Hayes Lemmerz Bags New Production Contracts

New business agreements with a number of existing and new customers are being received with gratitude by a financially beleaguered Hayes Lemmerz International. On June 5 the company announced its Saraburi plant in Thailand will produce 16-inch alloy wheels for the Toyota Scion. This new award, Hayes Lemmerz notes, provides additional volume for the company, which is already a major supplier to Toyota in many parts in the world. In addition, the Thai plant has received new business awards to produce 14-inch alloy wheels for existing customer Nissan as well as 15-inch alloy wheels for a new customer, Nissan subsidiary Autech Japan, Inc.

Marangoni Launches RING24h Breakdown Service

According to Marangoni, research shows that each year 13 per cent of trucks and buses experience tyre problems. This is clearly a major issue for the road transport industry, not only in terms of related costs (service, vehicle and driver downtime, wages that still have to be paid, along with a less efficient usage of resources) but also due to the late delivery penalties imposed upon transport companies and the consequent potential loss of customers. When such unplanned stoppages occur abroad, the possibility of language barriers when contacting the breakdown service also exists.

Jantsa Looking for Customers in Southeast Asia

Since its establishment in 1977, Turkish wheel manufacturer Jantsa has constantly worked towards building up and expanding its export business. Today its wheels are exported to over 80 countries worldwide, Jantsa export area manager Europe Omar Oztan told Tyres & Accessories. In fact, three out of every four wheels produced by Jantsa is destined for export. A region of increasing interest for the Turkish company is Southeast Asia. For this reason the company decided this year to once again exhibit at Tyrexpo Asia.

A Global Concern

The increasing globalisation of the automotive industry is an indisputable fact. Today’s leading companies, such as Toyota, General Motors, Renault/Nissan, Volkswagen and a handful of others, view expansion into as-yet untapped markets as a means of ensuring the profitable growth that established – and increasingly saturated – markets cannot deliver. A replacement for the masses of two and three wheeled vehicles still serving as family transport in various parts of the world is a well recognised need, and in several emerging markets the race is on to introduce “people’s car” that offers the right blend of modernity, efficiency and price. Exactly who will be first to produce such a widely-accepted car remains to be seen: It may be one of the smaller international manufacturers that seizes the inititave, or perhaps an emerging market company such as India’s Tata or China’s Chery. What is more certain, however, is that the the companies best placed to grow in the future are those that locate their centres of production in the markets where growth is taking place – and this is every bit as true for wheels as it is for the vehicles they are fitted to.

Brisa & Pirelli Production Resumes in Turkey

Production is one more underway at the Brisa/Bridgestone and Pirelli factories in Turkey. Both companies halted the manufacture of tyres late in February to realign output with demand, and resumed operations on March 3.

Production at the two companies’ factories restarted with the midnight shift on March 3, said labour union representative Hüseyin Çakar. Over the past week 2,200 workers, 1,072 at Brisa Bridgestone and the remainder at Turk Pirelli Tire Corporation, were placed on paid leave.

Turkish Tyre Factories Pause Production

Two of the largest tyre manufacturing plants in Turkey paused production for a week following reduced OE demand. The Brisa (Bridgestone/Sabanci) plant which produces Lassa branded tyres initiated a week-long production break in order to “realign production” company representatives told Tyres & Accessories. Turkish Pirelli Tyres Corporation also halted production at its factory in the north-western province of Kocaeli, according to the Hurriyet newspaper. Around 2,200 workers are employed at the two plants, 1,072 of which work for Brisa and will remain on the pay roll, Turkish Tyre-Labor Union representative Huseyin Cakar told Hurriyet.

Turkey’s Brisa to Start Production Suspension

Brisa has announced to the stock exchange that it will suspend production in Turkey for a week starting tomorrow (5 February, 2009) following a slowdown in domestic and foreign demand. The company is a joint venture between Sabanci Holding and Bridgestone.

Kenda Supplying Iran’s Largest Carmaker

Kenda has reported the commencement of an OE agreement with Iran’s largest car producer, the Saipa group. Since November 2008, the Taiwanese manufacturer’s tyres have been fitted as original equipment on Kia Pride models built by Saipa under licence. The vehicle, fitted with Kenda’s KR23-Komet Plus tyre in size 165/65R13, is sold in a number of export markets, including Azerbaijan, Armenia, Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Lebanon, Syria, Sudan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Morocco, Kyrgyzstan, Venezuela, Yemen, Uzbekistan.

The 3rd Azerbaijan International Spare Parts, Accessories and Service Equipment Exhibition

The Autoparts Exhibition has become an important meeting place for the representatives of the automobile industry for exchanging information and experiences. AutoParts 2009 will present automobile parts, engines and mechanics, accumulators, electric equipment and electronics, gearboxes, exhaust systems, steering control, break systems, suspensions, automobile accessories, audiosystems, technical maintenance of automobiles, production equipment and tuning. The AutoParts exhibition is intended for exhibitors who supply materials, equipment and services for the automobile industry and automobile operation. Pirelli Workers in Turkey Demonstrate Against Layoffs

Employees at Pirelli’s facility in Kartepe, Turkey have taken part in a sit-in protest at the factory site after hearing news that 80 workers had been laid off. Workers at the Türk Pirelli factory stopped production late on January 26 and many occupied the factory. According to the Lastik-İş labour union, all 1,150 factory employees took part in the sit-in.

Pirelli Inaugurates China “Tire Campus”

On 16 January Pirelli inaugurated its new Pirelli Tire Campus in Yanzhou, Shandong. Pirelli China CEO, Giuseppe Cattaneo commented: “The inauguration of the Tire Campus has further marked the commitment of Pirelli to play a leading role in the tyre industry especially in the high end segment. Apart from the tyre industry, the auto industry including OE customers and Car Concessionaires will also benefit from Pirelli Tire Campus’s training program and better equipped with advanced tyre technology and professionalism.”

Together with its Tire Campus Training Centre at the Istituto Piero Pirelli in Milan, the new initiative is a reflection of the effort Pirelli Tires has put on the continuous training of its internal and external resources as a fundamental element for continuous product and technology innovation of Pirelli Tires.

TRIB Welcomes Nine New Members

A number of companies from around the globe have joined the ranks of the Tire Retread & Repair Information Bureau (TRIB). Brisa Employees Occupy Factory Following Job Cut Announcement

Turkey’s Dogan News Agency has reported on around 1,000 Brisa employees barricading themselves inside the company’s tyre manufacturing facility in Izmit. The factory occupation and an associated halt in production is said to have taken place to protest the unexpected announcement of more than 30 job cuts.

Brisa announced on December 18 that it had terminated contracts of 32 workers at the plant due to falling sales figures and lower product demand. Executives of the employees’ union are said to have joined the protest.

Goodyear Turkey Halting Production for 10 Days, Says Union Leader

Production at two factories operated by Goodyear in Turkey will be halted for ten days in December and January, says the president of the country’s petroleum, chemical and tyre union. The factories in Adapazari and Kocaeli will be closed between December 12 and 17 and then from January 2 – 7 due to reduced demand. Union president Abdullah Karacan added that production at the factories had decreased between 30 per cent and 60 per cent.

Comings and Goings

On May 24, 2008 tyre industry steel cord producer Bekaert and China’s Anshan Iron and Steel Group Corporation (Ansteel), one of the world’s leading steel producers, signed a memorandum of understanding outlining the terms of a close future partnership between the two companies. As part of the arrangement both firms agreed to explore strategic cooperation projects in order to better address the growing demand for advanced wire products on the Chinese market.
