Conti Appoints Three to UK Truck Division Sales Team

Continental has added three new staff members to its UK truck division sales team. These new positions, says Conti, have been created to support the division’s growth with dealers and truck operators at both national and regional level.

Zoe Worley joins the company as key account manager, National Fleets. Her previous experience includes account management positions with Lloyds TSB Autolease and Reality Group. Ms Worley will be responsible for developing the Continental brand within key national fleets as well as integrating them with ContiNetwork, Continental’s independent retail network.

Treadsetters Aiming to Increase Durun Sales 400%

Telford-based wholesaler, Treadsetters is aiming to increase sales of its Chinese produced Durun brand this year by more than four times the 2007 figure. Last year Treadsetters, which holds the European distribution rights, sold roughly 120,000 tyres. This year the company is aiming to increase this to half a million. So far sales have largely been generated in the UK, but customers have also purchased through Treadsetters from as far afield as Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, France and some African countries.

Holiday Competition for Viking and Barum Dealers

Viking International is offering Viking and Barum brand tyre dealers the chance to win a holiday in exciting destinations such as Rome, Nice or Amsterdam. Two dealers for each brand can win £500 worth of holiday vouchers towards a short break to a destination of their choice as a reward for increased tyre sales. Dealers have been automatically entered into the promotions which are currently running from 2nd June until 25th July.

Marangoni Licensed to Produce ContiTread Retreading Materials

Marangoni Group and Continental AG have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that will see Continental transfer the production and marketing of ContiTread pre-cure treads. “Marangoni and Continental have been working for years in various fields together successfully. This cooperation is another important and complementary facet,” said Eckhard Wilanek, Continental’s Managing Director of Fleet & Retread Business. No details of the financial side of the arrangement have been released, but both companies hope to benefit from faster growth in the global marketplace – Maragoni in the retreading segment and Continental in the new tyre business.

Zeus Releases New Tri-Lingual Tyre Fill Brochure

Tyre fill producer Zeus has just published an informative range of brochures, initially in English, German and French, which feature an introduction to the fundamental technologies employed in the products, use, application and costs associated with today’s more advanced, tyre puncture proofing systems.

According to the company, the brochure represents a general drive within the company to better inform OEMs, tyre distributors and users; and provide them with direct access to tyre puncture proofing systems technologies, processes, products, applications, support services, education and training. Following the recent freshening up of its corporate image and global brand repositioning, Zeus-fill has now embarked on a global market and communications programme.

Devalued Rupee Leads to Opposing Opinions on Tyre Dumping Duty

Depreciation of India’s Rupee against the US dollar is leading to stronger voices being raised for and against the country’s dumping duty on imported tyres. At present the duty is applied to bias tyres, and the All India tyre Dealers’ Federation (AITDF) is calling for its abolition in face of prices that effectively have increased 10 per cent in the last two to three months.

“Over the last eight to ten weeks, the rupee has depreciated by 10 per cent vis-à-vis dollar,” commented AITDF head SP Singh. “This has resulted in an increase of Rs 2,100 in the prices of a pair of radial truck and bus tyres. Moreover, the existing anti-dumping duty on bias tyres has already hit imports. So, we want the import duty to be abolished to compensate for the impact of rupee depreciation on the import of latest technology radial tyres.”

A Little Bit Different: Vogue Follows Its Own Path in Industry

Goodyear HydraGrip Wins Auto Express Product Honours

Auto Express Magazine’s annual Product Honours Awards report has recognised the Goodyear HydraGrip as the ‘Best Buy’ tyre in the family car tyre market. The Product Honours Award follows testing by Auto Express, Britain’s biggest selling motoring weekly magazine, of 16 tyre brands. The test compared stopping distances, handling, grip, fuel consumption, in car-noise levels and prices to determine the champion in the highly competitive family car tyre market.

The magazine found the Goodyear tyre excelled in the wet, particularly in the curved aquaplaning test, but was strong across the board. In terms of curved aquaplaning, the Goodyear HydraGrip had 15 per cent more grip than any other tyre tested, and 49 per cent more grip than one other brand.

Dekk Partner – Continued Growth

Dekk Partner claims to be the largest group of tyre dealers in Norway, Sweden and Finland, with an anticipated turnover this year in excess of 320 million euros. The group is still expanding and the latest deal is that the Dekk 1 group, in the western part of Norway, has joined Dekk Partner from 1st February.

After six years in Sweden, Dekk Partner is on the same level as the largest chain in that country, plus the group is also working very hard on expanding in Finland. Each year Dekk Partner holds a membership meeting and this year’s event will be held in the Latvian capital Riga, where it is expected that more than 500 guests will attend.

We Are Not Alone….

It appears it is not only UK motorists who don’t fully appreciate the importance of tyre safety. A nationwide US survey commissioned by the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA) has revealed 85 per cent of American motorists do not properly check tyre inflation pressure.

The RMA survey coincides with National Tire Safety Week, sponsored by the organisation and held between April 20 and 26. The RMA hopes that through the nationwide campaign it can share the basic message that spending five minutes every month checking tyre pressure can save both time and money.

“Record high gas prices should be an incentive for motorists to take every step possible to help make their cars and their money go further,” said RMA senior vice president, public affairs Dan Zielinski. “While our survey found that 61 per cent of motorists agreed that checking tyre pressure is very important to maximising fuel economy, only one in seven drivers properly perform this easy task.” And money will not only be saved at the petrol pump, Zielinski notes – premature tyre wear can be avoided by maintaining correct pressure. “Consumers can help their wallets and the environment by paying attention to their tyres so they last as long as possible, reducing disposal needs,” he commented.

Yokohama Reports on Vietnam Opening Ceremony

Yokohama has released its official statement on the opening ceremony at its new tyre making facility in Vietnam; the ceremony took place at the factory in Binh Duong Province, on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, on February 29, and some 200 guest attended, including Vietnamese government officials, the Japanese consul general in Vietnam, local tyre dealers, representatives from the local subsidiaries of Japanese car manufacturers and media representatives.

Yasuo Tominaga, Yokohama Rubber chairman and representative director of the board, and other executives hosted the ceremony. “We began tyre production 10 years ago in Vietnam,” said Tominaga during his speech. “As the new plant starts operation, our operation in this country will have another momentum for continued growth.”

New Record as 530 Exhibitors Sign-up for Reifen 2008

As the Essen show celebrates its silver jubilee (Reifen 2008 will be the 25th time the leading tyre trade exhibition has taken place), show organisers are reporting that this year’s show will be the biggest yet. This means that Reifen 2008 will have a record number of exhibitors (530), with this year’s show breaking the 500 barrier for this first time. At the same time exhibition area has increased 16 per cent in comparison with the last Essen show two years ago. And furthermore, 65 per cent more international exhibitors (2006:57%) are taking stands at a show that has become Europe’s leading tyre trade exhibition.

New markets in Eastern Europe

Stagnant markets in Germany and Western Europe have made many retreaders, as well as material, machinery and system suppliers, search for new sales markets right on their own doorstep: in Eastern Europe and Russia. In recent years many of these companies have been able to establish a respectable market representation, as has been the case for RuLa GmbH from Schraden, near Dresden in Eastern Germany and its subsidiary “Berliner Runderneuerungswerk”. Today, every second retreaded tyre produced in the company’s two production sites close to Dresden and in Berlin is sold in these new export markets in Eastern Europe and beyond. And as managing director Detlev Biermann confides, even his “vision” of eventually establishing a production site in Russia is feasible.
