six months. Yet, notes TyreSafe, responsibility for tyre safety on fleet vehicles is the responsibility of both companies and employees, and those not making the necessary checks face fines and other penalties. To simplify the task of checking tyre tread, companies are being encouraged to promote TyreSafe’s ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ initiative – which encourages simple monthly checks using a 20p coin – to their employees.

Michelin Educates Large Fleet Customer, Lloyds TSB Autolease in Tyre Safety

Michelin recently held a three-day event in association with ATS Euromaster at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) for one of its largest fleet customers, Lloyds TSB Autolease (now LEX Autolease). The objective, says the tyre-maker, was to raise awareness of the importance of tyres and tyre pressures in terms of safety and environmental impact. Each day, 25 of Lloyds TSB Autolease’s customers visited the test facility in Warwickshire to take part in interactive workshops covering subjects including tyre wear and damage, tyre construction and the steps Michelin is taking to reduce the environmental impact of its tyres throughout their life (from rubber plantation to disposal).

Chris Mullins Tyres Supports ‘Lifesaver in Your Pocket’ Campaign

Gloucester tyre retailer Chris Mullins Tyres has thrown its weight behind TyreSafe’s ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ tread depth awareness campaign this October. “Anything that helps drivers become more conscious of their tyres has to be a good thing and this campaign is ideally timed to get that message across in the run-up to winter“ said Chris Mullins, who runs a busy independent business on Gloucester’s Bristol Road. “We’ve used the TyreSafe posters and leaflets in the centre and they’ve definitely created a talking point with customers,” he added.

TyreSafe Points Out Irresponsible Regions

New research conducted by safety organisation TyreSafe shows that drivers in East Anglia and the North West are among the most likely to be involved in a tyre related car accident. Nearly one in four drivers in these regions have never checked the depth of their tyre tread. TyreSafe's research was conducted in August 2009 among 1552 motorists across the UK and found drivers in Wales were found to be the most responsible. Here, 40 per cent claimed to have checked their tyre tread depth within the last month, the maximum period recommended between checks. This was closely followed by drivers in Scotland where nearly four in ten drivers performed checks.

Quentin Willson Promotes TyreSafe ‘Lifesaver in Your Pocket’ Campaign

As part of October’s tyre safety month, Quentin Willson is the face of a new online video demonstrating TyreSafe’s ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ initiative which encourages drivers to check their tyre tread depth to see if they are safe and legal with the use of a 20p coin. The video compares the breaking distance of tyres at 1mm and 2mm and shows a difference of 17 metres between the two.

“As we approach some of the wettest months of the year, it’s essential that drivers have sufficient tread depth to keep them safe and legal,” explains Willson. “Without it, they could find themselves in a life threatening accident, lose their licence and face a heavy fine. The simplicity of the 20p test means that there is absolutely no excuse why anyone should be found driving on tyres which have illegal tread depth.”

SEAT On Board For Tyre Safety Month

SEAT is backing October's National Tyre Safety Month with free tyre safety checks at participating dealers nationwide. The Spanish brand is backing the month-long push to improve road safety being run by TyreSafe, which is highlighting the risks posed by driving on tyres which have insufficient tread depth, making them both illegal and dangerous. SEAT is supporting the safety campaign by offering free tyre tread depth and pressure checks on all makes and models. SEAT's vehicle technicians will also offer free 32-point full vehicle health checks for those drivers who want to ensure their car is fit for the potentially gruelling winter ahead.

Tyre Safety Month Gets Underway

TyreSafe hopes lives will be saved and avoided in as it launches October's Tyre Safety Month. Throughout the month hundreds of garages across the country will be encouraging motorists to check the depth of their tyre tread by using a 20p coin, to ensure they stay safe and legal. "As we move into the wettest months of the year, adequate tyre tread depth is a critical element of road safety," explains Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. "There are still far too many accidents and fatalities occurring every day which could have been avoided if the driver had paid more attention to the condition of their tyres. The 'lifesaver in your pocket' campaign gives drivers an incredibly easy and simple way to check their tread depth which will help them stay safe and on the right side of the law."

During 2008, 34 motorists died on the UK's roads where an illegal, defective or under-inflated tyre was a contributory factor in the accident. At least 900 other motorists were also injured in accidents where tyre neglect played a part. Independent research commissioned by TyreSafe found that more than half of all drivers could not correctly identify the legal tread depth and a startling one in five drivers had never checked their tread depth. The AA reported that in 2008 nearly one in ten of every breakdown it attends, is for a tyre related call out.

Goodyear’s EfficientGrip Fitted on UK Police Fleets

The police are always the first port of call for those in need of help securing personal safety, but they can only come to the aid of the needy if they themselves have taken the proper precautions. One of the prerequisites for road safety is a tyre up to the job of keeping the car where it should be – even when higher demands than your average drive are made of it. That is why Goodyear, in the run up to October’s tyre safety month, is talking about the fitment of its new tyre, the EfficientGrip to Bedfordshire police, Hertfordshire police and Thames Valley’s police fleet vehicles.

National Offer Free Checks to Support Tyre Safety Month

National Tyres and Autocare have announced plans to support this year’s Tyre Safety Month by offering customers free tread, pressure and general condition checks for their tyres. According to the company, National are supporting this year’s TyreSafe-initiated campaign to highlight the importance of well maintained tyres, particularly, tyre tread, with customer leaflets and posters in branch. National are also using direct communications with customers including emailers and vouchers urging them to check their tread and if in doubt to drop into branches for a free check.

Tony Neill, Chief Executive Officer, commented: “As a founding member of TyreSafe, National is highly committed to tyre safety and by offering these free checks, our customers can be confident that their tyres are performing correctly, especially during the autumn and winter months ahead.”

"Check Your Tyres, Save [Fuel] Money" – TyreSafe

Hauliers, fleet operators and private motorists are being reminded that not only can they stay safe on the road but they can also reduce the impact of the recent fuel duty rise by keeping their tyres correctly inflated. According to research carried out by a major tyre manufacturer and member of TyreSafe, driving on tyres which are just ten psi under the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure can increase fuel consumption by 2.5 per cent. By keeping tyres at their correct pressures, motorists can travel further on each tank of fuel, reduce their CO2 emissions and stay safer.

20p Coin a ‘Life Saver in Your Pocket’: TyreSafe

The latest TyreSafe campaign materials are soon to be released on the not-for-profit organisation’s website in time for October’s Tyre Safety Month. Focusing on tread depth, the new resources will encourage drivers to check and replace any illegal tyres on their vehicle by introducing the theme of a ‘life saver in your pocket', which suggests that motorists can check the safety and legality of their tyres using the edge of a 20 pence coin. Materials are provided free of charge to the trade and include a reception poster, a point of sale leaflet, a website banner and a safety advice movie.

TyreSafe and RoadSafe Partner

TyreSafe and RoadSafe have formalised a reciprocal agreement. The collaboration will see the organisations working more closely together, taking an active part in each other’s development and initiatives to reduce the number of casualties and accidents on the UK’s roads. TyreSafe has become a full member of RoadSafe meaning it will take a seat on its advisory panel, while RoadSafe has joined TyreSafe as an associate member.

TyreSafe Appoints Red Marlin Communications

TyreSafe has appointed Red Marlin Communications to handle its national PR. The appointment takes effect immediately and will see the company “working to raise awareness of tyre-related safety issues across a wide range of consumer, trade and business audiences.” As well as developing a stream of regular news and educational stories, the agency is aiming to help TyreSafe engage with relevant stakeholder groups to widen the distribution of its tyre safety messages.
