Konstrukta Supplies 2 Duplex Apex Lines to Yaroslavl Plant

Konstrukta Industry AS has signed, what it describes as “a significant contract” to supply two duplex apex extruding lines to Sibur-Russian Tyres’ Yaroslavl’s tyre production plant. The machines extrude two rubber compounds into the triangular cover that overlaps the bead. In this case the machines will be used in the production of truck tyres. The contract is being billed as the most significant of its kind in Russia this year and was reportedly gained ahead of Continental Machinery. No specific value has been attached to the contract, however the deal appears to be the fulfilment of promises to upgrade Sibur-Russian’s truck tyre product capacity reported by Tyres & Accessories more than a year ago.

Cooper Recall Now Includes Hercules, Pro Comp

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s March recall of light truck tyres now includes Hercules and Pro Comp models produced by the tyremaker. The NHTSA issued recall notices for 2,005 Hercules branded and for 1,206 Pro Comp tyres produced between December 2, 2007 and January 12 in size LT265/75R16 Load Range E. In March, Cooper began recalling some 48,037 Cooper branded and private brand light truck tyres. The private brand lines included tyres for TBC, American Car Care Centers, Nokian Tyre, and Sure Tire.

And these are important factors to take into account when considering that, according to HSE statistics, the manual handling of heavy objects accounts for 38 per cent of all workplace injuries requiring three or more days absence from work – the greatest single cause of work-related illness.

Continental Unveils HTR2 at CV Show

Continental has unveiled its new HTR2 “second generation” trailer tyre at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham. With 20 per cent more rubber in the tread area and new steel belt and bead designs, Continental claims the HTR2 offers the best rolling resistance in the segment and better retreadability than before. The HTR2 will be available immediately, initially in 385/65 R22.5. The launch is the first part of a two-year programme that will see the manufacturer replace 60 per cent of its truck range in the next two years.

Continental puts the increased performance offered by the HTR2 down to three new technologies incorporated in the trailer tyre’s design – the tread, the bead/belt construction, and the inner liner.

Tornel Takeover to Give JK 15.3 Million Unit Capacity

The 100 per cent acquisition of Mexico’s Tornel by JK Tyre, announced on April 11, sees the Indian tyre manufacturer become the country’s fourth-largest. The £34.19 million acquisition, which is expected to close by the end of May, will be funded through a special purpose vehicle (SPV) – a company created solely for this particular transaction – based in Mexico.

“We will raise the money through internal accruals and debt, which will be structured though a SPV,” commented JK Tyres & Industries’ vice-chairman & managing director Raghupati Singhania. “Tornel will be a fully-owned subsidiary of JK Tyres and there will be no dilution of the existing shareholding in the company. We shall also bring a rights issue in the next few months, which will be in the ratio of 3:1, to help bridge the funds for the acquisition. The price of the issue will be determined at the time of offer.”

Goodyear Introduces New NA Truck Tyres

Goodyear has added two new tyres to its North American regional truck tyre product portfolio. The company is introducing the Unisteel G149 RSA RH tyre for on-highway regional service and the Unisteel G150 HSA for school bus and city or neighbourhood driving.

The two tyres, with their differing intended applications, replace a single tyre. Steve McClellan, vice president of Goodyear commercial tyre systems, said, “Two is better than one, particularly when customers formerly had to use one tyre to do it all. In this case, we have focused each tyre on specific applications to better serve our customers with enhanced performance and treadwear.”

Position Paper: Proposed Tyre Noise Reduction Goals ‘Not Feasible’

A position paper produced by the ETRMA and recently obtained by the news agency Reuters indicates that the industry association retains its viewpoint on road noise reduction levels outlined last year. On October 18, 2007 the organisation sent a letter to the European Commissioner for Enterprise, Günther Verheugen, proposing voluntary reduction levels while cautioning that the reductions set out by the European Commission may lead to a compromising of road safety. The document obtained by Reuters appears to include similar content, and is said to call some of the Commission’s noise reduction goals “not feasible.”

Yokohama Tire Increasing OTR and Truck Tyre Prices

Yokohama Tire is increasing prices for OTR and medium truck tyres in North America, effective May 2008. Record increases in the cost of raw materials and power are the factors quoted as driving the upcoming rises, which will be up to five per cent for OTR tyres and six per cent for medium truck tyres. Passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres are not included in this latest price increase announcement.

“We have been doing our best to contain the soaring costs of raw material, manufacturing and transportation,” said Yokohama Dan King, Yokohama vice president of sales. “Unfortunately, Yokohama’s pricing must reflect these record costs.”

Goodyear Re-Tools Truck Tyre Site

Goodyear has reworked its commercial tyre Web site – www.goodyear.com/truck – making it easier for fleet maintenance managers and owners to take advantage of the company’s various educational tools and data, the tyremaker said. Steve McClellan, Goodyear vice president of commercial tyre systems, said the company is moving “more of its process controls online, and a new, more-relevant Web site is an obvious addition.” The site features a dealer locator; allows users to find tyres by application, wheel position or size; fleet management tools; information about Goodyear’s emergency roadside assistance program; information about software and Web-based tools to help track tyre costs, tyre performance and retreading; and tyre technology updates.

Marangoni Village Returns to Essen

Following its premiere at the 2006 show, the Marangoni Village is set to return to the Reifen Essen 2008 exhibition. In effect this means the Marangoni Group will share a single stand at Reifen Essen exhibiting what company representatives call a “world of tyres.” The Marangoni Village will be located in hall 3: 235, and is expected to feature the latest news, products, technology the Marangoni Group offers.

Marangoni Car Tyres has an annual turnover of more than 80 million euros (80% in Europe; 20% in the rest of the world) and operates a manufacturing facility based in Italy (in Anagni, Rome). For its part, Marangoni Car Tyres will show visitors new products for both summer and winter ranges and also extensions to the most important ranges of High Performance Summer tyres.

Cooper Releases the ‘Luxurious’ Zeon XSTA

Cooper Tire & Rubber has released in North America a product it calls one of the most luxurious all-season sport truck tyres it has yet produced. The new Cooper Zeon XSTA, designed for light trucks, SUVs and cross-over vehicles, integrates technology from Cooper’s all-weather performance ranges and features an asymmetrical tread pattern that combines dry traction and all-season capabilities.

Size range for the Zeon XSTA covers both OE sizes for sport trucks, SUVs and cross-over vehicles, as well as the popular plus fitments. This V speed-rated tyre will initially be offered in nine sizes, ranging from 18-, 22- and 24-inch diameters and will be produced at the company’s Texarkana, Arkansas, manufacturing facility. Cooper will also introduce 11 additional sizes, including 15- and 16-inch (H rated) and 17-inch (V rated) sizes in the third quarter of 2008.

Cooper and BFNAT Issue Recalls

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.’s recent recall of 48,037 light truck radials includes private brand and off-take models produced for and sold by TBC, American Car Care Centers, Nokian Tyres and Sure Tire. The NHTSA issued supplemental recall notices last week including the four brands. In addition, NHTSA announced a recall of a small quantity of truck tyres produced by Bridgestone/Firestone North American Tire.

The Cooper Tire recall impacting its private brand and off-take customers covers LT265/75R16 Load Range E tyres. For Sure Tire, the recall covers 295 of its Summit Trail Climber AT tyres produced between December 9 and December 15, 2007. For TBC, it covers 17,014 of its Wild Country Radial STX Sport and Wild Trac Radial LTR produced between December 2, 2007 and February 2, 2008. For ACCC, it covers 1,018 of its American Prospector A/T produced between December 2, 2007 and February 2, 2008. For Nokian, the recall covers 931 tyres produced between December 2, 2007 and February 8, 2008.

Indian Truck and Bus Tyre Exports Growing

Data released by India’s Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association indicates that exports of bus and truck tyres from this country increased 8.9 per cent between April 2007 and January 2008, with a total figure of 2.07 million units sold in this period. Total revenue from exports also grew during this period, by 4.6 per cent to Rs 17.35 billion (£218.4 million).

Michelin: Comprehensive Retreading Operations

More than any other company in the world it is Michelin that – at an early stage – began to produce retreaded truck tyres as part of its industrial operations, and has always understood retreading as an integral part of its new tyre business and incorporated it into all its industrial and marketing activities. The French corporation not only operates its Remix mould-cure production and cooperates with its pre-cure retreading partners across Europe; in the area of retreading Michelin is building on yet another cornerstone – the Laurent group, with its two production sites in Avallon, France, and Berlin, Germany. It is in particular the latter, the smaller location in terms of output, that plays a pivotal role in the ever-important Western and central Europe markets.

Hangzhou Zhongce Celebrates 50 Years

The Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company can trace its history back to 1958 and today the group produces a wide range of products. These include tyres for two-wheel vehicles and bicycles, passenger car tyres (bias and radial), truck and bus tyres (bias and radial), light truck tyres, industrial, solid and skidsteer tyres, agricultural and OTR tyres. In addition to tyres, the company’s product range includes rubber crawlers, belts, hoses and miscellaneous rubber products.

Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company has grown steadily over the past half century and is now one of China’s top 500 enterprises. The products are widely exported and the brand names – Tartu, Chao Yang, Goodride and Westlake – have become increasingly familiar to the tyre industry (and to motorists) outside their home country.
