Michelin has selected to use autonomous trucks made by Einride within its supply chain. According to the company, roll-out will commence in 2020, initially with the deployment of Einride’s T-pod – an autonomous, electric truck – at Michelin sites in France.
Cooper Tire has introduced a new long haul trailer (LHT) tyre, which completes the company’s signature Cooper Pro Series product line-up with fitments at each tractor/trailer wheel position. The Cooper Pro Series LHT joins the Cooper Pro Series long haul drive and long-haul steer tyres that were previously introduced. The new trailer tyre is available in 295/75 R22.5, with additional sizes becoming available later this summer.
With the launch of the Duravis R002, Bridgestone is offering fleets an “ultra-durable” tyre that is designed to lower operational costs per kilometre through “outstanding wear performance and optimised fuel efficiency.” The main four Bridgestone Duravis R002 sizes will be available as of September 2019, with six additional sizes arriving next year. The arrival of the Duravis R002 will simplify Bridgestone’s line-up in the versatility segment by replacing all current products.
Northern Ireland’s Kerr’s Tyres & Auto is investing£2.5 million in a new company HQ, featuring a distribution centre and retail centres. According to the company, the expansion project will create 20 jobs, bringing the total number of employees in the company to over 100.
The size of the UK truck tyre market by sell-out unit volume fell 9.8 per cent in 2018 set against the backdrop of European import tariffs, according to GfK data presented at Autopromotec 2019. But what do the tell us about the effectiveness of the tariffs?
At the time of going to press, the President of the United States of America is mid-way through a state visit to the UK. But all this is set against the backdrop of all-out trade war between the US and China at the same time that Europe is involved in somewhat more Cold War-esque trade skirmishes with China as well. The questions are: do such measures work? And what do they mean for the tyre business?
Michelin has expanded its X Multi T2 commercial tyre range with the launch of four new 17.5-inch sizes for low platform trailers, such as step frames, car transporters and double-decks. The new sizes are 215/75 R17.5, 235/75 R17.5, 245/70 R17.5 and 205/65 R17.5.
Hail, CESAR. A year after having the Conti360° fleet service administration tool integrated into its system landscape, European truck and trailer rental firm PEMA says it is delighted with the benefits it brings. The Continental-developed fleet administration system provides digitalised tyre management for the more than 18,000 commercial vehicles in the PEMA rental fleet, allowing vehicle- and service-relevant data to be continuously exchanged and updated via a user interface.
Goodyear has extended its partnership with the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) as the exclusive tyre provider for the FIA European Truck Racing Championship for a further three years. The announcement, which will see racing trucks run on specially developed Goodyear Truck Racing Tyres, coincides with the beginning of the 2019 season, which takes place in Misano, Italy on 26 May. 1,500 horsepower, 5.5 tonne trucks will race at speeds of up to 160 km/h with acceleration similar to a high performance sports car.
With the launch of the IntelliSens UVS01HD, BH Sens now offers a universal tyre pressure monitoring sensor (TPMS) for commercial vehicles. Coverage includes other sensors manufacturer applications on all Mercedes Benz trucks and buses. The launch also coincides with the release of two new Truck TPMS diagnostic tools manufactured by Ateq (VT Truck) and Bartec (Tech700). All this is being presented at Autopromotec in Bologna (Italy).
Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service will move its heavy fire appliances to a 100 per cent Michelin policy, after testing demonstrated the tyres could outperform its existing competitor fitments. The service called on Michelin to demonstrate the capabilities of its 315/70 R 22.5 X Multi Z tyre, as it explored options for replacing its existing policy, which was not delivering on longevity.
Global Michelin licensee Wheely-Safe is celebrating after its Michelin Wheel Security and Tyre Pressure Management System (TPMS) Heavy Fleet secured the prestigious Transport Technology of the Year Award at the National Technology Awards in London recently.

According to the company, this tyre offers excellent handling performance and grip on wet and snowy roads. And what’s more, it is expected to help boost sales during the next winter period.
