Japanese general trading company Marubeni Corporation has announced its investment in Thailand-based waste tyre pyrolysis recycler Green Rubber Energy Company Limited (GRE). By investing in this venture, Marubeni intends to establish a tyre recycling supply chain in Thailand that encompasses the collection of end-of-life tyres and the production and sale of recycled materials such as recovered carbon black and tyre pyrolysis oil. Marubeni has not disclosed the size of its investment in GRE.

LD Carbon has closed a $28 million Series C funding round led by Toyota’s growth fund, Woven Capital, with participation by Meritz Securities, Investwith, Industrial Bank of Korea, Hyundai Motor Group ZER01NE, Elohim Partners and New Main Capital. LD Carbon will use the investment to scale operations to recycle end-of-life tyres and material from end-of-life vehicles into recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil through pyrolysis and material recovery technology. From here, the aim is to use the recovered materials to create new automotive parts and tyres. According to the company, “the investment will advance LD Carbon’s mission of accelerating the circular economy while delivering material cost and carbon savings to global customers”.

Circtec, a specialist in pyrolysis technology for sustainable end-of-life tyre recycling, has secured €150 million in a recent financing round. Novo Holdings and A.P. Moller Holding spearheaded this initiative with a €75 million equity investment. The financing also includes €22.5 million in grants awarded by the Government of the Netherlands.

Within the framework of an eight-year offtake agreement, UK-based tyre pyrolysis specialist Circtec will annually supply energy company bp with up to 75,000 tonnes of fuel and feedstock recovered from end-of-life tyres. Circtec will process these tyres at a plant it will set up in The Netherlands. In support of this offtake agreement, bp is providing Circtec a €12.5 million debt finance facility to contribute to the capex for expanding this plant into a commercial-scale operation.

North East Lincolnshire Council has approved plans for a pyrolysis plant for processing end-of-life tyres in Grimsby. The facility proposed by Fluid Ice FO Ltd has the capacity to process nearly 25,000 tonnes of waste tyres annually. Fluid Ice claims that the plant will use a pyrolysis process “based on the plant” operated by ReOil in Jazworno, Poland, which produces saleable fuel oil, carbon black and steel as well as pyrolysis gas.

Pyrum Innovations views the commissioning of reactor 2 (TAD 2) at its main Dillingen/Saar site in Germany as a “new milestone,” and test runs of TAD 2 have resulted in the production of around 60,000 litres of pyrolysis oil, with the first delivery of 24,000 litres earmarked for BASF. Pyrum Innovations confirms it will begin construction of its second wholly owned end-of-life tyre recycling facility in the second half of this year. At a meeting on 6 February, the local council of Perl in Germany’s Saarland region overwhelmingly approved the project. Uddevalla Municipality in Sweden has authorised Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) to proceed with the construction of its new joint venture end-of-life tyre recycling plant. This clearance comes after Enviro, Antin Infrastructure Partners, and Michelin reached a final decision on the project’s investment on 7 February. Having secured all essential environmental and construction approvals, Enviro anticipates commencing construction in the first quarter of 2024.

In 2020, chemical company BASF invested 16 million euros in Pyrum Innovations as part of its ChemCycling project and since then has purchased Pyrum pyrolysis oil, feed this into its production network for the manufacture of Ccycled products. BASF looks forward to significantly increasing the quantities of pyrolysis oil it uses when Pyrum brings planned new facilities online – and is now supporting this plant rollout through the signing of a cooperation agreement, under which it will initially provide Pyrum with 25 million euros of financing.
Recycling company Remondis Group recently signed a letter of intent with Pyrum Innovations. The partners intend to set up a plant for reclaiming raw materials from end-of-life tyres on a site in Bremen, Germany that’s owned by Weserport, a subsidiary of Remondis sister company Rhenus. This plant will be capable of recycling 20,000 tonnes of tyres annually.
