Ireland extending EPR waste tyre scheme

The Republic of Ireland’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for tyres is to be extended to cover all tyre categories set out in country’s Tyres Regulations (8th regulation). According to Ossian Smyth, Minister of State with responsibility for Communications and Circular Economy, this extension will take effect on 1 January 2025 and enable the environmentally sound management of bus, truck, agricultural, construction and industrial waste tyres. Currently, the EPR scheme manages and seeks sustainable solutions for end-of-life passenger car, 4×4, van and motorcycle tyres.

Siemens MoU to aid Enviro’s European expansion plan

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) and Siemens have signed a Memorandum of Understanding regarding a collaboration to support the European expansion plan that Enviro announced together with Antin Infrastructure Partners earlier this year. Through the collaboration, Siemens’ “extensive experience in automation and digitalisation” will help boost the efficiency of Enviro’s production.

Belgium’s Risorce secures €12.5 million for ELT pyrolysis plant

Risorce, a Belgian company active in the transportation and trading of end-of-life tyres, has closed a 12.5 million euro round of financing to fund a new end-of-life tyre recycling plant in Liège Province. This facility will utilise the pyrolysis process and have the capacity to process 2.4 million tyres a year, around half the waste car tyres collected in Belgium.

UK’s largest tyre recycling gathering discusses exports to India, T8 exemptions and regulatory reform

Companies from across the UK gathered in Leamington Spa for the TRA’s annual briefing day and conference on Wednesday 13 September. Over 50 businesses sent representatives to hear from the leading industry experts and analysts at a time that British tyre recycling stands “at a critical crossroads”. Pyrum Innovations to build JV tyre recycling plant in Greece

German pyrolysis technology specialist Pyrum Innovations AG and Greek firm Thermo Lysi SA have begun preliminary discussions about a new end-of-life tyre recycling plant in Greece. Pyrum has agreed to carry out all the planning necessary to obtain the building permits required under Greek law for the new facility, which will be located around 85 miles north of Athens.

Siemens joins Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance

Plant engineer and equipment manufacturer Zeppelin Systems launched the Zeppelin Sustainable Tire Alliance in March 2023 to pursue a goal of increasing sustainability within the tyre industry by rethinking production and recycling within the context of a circular economy. The Alliance brings together firms from around the world in order to put this vision into practice at various points in the tyre value chain. The latest to join is Siemens AG.

Enviro adds to key expansion team

With the hiring of two new team members, Scandinavian Enviro Systems speaks of completing the “key recruitments central to its future expansion.” The company also shares that extensive preparatory work has delayed the start of construction at its joint venture tyre recycling plant in Uddevalla, Sweden.

Michelin remains top Enviro shareholder after issue

With the assistance of Monitor via Modular Finance, Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has prepared a register of the company’s 15 largest owners as of 30 June 2023. Following the announcement of a cooperation agreement with Antin in March and a directed share issue in May, new Enviro shareholders include Handelsbanken Fonder, Swedbank Robur Fonder and Skandia Fonder. Michelin did not participate in the issue, but although it no longer has a 20 per cent stake in Enviro, it remains the largest shareholder by a considerable margin with 16.28 per cent.

ISCC PLUS certification for Kal Tire recycling plant

Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group reports that its mining tyre recycling plant in Chile has gained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification, verifying it meets the circular materials standards for reclaimed oil, carbon black and syngas using a mass balance chain of custody approach. It thus becomes one of just a handful of mining tyre recycling facilities in the world to generate outputs that are 100 per cent ISCC PLUS compliant.

The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) ‘Briefing Day’ is back following the pandemic-related hiatus. The 2023 event will be held on Wednesday 13 September 2023 at the Woodland Grange Hotel, Leamington Spa. Pyrum, SUEZ building UK tyre pyrolysis plant

Pyrum Innovations is bringing its pyrolysis-based tyre recycling technology to the UK in partnership with SUEZ recycling and recovery UK Ltd. The two companies have entered into a one-year exclusivity agreement for a facility with three pyrolysis reactors that can process approximately 20,000 tonnes of end-of-life tyres annually. During the year SUEZ will determine the plant’s location and, with support from Pyrum, begin and finance the approval process.

Enviro share issue funding JV, operations

Scandinavian Enviro Systems has raised SEK 300 million (£23.4 million) via a directed share issue and intends to use 75% of this to acquire shares in the previously announced, Michelin-supported joint venture with Antin Infrastructure Partners and to finance the JV’s first plant. The remaining 25% will finance Enviro’s operations for at least 24 months.

Earnings hit, but Genan responds to energy crisis with greater efficiency

Despite its turnover increasing 4.6 per cent to more than 62 million euros in 2022 – a new record for the company – tyre recycler Genan reports that decreasing steel prices and significantly higher energy and freight costs more than halved its year-on-year earnings to less than 1.5 million euros. In response, the company is now speeding up its ongoing work to invest in renewable energy sources.

ELTs: Pyrum both upstream & downstream of Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz will soon use waste tyres removed from its vehicles in the production of new cars. German pyrolysis recycling specialist Pyrum Innovations has taken the “next step” in its cooperation with the vehicle manufacturer and anticipates recycling several hundred tonnes of used tyres from the Mercedes-Benz Used Parts Centre every year. Pyrolysis oil made from these tyres will be used in the manufacture of vehicle components.
