China Tyre Industry Targeting Complete Radialisation by 2015

On 12 October China’s Ministry of Industry announced a new policy for the local tyre industry aimed at promoting environmentally friendly and energy-efficient development but it looks likely to have a knock-on effect on global players as well. One of the key points of the policy is that it sets out radialisation targets for each of the main product sectors. By 2015 the passenger car segment is expected to reach 100 per cent radialisation, with a 90 per cent goal for heavy truck tyres and 85 per cent for light truck tyres.

Bridgestone Ends Dayton Truck Tyres

Tire Review reports that Bridgestone Americas' Dayton brand medium truck tyres are no more. The manufacturer announced yesterday that it would discontinue sales of Dayton brand medium truck radials as of 1 January, 2011. The tyre-maker said it anticipates it will burn off its remaining Dayton inventory by the end of this year, but did not say when it stopped production of the tyres. The move, Bridgestone Americas said, does not impact production and sales of its Dayton branded passenger and light truck/SUV lines.

Martin West to Head New Sailun Europe Operation

Qingdao, China-based tyre manufacturer Sailun Co., Ltd., has appointed Martin West as managing director of its new Sailun Tyres (Europe) subsidiary. West previously held a number of senior roles with Goodyear, Lassa and most recently Infinity. Tyres & Accessories understands that the new European team, which will be based in the UK, currently consists of two people including the recent appointment of a back office manager that brings with him logistics experience at Goodyear Dunlop. According to a statement released by Sailun Europe, the recent moves follow the firm’s decision to begin “strategically focussing to further develop their presence in the European market.”

Tyres Red Hot Topic at Upcoming SEMA/GTE Shows

SEMA says that tyres are a hot topic among those planning to attend the upcoming 2010 SEMA Show and Global Tire Expo, according to Tire Review. In all, more than 9,000 attendees are specifically interested in tyres and tyre-related products. Among that group, SEMA said, more than 3,000 attendees specifically identified themselves as “tyre buyers.” The 2010 SEMA Show and GTE will be held 2-5 November at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Toyo to Increase US Prices

In response to rising raw material costs, Toyo Tire USA is increasing prices for its passenger car, light truck and truck tyres by up to six per cent, with in line adjustments.

Hankook Raising Prices in US

Prices for Hankook Tire America’s passenger car, light truck and medium truck tyres will increase by up to 6.5 per cent on November 1, 2010. The company reports that rising energy, raw materials and transportation costs have necessitated this price adjustment.

Giti Tire Doubles MIRA Testing Operation

Giti Tire has doubled the size of its European test centre, based at the MIRA research facilities in Warwickshire by both expanding its garage space and staff numbers at the test track. The development, which comes not much more than two years after the company embarked on its European research and development programme there, reflects the company’s determination to significantly increase sales and further develop its products to compete with longer established brand names.

As a result of the investment Giti has made, the company’s operation is now amongst the largest tyre testing programmes operating at MIRA. Speaking to Tyres & Accessories during a recent truck tyre demonstration day, company representatives explained that this UK-based European testing operation is increasingly adopting the position of a global centre as it now tests products for the US and various other global markets as well as its European mainstay. In addition the test centre has reportedly played host to the engineers from the firm’s Indonesian and Chinese production bases. Furthermore, the experienced test team that has been established under the leadership of the company’s European Technical Centre head, Eddie Young, has also begun bi-annual winter tyre testing at respected centres in Finland and New Zealand.

Pirelli Raising US Car and Light Truck Tyre Prices

Prices for all Pirelli passenger car and light truck tyres sold in the United States will rise as of December 1, 2010. Increases of up to seven per cent will apply. Pirelli says the higher prices are being implemented due to increasing raw material costs.

Universal to Promote Radar Tyre Dealer Opportunities at Brityrex

Middlesex-based Universal Tyres & Spares Ltd (UTSL) have announced plans to exhibit the company’s Radar range of tyres at the UK’s only dedicated tyre show, Brityrex 2010, next week (5 – 7 October). UTSL are sharing a stand with Singapore-based Omni United Pte Ltd at the show in Manchester’s GMEX (now known as Manchester Central) exhibition centre.

JK Tyre: Into Europe with Self-Confidence

JK Tyre & Industries has been a pioneer of radialisation in the Indian tyre market for some 35 years now and the country’s third largest tyre manufacturer, with its “JK Tyre”, “Vikrant” and “Tornel” brands, is considered a technological leader. While investment in the development and production of radial passenger car tyres during the mid 1970s has paid off and radialisation within this sector of the Indian market has grown to 97 per cent, JK Tyre & Industries has now once again positioned itself on the cutting edge of radialisation by investing a sizable sum in the local truck tyre market. And although this investment will initially serve Indian customers, the manufacturer plans the parallel expansion of its export activity and is focusing on the European market, particularly the passenger car tyre segment. Vice chairman and managing director Dr. Raghupati Singhania explained the background to this in an exclusive interview with Tyres & Accessories.

2010 Bridgestone Environmental Report Published

Bridgestone Europe has released the latest edition of its environmental report. The document, titled ‘Environmental Commitment and Performance’, updates the 2009 version and adds content on the upcoming European tyre labelling legislation, Bridgestone’s new eco-oriented Ecopia tyre range and the company’s environment-related activities in the community.

European Launch for Bridgestone Ecopia Truck Range

In early September, Bridgestone released its latest European market Ecopia passenger car tyre. The introduction of this environment-oriented product has now been followed up with the European launch of an Ecopia truck tyre range. At the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany, Bridgestone Europe CEO Mac Ohashi formally announced the line-up’s debut in our region.

Port Says ‘No,’ Washington Tire Plant Plan on Hold

Commissioners at the Port of Ephrata in the US state of Washington have voted terminate negotiations with Washington Tire Corporations, which wanted to build a US$1 billion tyre manufacturing plant site there. The unanimous vote on September 20 to end talks came after WTC failed to respond to the Port’s request for proof of its status as a legitimate corporation in the state, and that its listed president Abraham Hengyucius had the legal authority to sign contracts.

Hankook to Produce Truck Tyres in Hungary

According to Hankook Tire Europe executive vice president and COO Jin-Wook Choi, the company holds the long-term goal of doubling its annual European production to more than 20 million units. In addition to this sizable increase in passenger car, 4×4 and van tyre production, the company has decided that in the long-term to add a truck tyre production line at its factory in the Hungarian town of Dunaújváros.

European OE Truck Tyre Market Swells, PCR Slips in August

Market data released by Michelin shows the European original equipment market for passenger car and light commercial vehicle tyres to have dropped 10.0 per cent year-on-year during August. Sales of these products have in the year to date increased 18.6 per cent in Europe, and our region was the only of the three reported markets to have suffered a decline; the North American OE market for passenger car and light truck tyres grew 34.0 per cent during August, while the China market increased 12.7 per cent. Both of these monthly results are lower than year to date growth figures, which for North America and China are 61.8 per cent and 40.5 per cent respectively.
