Reports: Modi Tyres Partnering Continental

Indian tyre manufacturer Modi Tyres has “re-forged” the Modi Continental technical and brand partnership it made with Continental AG in 2001. According to local news sources, the tyres manufactured under the agreement will now be marketed under the Continental brand only, rather than Modi Continental. The new partnership will reportedly be called Modi Tyre Company (MTC) and is described as “only technical in nature and does not involve any investment from the German tyre company.” According to the reports Modi Tyres is aiming to roll out 1.1 million truck tyres and tubes annually and expects to expand its network of dealers from 500 to 2,000. Continental already has a technical agreement with JK Tyres and the reports speculate that this deal may now end.

In a letter to President Obama, David Hartquist, executive director of the Committee to Support US Trade Laws (CSUSTL), encouraged the President to support a petition brought by the United Steelworkers union.

Toyo Tires is Back on Track

When at the start of the year Japanese manufacturer Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. put the brakes on expenditure in response to the global economic and financial crisis, the package of measures implemented were received with a shock: layoffs, massive budget cutbacks, withdrawal from the Tokyo Motor Show, restrictions upon travel for management and so on. Later it became public knowledge that top managers voluntarily forewent their bonuses. Since that time a collective sigh of relief has been breathed that some of the restrictions didn’t turn out to be as severe as first anticipated, and for Toyo’s factories in particular the tide has turned. "Our plant utilisation in Japan is already approaching a hundred per cent," comments Tatsuo Mitsuhata (44), executive vice president Toyo Tire Europe. The company’s Japanese competitors are somewhat lagging in this respect and their recovery not occurring as quickly as Toyo’s.

Toyo Ends China JVs, Announces Construction of New Factory

When building its all-new factory in China, Toyo Tire & Rubber will be going it alone. During a Board of Directors meeting on August 27, the company decided to end its joint venture agreements for tyre production in China. Toyo has operated Cheng Shin-Toyo Tire & Rubber (China) Co., Ltd. together with Taiwan’s Cheng Shin Rubber Ind. Co., Ltd. since the end of 1995, with a focus upon manufacturing car tyres and tubes for the Chinese market. The company also began a partnership, Cheng Shin-Toyo Tire (Xiamen) Co., Ltd., with Maxxis International Co., Ltd. in 2002, producing commercial vehicle radials. Both joint ventures have been terminated as of August 27.

Yokohama Expands China Operations

Yokohama Rubber Co. is reportedly expanding the capacity of its Hanzhou Yokokahama Tire Co. passenger car tyre plant in China. Hangzhou Yokohama’s annual capacity of 3 million units a year is expected to grow to 4.1 million passenger and light truck tyres from 2011, following investment of 3 billion yen (214 million yuan). This is the fourth capacity expansion since Hanzhou Yokohama started production in 2003. Yokohama makes its ASPEC A349 low rolling resistance tyre in China and expects general car ownership to increase 10 per cent annually in the years to come.

A New Day for Tyre Recycling in Kazakhstan

A new facility owned by the Kazakhstan Rubber Recycling company has become the Central Asian country’s first end of life tyre recycling plant to enter operation. The facility, located in the capital city of Astana, is equipped with machinery built by Germany’s MeWa Recycling Maschinen und Anlagenbau and holds a capacity of around 11,000 car and truck tyres per annum.

Goodyear Adds Texas Dealer as Authorized Retreader

Heintschel Tire & Service Inc. is converting its commercial truck tyre retreading operation to Goodyear’s pre-cure and patented UniCircle retreading processes at its retreading plant. “We feel Goodyear offers customers products that help provide fleets and truck operators the cradle-to-grave tire solutions they want,” said Garry Heintschel, vice president and co-owner of Heintschel Tire. “That’s why we decided to make the move to Goodyear. We feel Goodyear is moving in the same direction that we need to go and at the speed in which we need to respond to our customers.

Pat Demianenko, national sales manager for Goodyear Retread Systems, said Goodyear is pleased to have Heintschel Tire as an authorized Goodyear retreader. “Heintschel Tire has a strong reputation among its customers and its peers as a leading tire retreader that’s committed to producing quality products and supporting them with great service,” Demianenko said.

USW Wants USTR Appearance

The United Steelworkers (USW) union wants make its case for restricting Chinese tyre imports and has requested an appearance before the US Trade Representative (USTR) public hearing scheduled 7 August. The USW advocates strong enforcement of a US trade law. Last month, a majority vote of the ITC reportedly found that “tariff relief was needed to urgently reduce tire imports,” say the steelworkers. However, trade associations including the TIA have questioned the effectiveness of such measures.

USW President Leo W. Gerard said: “Our nation’s job loss numbers at tyre factories dramatically understate the impact China’s flooding imports have caused in the communities where our represented workers live. The consequences of lost tyre production jobs have extended to many thousands of other jobs in supporting industries and suppliers that have also been lost.”

Michelin Names New Commercial Director

Bill Schafer, 42, has been appointed commercial director of Michelin’s truck and bus operations in the UK and Republic of Ireland. Schafer previously spent five years as vice president of Michelin’s North American agricultural division based in Greenville, South Carolina.

Schafer brings 16 years of experience within the Michelin Group and most recently held roles including three years as European key account manager for Michelin Fleet Solutions based at the company’s worldwide headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand, France, prior to which he was commercial irector of Michelin’s truck operations in Mexico and Central America.

Apollo Tyres to Supply 50% Nissan Truck South Africa OE Needs

Apollo Tyres South Africa recently won the contract to supply half of Nissan Diesel’s truck tyre requirements. Nissan Diesel SA (Pty) Ltd, based in Rosslyn Pretoria, have reportedly chosen Apollo Tyres South Africa (formerly known as Dunlop International) to supply the Dunlop brand steel radial truck tyres, in an “open-ended contract.”

The deal with Nissan Diesel is the single largest original equipment deal secured with a vehicle manufacturer since the reinstatement of Apollo Tyres South Africa’s Original Equipment department early last year. Dr Luis Ceneviz, Apollo Tyres South Africa’s CEO said: “We are proud to be collaborating with Nissan Diesel as both companies share a common goal of exceeding customer expectation and growing its share of business. We look forward to many more such partnerships into the future.”

Brityrex 2010 Embarks on ‘Major International Marketing Drive’

A major marketing campaign is underway to promote the next staging of Brityrex International, which will take place at Manchester Central 5 -7 October 2010. Show organisers ECI International report that early July saw the distribution of 10,000 information packs for the UK’s only dedicated tyre, accessory and workshop equipment trade exhibition. This activity will be supplemented by extensive UK and international tyre trade advertising, marketing, information and online campaigns over the next 12 months.

In addition to covering all sectors of the tyre industry, Brityrex 2010 will also place increased emphasis on workshop equipment, tools and services. Research suggests that tyre retailers and distributors have delayed or postponed making capital purchases during the recession, which is expected to create increased demand for new equipment as market conditions improve later next year.

Garden Using Dunweedin Scoops Prize

Landscape designers Rebecca Butterworth, Victoria Pustygina and Ludovica Ginanneschi clinched the coveted award for the Best Conceptual Garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show with an exhibit including Terrasofta rubber landscape shavings by Dunweedin’, made from 100 per cent recycled fork-lift truck tyres.

Birmingham Show to Host Tyre Munching Panther

In the past T&A has reported on a cheetah snacking on tyres in a Cambridgeshire backyard – see our November 2008 story for details of this surreal occurrence – and now we’ve caught wind of a panther heading in our direction. This particular creature also chomps readily upon the black rubber objects, yet there is no cause for concern….rather than being a zoo escapee, the panther in question is a boon for the tyre recycling industry.
