UK truck tyre wholesaler International Tyres has secured an exclusive agreement to introduce the Riken brand of truck, bus and coach tyre into the UK. According to the company, the UK introduction of the brand (which is part of the Michelin-produced stable of products) has been fuelled by “strong demand for mid-range products”.

Award-winning haulier Dixon International is switching to Michelin X Line Energy tyres across its fleet, after a successful trial showed it could slash fuel use by more than five per cent.
Continental has begun producing and distributing radial truck tyres in the Indian market ahead of the product range’s official launch there on 1 April. The tyre maker says its initial truck radial capacity in India is 220,000 tyres a year; these will be distributed to a dealer network that contains more than 1,400 outlets in over 70 cities across the country. The first products to be launched include the HSR2 steer tyre and HDR2 drive tyre for freight carrying vehicles and the HSX2 and HDX2 coach tyres.
Additional space to expand Michelin’s Waterville truck and OTR tyre plant in Canada has been found – at the town’s civilian airport. According to Tire Review, on 10 March councillors in Nova Scotia’s King County voted to close Waterville Municipal Airport on 30 September and make the airport land available for purchase by the province or Michelin. While the tyre maker has not confirmed any expansion, it is understood that the layout of the plant and its equipment is such that expanding onto the land currently occupied by the airport is the only option open to Michelin at the Waterville site.
German wholesaler the Hämmerling Group reports a positive response at this month’s Tyrexpo Africa show in Johannesburg, with considerably more dealers, wholesalers and forwarding agents visiting the Hämmerling stand during the three exhibition days. A focus for Hämmerling at Tyrexpo Africa was its Athos and Mäxx truck tyres, Talas steel truck rims and Sämm truck retreads.
Exclusive importer and distributor of several budget brand truck and bus radial tyre product lines to the UK, Speke-based wholesaler Kirkby Tyres says it has sold over one million Double Coin truck tyres into the replacement market to date, and this partnership now includes a regional and all-position tyre built for urban and regional bus applications.
Bridgestone’s newest passenger transport commercial vehicle tyre, the U-AP 001, will be available in the UK from April. The urban bus and coach specialist product, designated by the first letter in its name as part of Bridgestone’s new nomenclature convention, is an all-position tyre developed for city environments. The manufacturer has also upgraded the load capacity of its European M788 Evo tyre, the “backbone” of its bus and coach tyre offering, in order to cope with the heavier weight of Euro VI vehicles.
Giti Tire’s expansion to its GT Radial commercial vehicle hot cure bead-to-bead retread tyre range will be announced officially at The Commercial Vehicle Show 2014. GT Radial will display the GDR690 GT REE Tread drive position regional tyre available in 295/80 and 315/80 sizes from its stand in Hall five (C60). Like the existing GTR990 385/65R22.5 super single, it will be solely manufactured using only GT Radial casings.
Michelin has announced the expansion of the X Line Energy commercial vehicle tyre range, which the manufacturer says is its “most fuel-efficient” ever. Joining the 315/70 R 22.5 X Line Energy tyres, launched in October 2012, are the 315/80 R 22.5 X Line Energy Z (multi-position) and 315/80 R 22.5 X Line Energy D (drive) tyres.
Following last year’s roll out of its third generation coach and bus tyre range, Continental will turn its attention to goods vehicles at the CV Show 2014. Conti plans to showcase the first two products from its goods vehicles range: the ContiEcoPlus and the Conti Hybrid. The manufacturer has begun a new naming system for its TBR tyres, with the nomenclature designed to describe more clearly the application the product is intended for.
Two years after bringing its first hot cure retread tyre to the UK market with the GTR990 regional trailer pattern in size 385/65R22.5, GT Radial will launch a further two products as part of its REE Tread programme. The GDR690 regional commercial vehicle drive pattern will be available in 295/80 and 315/80 sizes, and will be produced, like the super single product, by a major retread producer in the south east of England. As with the previous tyre, it will be manufactured using only GT Radial casings. Tyrepress discussed the extension to the retread range with sales and marketing director Truck and Bus Tony McHugh and marketing director – Europe Commercial Tires, Peter Foulkes at Giti Tire (UK)’s new headquarters in Cheshire, near Manchester.

Chinese tyre maker Aeolus says it intends to use its presence at this year’s Commercial Vehicle Show to demonstrate the value/performance proposition offered by the brand to buyers and specifiers of commercial tyres. The company plans to exhibit its full range of truck, bus, coach and van tyres in conjunction with exclusive UK distributor Kings Road Tyres.
