Beru Develops Bus TPMS for Harsh Winters

Automotive engineering specialist Beru f1systems has developed a specific bus tyre pressure monitoring system for Canadian firm Nova Bus and their new Nova LFS Artic bus. The long established TPMS manufacturer has designed a system that solves key durability and performance issues for bus operators in harsh environments.

“Implementing a TPMS on a 62 foot (18.9 metre) articulated bus presents a number of unique design challenges,” says senior application engineer, James Shingleton. “Achieving good radio frequency (RF) coverage along the full length of the bus requires robust technology and clever component packaging.” In this particular instance the harsh operating conditions of the vehicle was another major consideration, as components must be protected from the elements.

Kocchi’s Technologies, Releases Wireless Wireless Truck TPMS

Kocchi’s Technologies, Inc. has released a generation of TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) products geared toward Commercial Trucks, Utility Vehicles, RVs and Trailers. According to the company, Kocchi’s new TPMS product is one of the most advanced commercial TPMS available today. The system is said to feature high level stability and accurate measuring, giving information about tyres’ high/low pressure, air leakage; or temperature. The tyre air pressure sensor (cap) screws onto the valve stem replacing the dust cap. The monitor can easily be mounted on the dashboard, or in any convenient location, by using the provided velcro pads.

TPMS Update

With America’s tyre manufacturers and retailers still unhappy with the National Highway Transport and Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) rule-making on TPMS, signs are that Europe too will soon require its new vehicles to be equipped with tyre pressure monitoring systems. To be fair to America’s tyre people, they have not resisted TPMS. Quite the contrary, the argument is over the fact that the mandatory system proposed by the NHTSA would permit up to a 25 per cent air loss before the TPMS warning light would come on. The tyre industry to its credit has argued for a tighter standard than this.

Siemens VDO Brings Piezo TPMS Technology to IAA

While many attended the IAA in Frankfurt to admire the crisp styling of the latest vehicle models and concept cars, for others the technology lying beneath the skin of a car is every bit as beautiful. To satisfy the cravings of these technophiles, a number of companies chose the motor show as a venue for showing off tomorrow’s standard features.

Amongst these was Siemens VDO, who brought its next generation, battery free piezo element tyre pressure monitoring system to Frankfurt. Integrating the sensor, communications system, identification electronics and processing in a single module located directly in the tyre, the Intelligent Tire System (ITS) automatically detects tyre data and transfers the data to the system controls. When necessary, the driver receives critical tyre information, such as the tyre pressure and the vehicle’s load status. To support the optimised functioning of these systems, important tyre status information also can be transmitted to other electronic vehicle systems, such as the braking assistant, stability control, or the drive control system.

Michelin Tests Reveal Lax Tyre Care Habits

Two days of inspections conducted by Michelin in the Oxfordshire town of Banbury has highlighted the necessity for motorists to regularly check their vehicle’s tyres. More than half of the cars looked at by the Michelin team had at least one dangerously under-inflated tyre.

According to local newspaper the Banbury Guardian, 80.11 per cent of the 181 vehicles had under-inflated tyres, while the percentage of vehicles with tyres considered dangerously under-inflated was 54.70 per cent. Eight of the cars checked even had punctured tyres.

Michelin states that running on tyres inflated to 15psi below the recommended level lowers the speed at which a car will aquaplane on a wet surface by 10mph. Potential weaknesses in the tyre’s wall can also develop through the excessive build up of heat that results from under-inflation. And if this is not reason enough to check those tyres, the tyremaker adds that Over 70,000 miles, having the correct tyre pressure could save replacing two tyres.

Beru Chairman of Board Resigns

A press release made public by tyre pressure monitoring system manufacturer Beru AG on June 26 reports that Marco von Maltzan and the company’s supervisory board have mutually agreed to end Mr. von Maltzan’s activity as member and chairman of Beru’s executive board as of that day. The release added that the supervisory board “thanks Mr. von Maltzan for his efforts and his successful activity for the company over a period of more than four years.”

VTI Measures Aircraft Tyre Pressure

Finnish firm, VTI Technologies Oy, will supply bare die pressure sensors for use in Crane Aerospace & Electronics’ SmartStem(TM) tyre pressure monitoring system. The capacitive pressure sensors are built into the tyre’s inflation stem and the technology is passive, obtaining its operating power from an external reader or interrogator. The advantage being that there are no batteries, power sources, or wires.

“The demand for tire pressure measurement applications is growing. VTI can offer pressure measurement solutions that are based on capacitive measurement principle providing a very low power solution with parallel resistance higher than 10 GOhm. These features are highly appreciated by the aircraft industry. VTI’s pressure platform not only offers good temperature stability but also provides extremely high resolution, particularly for those applications where minor pressure changes need to be measured,” says Rick Russell, Director of Sales and Marketing, VTI Technologies.

Power to the PCL

Energy supplier Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has teamed up with PCL to provide its staff with a vital gift to keep them safe on the roads. As the latest project in its on-going Health and Safety initiative, SSE decided to target tyre maintenance which, if neglected, can cause serious, even fatal, accidents.

PCL was asked to supply 17,500 pencil-style tyre pressure gauges along with tyre trade depth gauges, which SSE gave to employees in a company wallet enclosing a safety information/advice card. The response was so great that a further 2,000 of each gauge were supplied to cover the extra unexpected demand.

Tyres Under Inflated and Insufficiently Checked – Study

Yet another reminder of the importance of frequently checking tyre pressure has come from the results of a survey conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists’ Trust. The survey of approximately 500 drivers showed that on average only 18 per cent of men and 4 per cent of women are checking vehicle tyre pressure once a week, the recommended frequency. And only a minority of motorists – 37 per cent of men and 32 per cent of women – conduct monthly pressure checks.

Air pressure facilities at garages were found to be largely accurate, with 80 per cent accurate to within 5 psi at 30 psi, and almost all the others accurate to within 7 psi. However the majority of motorists appear to be unaware that the recommended inflation pressures given by car manufacturers and at garage facilities are for “cold” levels, when even a short drive from home to the garage can cause tyres to become heated. The result of inflating heated tyres to cold levels is that they can end up being between 12 and 15 per cent under inflated.

New Commercial TPMS from Mobile Awareness

Transportation safety products company, Mobile Awareness, released a new generation of TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) products geared toward Commercial Trucks, Utility Vehicles, RVs and Trailers – the MA-TPMS. The system automatically and continuously monitors tyre status, alerting the driver to abnormal conditions with an audible alert and LCD display indicator. It not only warns of low-pressure and high-pressure levels, but also monitors hazardous tyre temperature conditions. All three warning settings are programmable by the user.

“There are many advantages to monitoring and maintaining properly inflated tyres, the most important being the reduction of fatalities and injuries from tyre related hazards,” remarked Gary Rothstein, president of Mobile Awareness. “As we expand our offering of transportation safety products, tire monitoring will be a key part of our focus to prevent vehicle accidents.”

Annual Figures Show Beru TPMS to be Company Drawcard

Automotive ignition and electronics specialist Beru AG has reported that its Group revenues increased by 7.1 per cent to 439 million euros during the year to December 31, 2006. The company’s newest division, Electronics and Sensor Technology – under which the Beru Tire Safety System (TSS) is produced – posted substantial revenue growth during the year, with Group EBT totalling 53.5 million euros in 2006, as apposed to 32 million a year earlier. Net profit after minority interest increased to 43 million euros, compared with 19.5 million in the nine-month period of short financial year 2005 (April 1 – December 31, 2005). Earnings per share amounted to 4.30 euros.

The division achieved BERU’s strongest growth rate of 31.6 per cent with sales revenues of 135.8 million euros. This was primarily a result of revenues from sales of tyre pressure monitoring systems, which more than doubled from 21.9 million euros to 46.5 million euros.
