Sheffield Fitters Celebrate 45 Years of Tyres

Two Sheffield tyre fitters are still working at the same company 45 years after first picking up a spanner there. Keith Booth, a truck tyre fitter based on Stainiforth Road, and Peter Staton, manager of the Dexel Tyre’s Frecheville branch, are among eleven key workers recognised by Dexel for working over 25 years at the firm. Between them, the group have racked up 394 years, an average of 33 years each. Keith Booth is still fitting truck tyres for local and national fleets including Dexel’s 24/7 motorway breakdown service.

Need Forklift Tyres?

Kirkby Tyres reports that it has been involved in the supply of forklift truck tyres for around 40 years. The company is sole UK agent for Double Coin radial products and Armour Crossply industrial tyres, which are normally sold complete with a tube and flap.

Yokohama Raising Prices

(Akron/Tire Review) In the US Yokohama Tire Corp. said it will increase prices on all of its tyre lines as of 1 October. The increase includes all Yokohama and Mohawk branded lines, as well as associate and private brand produced by Yokohama. The increases of up to 7 per cent on passenger, light truck /SUV and medium truck tyres, and up to 8 per cent on OTR tyres, Yokohama said. In-line adjusts will also be made, Yokohama said, and will be announced later.

Superdrive Tyre to Launch at IAA Show

September’s IAA International Commercial Vehicle Show 2006 will feature the official launch of Continental Truck Tyres’ fuel and weight-saving HDL1 Superdrive drive-axle tyre. In the UK Conti, along with other tyre makers, is planning to lobby legislators to get wide single tyres like Superdrive made legal for 44 tonne GVW roadtrains on British roads.

RMA: US Tyre Shipments to Decrease

(Akron/Tire Review) US tyre shipments this year are expected to decrease by 2.8 per cent compared to 2005, reflecting an overall slowdown in the US economy, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA). While GDP growth was 5.6 per cent in the first quarter, second-quarter growth slowed substantially to 2.5 per cent, said the RMA. “Slower growth and higher energy costs appear to be forcing consumers to prioritise spending including postponing tyre replacement,” the organization said.

Bridgestone Americas Closing Tyre Plant in Chile

(Akron/Tire Review) Bridgestone Americas Holding’s Bridgestone/Firestone Chile S.A. (BFC) unit said it is closing its Coquimbo, Chile, plant at year’s end. The company said that because of “intense competition from low-cost producers, the plant is not globally competitive and is projected to begin losing significant amounts of money with no viable strategy to reverse the losses.” The plant produces mass market and bias ply tyres and bias tyres.

North America’s Largest Independent Tyre Exporter

Hercules Tire International, based in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, is the largest independent tyre exporter in North America, with warehouses in Canada, the USA and China. The company’s export lines cover a vast range of different brands, prices and grades of tyre, from passenger car and light truck tyres to very large off-the-road and speciality tyres. Hercules’ own brands include Hercules, Merit, Electra and Ironman – all of which are manufactured in the USA and China.

Pirelli UK Promotes Truck Tyre Business

The role of introducing Pirelli’s “Truck Tyres in Revolution” slogan fell to UK managing director, Dominic Sandivasci. “When you think of Pirelli, truck tyres is not the first image that comes to mind. That’s about to change,” he explained. Why now? “Because we’re ready,” comes the reply. According to Sandivasci the company known as the “Giorgio Armani of the tyre industry” is now poised to attack the truck replacement market and go for growth. In short the Italian manufacturer is looking for “ways of working that go beyond existing partnerships.” And this basically means rejuvenating its position in the truck tyre market. One way the company is seeking to achieve this is by transferring the success of its Pirelli driver scheme into the truck arena, while another is the launching a new online tyre management system – B2Fleet.

Conti Sales Up, Margin Stable

The importance of Continental AG’s Automotive Systems and ContiTech divisions shone through once again as the company published its first half 2006 figures. The two non-tyre divisions achieved sales of 4329.2 million euros and 60 per cent of group EBIT between them, while the tyre divisions both bore the brunt of increased raw material prices despite increased sales.

Conti, BFNAT Announce Price Increases

(Akron/Tire Review) Continental Tire North America and Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire have both announced prices increases. CTNA said it is increasing prices on all Continental, General, Semperit and private brand medium truck tyres by up to 5 per cent, effective 1 August.

BFNAT said it will boost prices on its Bridgestone, Firestone, Fuzion, Dayton, associate and private brand tyre lines by up to 4 per cent, effective 1 September. The increase includes OE, replacement and export sales, and covers passenger, light truck/SUV, medium truck, agricultural and OTR tyre lines.

Leading UK Independents Win with Truck Tyre Inspections

Every month InfoRoute Truck Tyre Manager (TTM) processes tyre inspection details for over 8,000 trucks and trailers across the UK. Glyn Cainey, truck tyre director at Dexel Tyre Company, says: “TTM helps staff with no specialist computer knowledge improve service, increase fitter productivity and win more business”. Dexel, one of the larger UK independent tyre companies with nearly 40 truck tyre service vehicles, has used TTM for over two years. A team of three inspectors use TTM to find and organise work, ensuring that fleets are economically and safely managed.

Kumho Recalls US Light Truck Tyres

Kumho Tire is to voluntarily recall 78,321 light truck tyres sold in the North American market due to blisters on sidewalls. The tyres to be recalled are nine types of product under the Venture HT 824 and Venture AT KL78 series. They were manufactured in Kumho Tire’s factory in Nanjing, China, exclusively for the U.S. and Canadian markets.

Michelin Brand Tyres Now Made in Mexico

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin brand passenger and light truck/SUV tyres are now being produced in Mexico for the very first time. Michelin North America upgraded its production facilities at its plant in Queretaro to allow Michelin-brand tyre production.

Maxxis Signs Up for Brityrex International 2007

Maxxis International is the first of the major tyre manufacturers to confirm it is to attend Brityrex International, which takes place at the G-MEX Convention Centre in Manchester from 1-3 May 2007. All exhibitors will be located in one hall with 10,500 square metres of space and the Maxxis stand will be in a prime position adjacent to the entrance.

Maxxis is continuing to develop its credentials within the PCR market while also expanding its UK product portfolio and is actively looking to recruit specialist distributors for its new light and heavy truck tyres.

Ceat Ramping Up Radial Imports, Production

(Akron/Tire Review) Indian tiremaker Ceat say it will increase imports of radial truck tyres to 2,000 units per month within the next 18 months. Currently, Ceat imports some 500 tyres per month, produced for Ceat by Pirelli at its manufacturing plant in Turkey. “Seeing a gradual increase in demand for domestic radial truck tyres, we intend to step up our imports from Pirelli,” Ceat managing director Paras Chowdhary told Indian media.
