Remoulding Truck Tyres with Insa Turbo

Hall Six’s Booth 307 at Reifen 2008 housed Industrias del Neumatico, S.A.U. from Aspe (Alicante) Spain, who were presenting their new Insa Turbo hot remoulded truck tyres, 4X4 off road tyres and winter car tyres. Also this year, the company exhibited their own private brand Rodatec, which is available in sizes between 15” and 19” and is manufactured by Nexen tyres.

The Spanish company’s focus for the future will be trained on Insa Turbo off road tyres and truck tyres to a large extent, with many new models due for release soon. The firm owns 70 workshops and their wholesale distribution covers all of Spain. However, over 60 percent of tyre production is exported to over 30 countries throughout the world.

Mastercraft Tires Appoint Silverline as UK Distributors

Mastercraft Tires, an associate brand of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company that offers a full range of products including passenger, light truck and medium truck tyres, has appointed Warwick-based Silverline International as its official UK distributor. The brand targets after market sales through wide compatibility and affordable pricing.

Silverline International has been in business for over 20 years, specialising in the supply of UHP and SUV wheels and tyres. The distributor’s concentration on this area of the market is particularly fitting to Mastercraft, as the brand itself possess a highly-acclaimed 4×4 range. Mastercraft sales manager, Andy Harris, said: “Silverline International is one of the leading independent tyre businesses in the country and we’re delighted that they are representing the Mastercraft brand.”

Analysts Downgrade Michelin Shares to Sell

Michelin shares have dropped by 6.44 per cent following Societe Generale SA’s decision to downgrade the leading French tyre manufacturer’s stock to ‘sell.’ Societe Generale had previously rated Michelin as “hold.”

According to the analysts, Clermont Ferrand-based Michelin is about to feel the pinch of slowing sales of new truck tyres in Europe: “The European market for new truck tyres will probably slow as of 2009, given the end of an equipment cycle as well as the clear deterioration in the economic climate.” According to Bloomberg, Michelin’s share price has fallen 43 per cent this year. Societe Generale estimates the tyre manufacturer’s share price may fall to 39 euros, a 17 euros drop in its previous price target of 56 euros.

Sibur Expands Into Europe

During May’s Essen show, plenty of rumours about Sibur Russian Tyres was bidding for Amtel-Vredestein were circulating. The difficult part was trying to pin someone down to go on the record and confirm what we all thought we knew at the time. Sibur Russian Tyres’ export department head, Oleg A Kataev, for example was tight-lipped when asked about the Amtel-Vredestein/Sibur negotiations. Instead, he was much more interested in explaining how Sibur’s European service has improved since the company opened a new office in Germany.

At the moment this means increasing supply into Germany and the neighbouring markets, particular with regard to Sibur Russian Tyre’s Tyrex truck brand. This direct, concerted sales effort remains a relatively new venture for the Russian company that has (since the deal with Amtel-Vredestein was completed – see elsewhere in this issue for further details) grown from a very strong to totally dominant position in the its domestic Russian market.

Techplus Launches Pioneering Saudi Safety Bands

Technology solutions company TechPlus of Saudi Arabia has unveiled its new Tyrelock safety band system. The device, which the company claims is fail-safe, takes the form of an aluminium strip placed around the tubeless tyre wheel rims of buses and heavy motor vehicles, covering the wheel’s shaped recess, or “well”. As a safety feature, it functions by preventing a tyre from being dislodged from the rim in the event of a burst or puncture, helping drivers retain control of their vehicles.

Treadsetters Aiming to Increase Durun Sales 400%

Telford-based wholesaler, Treadsetters is aiming to increase sales of its Chinese produced Durun brand this year by more than four times the 2007 figure. Last year Treadsetters, which holds the European distribution rights, sold roughly 120,000 tyres. This year the company is aiming to increase this to half a million. So far sales have largely been generated in the UK, but customers have also purchased through Treadsetters from as far afield as Spain, Italy, Germany, Netherlands, France and some African countries.

Price Increases For Michelin NA Products Announced

These days it comes as no surprise to learn of another price increase linked to rising raw material, energy and transportation costs. The latest to be announced comes from Michelin North America, who is increasing prices on a number of product lines.

US market prices for Michelin, BFGoodrich and Uniroyal passenger and light truck replacement tyres, plus those for private and associate brands, will rise by up to 12 per cent as of September 1. Michelin and BFGoodrich brand commercial truck tyres sold in the US replacement market will increase in price by as much as 8 per cent, also effective September 1. This price increase will also apply to Michelin Retread Technologies retreads, the company adds. On the same date motorcycle, scooter and bicycle tyre and tube prices will increase by up to 15 per cent on Michelin brand products sold in Canada, Mexico and the US. All two-wheel products delivered after August 31 will be invoiced at the new price.

Heuver Continues Spectacular Growth

Established in 1966 by Mans Heuver, Heuver Bandengroothandel has expanded from a small business (for which Mr. Heuver personally made tyre deliveries on his motorcycle) into a global organisation with a wholesale business for industry clients and a number of outlets – the Profile Tyrecenters – for both business and retail customers. Today the Netherlands based business is run by Mr. Heuver senior’s two sons, Bertus and Jan, and the growth continues.

To facilitate an expanding business base, two years ago the company opened a new 12,000 square metre facility in its hometown of Hardenberg. Now, reports Bertus Heuver, the company is looking at the need to build another 12,000 square metre premises. “Since we completed the new buildings in 2006, we’ve seen that the choices we make today enable us to accelerate our expansion plans,” he said. “In other words, we’re ahead of our goals. At the end of this year, we’ll be taking the next step in our development strategy and doubling our warehouse inventory.”

Bridgestone to Raise Japan Market Tyre Prices

As of September 1 prices for Bridgestone tyres, tubes and flaps sold in the Japan replacement market will increase, the company announced on June 26. The new pricing structure applies to both summer and winter tyres. Bridgestone adds that it will also ask original equipment manufacturers for significant increases in their tyre prices.

Specific replacement market price increases include five per cent for passenger car and light truck tyres, seven per cent for truck and bus tyres, per cent for OTR tyres, between seven and ten per cent for industrial vehicle tyres, three to ten per cent for motorcycle tyres, seven per cent for other kinds of tyres, and ten per cent for tubes and flaps.

Amtel-Vredestein Warns of Counterfeit Tyres

Amtel-Vredestein has alerted consumers that counterfeit Amtel tyres have been found at retail stores in some markets. The tyremaker believes that the use of these tyres may be dangerous. “Fake tyres are made of cheap rubber mix and low quality synthetic rubber,” commented Anatoly Volnov, head of Research and Quality control department at Amtel-Vredestein. “Threads of such tyres are very weak and not elastic enough, they also wear out rapidly. These fakes may lead to car accidents.”

The company reports that this year cheap imitations of certain Amtel branded light truck tyres have been discovered, notably imitations of the Amtel 185/75 R16 – Cargo AS K-156 and Kobra K-156. The counterfeit tyres combined the names of both models and appeared in the market as the Kobra Cargo КА-156.

Aeolus Placing a Focus upon Quality

Originally established by the Chinese government as an OTR manufacturer, Aeolus Tyre Co. Ltd. has, in its 43 years, become one of China’s top ten tyre producers. The company currently specialises in truck and earthmover tyres, manufactured at its 640,000 square metre factory in central China. Soon a second facility will also enter service. At the Reifen exhibition T&A spoke with company Europe Division Manager Mr. Cuiqiang Fu and vice general manager and chief engineer Mr. Yaoling Feng about the direction Aeolus is taking as a company and as a brand.

“Of greatest importance for Aeolus is an emphasis on quality, we always lay an emphasis on quality and technology,” states Mr. Feng. He notes that this focus lies at the heart of the company’s success. “The most important thing for management level at Aeolus is quality and improving the mindset of employees. All Aeolus employees know this brand and the factory would not exist without the quality of our product; all that Aeolus is today is due to that.”

ITS an Intelligent Tyre System

Continental AG has unveiled a new prototype cyber tyre technology, designed to demystify the tyre management process. The battery-less Intelligent Tyre System (ITS) fuses a range of existing TPMS functions with an RFID-like wireless communication facility that will enable the sensors in each tyre to communicate with a central processor inside the vehicle. The system’s tyre ID technology, coupled with a tyre age function is designed to advise motorists of their tyre’s suitability.

According to Continental representatives, the sensors will be installed into truck tyres initially, with the first Continental-produced cyber tyres rolling off the production line around 2010. Continental was exhibiting this and related technologies as part of a ContiSafetyExperience event, which the company held at the OAMTC (Austrian AA equivalent) centre in Teesdorf, Austria. ITS had its first outing as part of the Continental Truck Tyre Roadshow exhibit that visited the CV Show earlier this year.

High Import Duties Assure Continuation of Pakistan Tyre Smuggling

Afghanistan has developed a reputation as a centre of heroin smuggling activity; it is less widely known for another illegal cross-border trade – the smuggling of tyres into neighbouring Pakistan. Yet the importation of these sought after items appears to be well worth the effort and expense endured by those in the business, as the average price difference between the cost of a tyre to a smugger and an importer is said to be in the range of Rs3,000 to Rs5,000 (£22.50 to £37.60). Of the Rs3,000 minimum price difference, smugglers expend about Rs1,000 covering transport and bribe costs, leaving a respectable profit at the end.

Michelin Figures Reveal Varying Fortunes

Michelin reports healthy OE sales of radial truck tyres throughout Europe in May and for the 2008 year to date. Sales for the month were 11.2 per cent greater than those of a year earlier. Sales were significantly weaker in the replacement market, were a decline of 12.5 per cent on May 2007 was reported, and in both the OE and replacement segments of the European market. During the month unit sales for these dropped 4.9 and 4.3 per cent respectively. Sales of OE passenger car tyres for the period between January and the end of May, contrary to the month’s figures, were up 3.1 per cent, while the replacement sales dropped 1.9 per cent. Truck tyre OE sales increased 14.3 per cent in Europe between January and May, while sales in the replacement market was down 4.6 per cent on the five-month period of 2007.
