Double Coin Introduces North America Fleet Program

Double Coin Truck Tire is rolling out a fleet programme for its North American customers. Known as the Double Coin National Account Fleet Program, the scheme enables medium and large-sized trucking fleets to purchase high quality Double Coin TBR products at competitive pricing through the extensive dealer network across North America.

“Fleets that have a large geographic coverage across North America currently purchase Double Coin truck tyres from local dealers independently. This program now allows these fleets to receive standardised, centralised pricing and billing direct from Double Coin,” company officials said.

MMH Supplying Eldan Equipment at Home and Abroad

West Sussex based marketer and distributor of recycling equipment, MMH Recycling Systems, reports it is continuing to supply top quality equipment for the tyre recycling industry through its partnership with Danish manufacturer Eldan Recycling A/S. Nigel Sowerby New Director Truck Tyres at Goodyear Dunlop UK

Goodyear Dunlop UK has appointed Nigel Sowerby as Director, Truck Tyres in their UK and Ireland business, effective 1 March 2008. Robin Sharpe, current Director, Truck Tyres will handover to Nigel Sowerby to ensure during February before Sharpe moves on to a new assignment to be announced next month. Sowerby joined Goodyear Dunlop in 2005 as Southern Area Manager for the company’s TruckForce commercial vehicle tyre servicing network, before being promoted to the position of Manager, TruckForce, UK, in 2006.

Commenting on the appointment, current Director Truck Tyres, Robin Sharpe, commented: “Nigel and his team have done an outstanding job in building the TruckForce service network as a ‘Best in Class’ provider to the road transport industry. The time is now right to consolidate the management team to deliver a truly focused tyre and service offering, and I look forward to my next challenging role within Goodyear Dunlop.”

From Tyres to Playgrounds With Charles Lawrence

Towards the end of last year Michelin signed a deal with Newark based recycling firm Charles Lawrence International, guaranteeing that, each year, a minimum of 6,000 tonnes of its truck tyres will be used to make children’s play and sports surfaces. Each week some 200 tonnes of material are to be shipped from Michelin in Dundee and Ballymena to the Nottinghamshire recycler.

The deal is a mutually beneficial one, as Charles Lawrence International managing director Roger Hicks explains: “The formal agreement to take 6,000 tonnes of Michelin tyres per year comes after extensive trialling and a lot of discussion. We needed to be sure we could take a consistent amount of tyres each week so that we had a secure supply of materials and so Michelin could find other uses for the old tyres we can’t use – which I know they have done. The figure is a minimum standard and we would realistically expect to be taking at least 10,000 tonnes per year.”

In January the Tyre Recovery Association announced that Devon based retreading specialist Bandvulc had signed on as its latest member. The company’s entry into the TRA marks the first occasion in which a company specialising in retreading has held membership in the recycling and waste tyre organisation. And so, when looking at the latest TRA membership list and noting the retreader amongst a host of members engaged in producing tyre crumb for various end uses, one may be tempted to ask why a retreader has joined a recycling organisation – but perhaps a more pertinent question would be this: despite the presence of 29 precure and 15 mould cure retreaders in the UK market, why doesn’t tyre retreading more readily spring to mind when the issue of tyre recycling is mentioned?

Hakkapeliitta Truck E Points to New Truck Tyre Range

Nokian Tyres introduced the Hakkapeliitta Truck E a new tyre for trucks and buses, designed for the most demanding winter conditions. This new winter drive tyre is also the first member of the Nokian Hakkapeliitta Truck product family. The tyre’s tread design features more than 1,100 efficient transverse sipes, forming a dense network that helps maximise grip. The tyre is also equipped with special sipe activators that are very sensitive to the road surface and rapidly activate the sipes, particularly in changing temperatures and road conditions.

“Nokian Hakkapeliitta Truck E is the result of years of intensive work; it’s a new-generation product that combines the excellent grip and resistance properties that professional drivers value very highly,” says Teppo Siltanen, Product Manager, Nokian Truck Tyres. Development work drew on the experiences of the highly commended Nokian Noktop 41 traction surface and the Nokian NTR-817 truck tyre.

Double Coin to Open New Truck Tyre Factory

News

A report printed in a motor industry publication indicates that Double Coin Holdings Co. plans to open a new truck tyre factory in the final quarter of 2008. According to Automotive News, the facility to be build in Chongqing, China, will be able to produce 2.5 million truck radials per year, increasing the company’s annual truck tyre capacity to around 7 million units.

Double Coin has neither confirmed nor denied whether the company has plans to produce passenger car tyres at the facility. When asked this question, company spokesperson Sun Wen simply told Automotive News “it depends on the market.”

Nizhnekamskshina to Increase Size Range

The tyre range produced at Russia’s Nizhnekamskshina tyre factory will increase to 21 sizes this year, the company reports. And according to company representatives, total planned production for 2008 is to be 12.3 million tyres, slightly less than last year. Nizhnekamskshina currently has a capacity of 12.9 million units per annum.

Between 2001 and 2007 some 4.8 billion roubles (£100 million) has been invested into the 37 year old formerly government owned facility, and production at the Nizhnekamskshina plant focuses upon three key segments – passenger car tyres, truck tyres and tyres for agricultural equipment. Factory output is said to cover 30 per cent of Russia’s production output, and of the total volume, 23 per cent are delivered to OEM customers, 59 per cent to the domestic aftermarket, and the remainder exported.

Fowler Welch Coolchain Gives Michelin the Thumbs Up

Specialist food distribution company Fowler Welch Coolchain has reported an increase in operating hours and less tyre related breakdowns after switching to a Michelin X-Terminal T tyre policy for its fleet of Terberg tugs. The company operates tugs across its five distribution hubs to move trailers on and off loading bays. The move to a Michelin policy follows a six-month tyre trial using a Terberg RT222 tug fitted with X-Terminal T tyres. This in-house trial saw the Michelin-shod tug carefully monitored, with weekly tyre inspections to check for wear and damage.

European, US Tyre Sales Reveal Mixed Results

Sales of summer passenger car tyres throughout Europe in 2007 are said to have increased by 3 per cent over 2006 figures, which in turn were a 2.5 per cent increase over those recorded in 2005. The information supplied to T&A indicates that, Europe-wide, 120.7 million summer pcr tyres were sold last year. This increase was offset by the second consecutive decline in passenger car winter tyre sales. In 2007 only 35.5 million units were sold in the whole of Europe, a decrease of 9.58 per cent on 2006, when 38.9 million winter passenger car tyres were sold. That year the number of winter tyres sold also decreased, dropping by 13.4 per cent from a 2005 high.

Bridgestone Designs Tire for Hummer HX Concept

Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire, in cooperation with General Motors, has designed a Dueler concept tyre for the Hummer HX concept sport utility truck, introduced by GM at the 2008 North American International Auto Show.

The 35-inch tall tyres, engineered specifically for the HX, are mounted to the concept car’s 20-inch rims and feature a striking, deep-skid directional tread pattern with large, stiff lugs that provide excellent traction on a variety of driving surfaces. The tread lugs, stretching halfway down the sidewall, offer extra grip in deep sand, snow and mud and protect the tyre from punctures during off-road activities, such as rock crawling, BFNAT said.

Techking Tires Expands its OTR Line-up

When visiting tyre shows in Asia or elsewhere in the world OTR tyres often dominate the the show landscape, giving the impression that almost every other manufacturer in the world is acting as an OTR tyre specialist and hoping to get a share of the grossly under-supplied market segment.

One such company that has managed to establish an intensive business relation with plenty of well-known players and even OEMs, within a very short period of time, is Techking Tires. And this separates Techking from some of the market “vagabonds” from the Far East that are here today and gone tomorrow and that change their focal business points as often as the market demands it. The number of different products and the number of available sizes which have been brought onto the market within just two years since the company started its business is impressive, to say the least. “I love the challenge,” says the founder of Techking Tires, Tech Wang, in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. The company hopes to reach another manufacturing milestone by the summer of 2008, when it is scheduled to launch 49 and even 51 OTR sizes.

Pirelli Now Producing Full Line-up in China

Currently nine of the world’s 10 largest tyre manufacturers have their own production bases in China. Among those companies that have recently chosen to venture into China is Pirelli. The Italian corporation has been operating a truck tyre production facility in China since the summer of 2005 before opening a new PCR tyre factory very recently in November 2007. At this stage Pirelli is still a relatively small player in the Chinese tyre market, but it is this context that will enable the company to achieve an above average growth rate, says Luca Cico in an interview with Tyres & Accessories. now that it has managed to fulfil the demands of the Chinese tyre market with two production sites in operation.
