Two thirds of drivers unaware of tyre labelling

New research from Milton Keynes-based Just Tyres reveals drivers’ awareness of 2012’s EU tyre label legislation is low. More than two thirds (67 per cent) of drivers are unaware of EU legislation and only just under a sixth of drivers (15.5 per cent) even knew that the legislation existed.

Back in 2012, the tyre industry experienced a major shake up when EU tyre labelling for all UK tyre manufacturers, distributors and retailers was introduced. From then on, every tyre needed to be tested and measured for three specific ratings; fuel efficiency, wet grip and noise levels.

Pirelli launches new generation Cinturato P7 Blue

Pirelli’s Cinturato P7 Blue range has been extended to include ‘AA’ European tyre label ratings on all new sizes. When originally launched in 2012, the Cinturato P7 Blue was the first tyre in the world to claim a maximum score on the European tyre label for energy efficiency and safety (in certain sizes).

The latest Cinturato P7 Blue extends this standard to the new sizes added to the range, meaning it now boasts a maximum European tyre label score on nearly all the sizes in the entire range.

From doodling to tyre testing – the GIC*L

Some artists specialise in the human form, others find inspiration in landscapes and nature. And then there’s the guy who sketches tyres for a job. He’s part of a four-person team responsible for design at the Goodyear Innovation Center Luxembourg (GIC*L), and upon visiting at the end of June we were surprised to discover that the global top-ten manufacturer’s tyre design process begins with a very low-tech pencil and paper drawing.

UAE to implement tyre chip technology by end of 2017

Having announced that tyres sold on the internal market would be chipped and labelled with a QR code back in 2014, the United Arab Emirates’ authorities have announced plans to roll out tyre chipping by the end of 2017.

The Brexit effect: certain uncertainty

Markets hate uncertainty. So it was no surprise that the pound fell to its lowest point in 30 years and the FTSE (as well as other European stock markets) took something of a beating in the immediate aftermath of the UK’s 23 June referendum decision to leave the European Union. But these were just the initial reactions. As we went to press (a few days after the Brexit vote), the FTSE has recovered, but not to pre-Brexit levels, while the pound remains at a 30-year low. A rally of this kind could be a sign of a return to stability. It could point to a new, upward trajectory. It could be the calm before the storm. But who knows? Now the British public has spoken, the question is: what does Brexit mean for tyres?

Iveco chooses Michelin OE tyres for Stralis XP truck

The New Iveco Stralis XP heavy truck will fit the next generation of Michelin X LINE Energy tyres as original equipment. The new X LINE Energy range is the first tyre range to receive an A grade rolling resistance ratings in the drive, steer and trailer positions, according to the European Tyre Label measure. As a result, Iveco customers can opt for the market’s first heavy truck tyre range to earn an “A” rating for rolling resistance on every axle.

Enjoy: Rotalla tyres carry CB and CC label ratings

Contract manufacturer Enjoy Tyre, specialises in importing Rotalla and Routeway branded tyres into the UK and Europe. For its part, Rotalla is represented by 15 exclusive distributors responsible for 20 markets throughout Europe. The latest news is that the recently introduced Rotalla Setula E-Pace RH01 and RU01 patterns, which carry improved EU label ratings of CB and CC respectively, are now available. RH01 has 36 sizes with H/V options and diameters from 14 up to 16 inches.

Nankang to give A-rated AS-2+ its Reifen debut

Taiwanese tyre manufacturer, Nankang Rubber Tire is to give its Sportnex AS-2+, which has achieved an A for wet braking performance on the European tyre label, its Reifen Show debut in Essen between 24 and 27 May 2016.

According to the company, the AS-2+ came out in September 2015, replacing its predecessor (the AS-2) and is available in 29 sizes.

NMRO, Regulatory Delivery and the changing face of tyre labelling enforcement in the UK

Believe it or not, the history of the body responsible for enforcing tyre labelling legislation in the UK goes back to the Magna Carta. Nowadays, they are known as National Measurement and Regulation Office or NMRO and form part of the government Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS)’s “Regulatory Delivery” organisation. However, there is quite a lot more to it than that.

EU tyre label under scrutiny – authorities begin 24-month project

One of the chief criticisms of the European tyre label since its introduction in November 2012 is the absence of effective third-party control; abuse is inevitable in a system that allows tyre manufacturers to evaluate their own products. The Market Surveillance Action on Tyres 2015 (MSTYR15), a project funded by the European Commission’s Horizon2020 programme and coordinated by the Product Safety Forum of Europe (PROSAFE), aims to bring accountability into tyre labelling.

Giti: Dekra independent results contradict magazine tyre test

In response to a recent, less than favourable third party tyre test, Giti Tire has run two sets of independent tests with Dekra and “a leading German tyre testing association” to verify the wet braking performance of its GT Radial Champiro FE1 tyre. In the case of the original test, the Nexen Nblue HD Plus was chosen as the comparison product based on the reported results, which had this tyre as the test winner. Therefore Giti ran its tests using the same Nexen product as a comparison.

NMRO and BRDO merge into single regulator

The UK Better Regulation Delivery Office (BRDO) and National Measurement and Regulation Office (NMRO) are merging into a single Department of Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) directorate from 1 April 2016. The goal of the new entity, which will be known as “Regulatory Delivery”, will be to focus on regulation and enforcement. This in turn is likely to impact the way legislation such European Tyre Labelling is monitored and enforced.

Top tyre manufacturers deny involvement in tyre test manipulation

Along with Nokian’s admission and apology for “mistakes” in its practices concerning tyre tests, the Finnish tyre manufacturer stated that “several operators in the field… have been suspected or evidence has been presented against them of differences between tyres in magazine tests and tyres that are for sale in stores.” After the Nokian statement’s implication of other tyre manufacturers in malpractice regarding independent tyre testing, Michelin immediately responded by stating categorically that it has “never designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations.” Tyres & Accessories approached 11 more of the world’s leading manufacturers, many of whose products regularly appear in magazine tests, for their response to the question: Have you ever designed or manufactured tyres specifically for tests conducted by the media, automobile associations or any other organisations?
