Micheldever instigates removed tyre drilling policy

Micheldever Tyre Services has formalised a policy of drilling removed tyres with a view to preventing used tyres entering illegal or dangerous secondary markets. According to Mark Harley, retail operations director, at Micheldever Tyre Services: “Tyres removed from vehicles are usually taken off for a reason…they may have hidden damage which is only likely to be revealed when the car is driven down the road. The reality is that they pose a real road safety danger, are not fit for purpose and in fact offer very poor value for money”. According to a recent Auto Express survey, arranged in conjunction with TyreSafe, the cost per millimetre of part worn versus new tyres was almost double.

Goodyear appoints JB Tyres Irish farm and industrial tyre dealer

Goodyear has appointed JB Tyres of Tobermore to the position of exclusive farm and industrial tyre dealer for Ireland. The agreement means that JB Tyres has become one of the largest Goodyear farm tyre dealers in Europe. The manufacturer said the distributor is topping European league tables for sales in 2012.

Groupe Massa becomes Infinity Tyres’ French distributor

Infinity Tyres has signed a distribution deal with Groupe Massa in France. The group operates through several subsidiary companies focusing on retail, logistics, retreading and wholesale, and the brand will be distributed through the Massa Pneus retail network and the business-to-business Imagine Car operation, which it says is the largest wholesaler on the French market.

Point S moves into South Africa

Retail franchise operation point S has confirmed an agreement with Unity Tyre Trading, a group of 11 independent tyre dealers in South Africa. The company announced that it was pursuing international development opportunities outside Europe at Las Vegas’ SEMA show in November, and its launch in the new African territory has confirmed point S’s ambitions in this direction. Point S also strengthened its Central European operations, by signing an agreement with the Slovenian firm, Span.

Bridgestone expands ranges/introduces elite programme at INTERMAT 2012

Bridgestone Europe presented a strong line-up of off-the-road tyres at INTERMAT 2012, according to the company. The international fair for construction industries, which took place in Paris from 16 – 21 April saw the Japanese manufacturer display the world’s largest tyre and some of its leading OTR industrial radial tyres.

Products on show included: The VJT (V-Steel J-Traction); VRF (V-Steel Rock Fast); VLTS (V-Steel L-Traction S); VSW (V-Steel Snow Wedge); VCHR (V-Steel Container Handler Rib) and VSDT (V-Steel Super Deep Traction).

Double Coin launches mobile website

Double Coin and the China Manufacturers Alliance have launched a new mobile website aimed at North American customers. The site will complement the existing www.doublecoin-us.com and is designed and formatted for optimal viewing on any web-enabled Smartphone, including iPhone, Android, Blackberry and others. Features accessible through the mobile site include product specifications and warranty information, and visitors can use the dealer locator function to access over 1,000 independent Double Coin tyre dealers across North America. The phone’s GPS automatically redirects to the closest dealer based on the user’s current location.

Michelin urges fleets to rate tyre dealer experiences

Information from ‘the coalface’ is being sought for a new Michelin website. As part of a stated drive to improve consumer power, the tyre maker is asking fleet managers to encourage their employees to share experiences they’ve had with tyre dealers; fleet vehicle drivers can post details of service and price on Michelin’s Tyre Dealer Review website and rate their overall experience out of five stars. By doing so, Michelin believes drivers can help others make an informed decision about the tyre fitting service they use.

ATS-E highlights October-March cold weather commuting

Tyre dealers have often emphasised the improvement in performance at sub-seven degrees Celsius that cold weather tyres offer, but the relatively mild weather of the 2011/12 winter may have diminished the upward momentum of consumer interest in the product. However, ATS Euromaster argues that an analysis of UK temperatures during peak driving hours in even the last winter shows that fitting cold weather products would have been worthwhile. Temperatures dropped below seven degrees Celsius during prime commuting hours on 147 separate days between 1 October 2011 and 31 March 2012. The statistics, provided by the Met Office, cover temperatures in 10 major UK cities from 7:00 till 9:00 and 16:00 till 18:00.

TPMS opportunities on show at Brityrex 2012

Tyre retailers will soon have a major new profit opportunity as legislation covering the fitment and testing of TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring Systems) comes into force later this year. And suppliers including Apaseal/Tyresure, Autogem and Rema Tip Top will be exhibiting at Brityrex International to demonstrate the technical aspects of the systems and the commercial potential available.

GT Radial UK dealers experience WinterPro tyre in Arctic conditions

16 tyre dealers from GT Radial’s UK Performance Centres and distributor, Micheldever have braved Arctic conditions to complete winter tyre testing workshops at the company’s Mellatracks Proving Ground in Ivalo, Finland. The tyre professionals travelled to Test World, based several hundred kilometres inside the Arctic Circle in the northernmost area of Finnish Lapland, in order to complete four separate tyre tests in temperatures as low as -15°C. Eco-Twin – Heuver launches approved Aeolus retreads

Netherlands-based wholesaler Heuver Banden is introducing a ‘second life’ for Aeolus tyres in the markets where it represents the Chinese tyre maker. The company has released its first retreaded Aeolus tyre, the mould cure retreaded Eco-Twin trailer tyre in size 385/65R22.5. Heuver says the use of high quality Aeolus casings ensures excellent performance for the tyre’s second life, along with reduced operating costs.

Michelin launches Certified Centre Ag tyre dealer programme

Accredited Michelin Exelagri dealers in the UK and Ireland will now be able to secure prestigious Michelin Certified Centre (MCC) status, as the manufacturer launches a new dealer programme for agricultural tyres. Michelin is introducing the new certification scheme across Europe to recognise exceptionally high standards of customer service and expertise; to gain MCC recognition dealers must pass a 48-point independent quality audit that examines every aspect of their business, including workshop cleanliness, the standard of equipment, staff training and customer advice quality. The scheme also includes car and truck tyre dealers and will include earthmover tyre specialists towards the end of 2012.

Avon 3D Ultra – three road/track options for sportsbike riders

In mid-March, Avon Tyres officially launched its latest high performance motorcycle tyre range – the 3D Ultra. Tyre dealers and members of the press got their hands on the new tyres for the first time during a launch event at the Almeria circuit in Spain, and Avon says the tyres “exceeded expectations” despite the difficult weather conditions experienced. All three versions of the 3D Ultra were put through their paces, and riders attending the launch commented favourably on the new Avon rubber.
