Following the announcement that tyres aged 10 years and older will be banned from lorries, buses and coaches on roads in England, Scotland and Wales, campaign group Tyred – which led efforts to achieve a ban – has welcomed the news as “a positive step forward”. However, the group also warned of twin tyre fitment configuration loophole.
Government bans fitment of 10 years and older truck and bus tyres
Tyres aged 10 years and older will be banned from lorries, buses and coaches on roads in England, Scotland and Wales in a boost to road safety, Roads Minister Baroness Vere announced today (Wednesday 15 July). The news follows extensive campaigning from the Tyred group as well as industry associations, which resulted in a government consultation last year.
ETRMA data confirms steep drop in replacement tyre sales
ETRMAThe second quarter of 2020 provided the worst quarterly sales results in recorded memory, the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) states. Publishing its members’ replacement tyre sales for the Covid-19 pandemic stricken quarter, ETRMA secretary general Fazilet Cinaralp said: “The tyre sector’s full recovery is still far away. For the moment, we can only hope for the market to stabilise in the second half of the year. Our outlook for 2020 remains bleak with a double-digit drop in sales expected across all segments.”

Fowler Welch renews contract with Bandvulc Tyres
ContinentalFowler Welch has extended its long-running tyre fitment and management contract with Continental Tyres subsidiary and retread specialist Bandvulc. Continental and Bandvulc tyres will be specified across the entire Fowler Welch fleet of 450 Euro 6 trucks and 750 temperature-controlled trailer units for a further three years, continuing the relationship between the companies, who have worked together since 2011.
Pyramids Tires: $350 million Egyptian factory begins manufacturing
Pyramid TiresPyramids Tires, a new tyre manufacturer based in Port Said, northeast Egypt, saw its first tyres roll off the production line on 9 May 2020. The factory currently manufactures motorcycle, forklift and agricultural tyres as part of the first phase of the plant’s development. The second phase, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022, will see the company add passenger car, truck and OTR tyres to its portfolio.

BFGoodrich Cross Control 2 expands construction tyre range
BFGoodrichBFGoodrich has launched the Cross Control 2, adding to its heavy truck tyre range for construction applications. It is the brand’s first second-generation product to be introduced into the UK and Irish markets. Available as a steer and drive tyre, the new fitment is targeted at tippers and mixers working in the construction industry and is designed to withstand even the most aggressive of surfaces. The next generation range is available as a 315/80 R22.5 Cross Control S2 (steer), 315/80 R22.5 Cross Control D2 (drive) and 13 R22.5 steer and drive.
Michelin UK reopening Stoke headquarters in mid-July

Westlake launching new Thai-made truck tyres
ZC RubberZC Rubber is launching its second generation of Westlake WSA2LT, WAS2, WDA2LT, WDA2, WSM2 and WDM2 all-steel truck and light truck tyres into the European market effective 1 July 2020. Michelin become BNP Paribas Rental Solutions preferred tyre supplier
MichelinMichelin has signed a new tyre supply agreement with one of Europe’s largest asset finance, leasing and rental specialists. The tyre manufacturer’s Services & Solutions division will supply all tyres to BNP Paribas Rental Solutions’ UK fleet. It will also fully manage the nationwide fleet of specialist mission-critical vehicles. Its vehicles have individual policies tailored to meet the needs of BNP Paribas Rental Solutions’ customers.
Dunlop launches SP247 all-weather trailer tyre
GoodyearDunlop has launched the SP247 trailer tyre, which the company says offers “extended all-weather performance, high mileage and low cost per kilometre”. The SP247 replaces the Dunlop SP246 range.

ContiAcademy offers online REACT licence renewal
ContinentalContinental has become the first tyre manufacturer to offer commercial tyre technicians the chance to gain and renew their REACT licence online via the ContiAcademy.
The new online offering has been set up to ensure technicians working across the UK can remain up to date with REACT (Roadside Emergency Action Concerning Technicians) licencing, despite restrictions on public interaction ongoing in light of Covid-19.
