Cooper acquires 100% share in Kunshan JV operation

By mid-March Cooper Tire & Rubber should be the proud 100 per cent owner of Cooper Kenda Tire. Upon finalisation of the US$116.5 million transaction the former 50 per cent Cooper owned joint venture operation will be renamed Cooper Kunshan Tire (contingent to government approval) in recognition of the city in China where it is headquartered. According to Cooper Tire, the transaction should be completed by March 15 through a wholly-owned company subsidiary.

ATS Euromaster to distribute Primewell commercial vehicle tyres

ATS Euromaster is to supply the Giti Tire manufactured Primewell brand of truck. Primewell tyres are already sold in Asia, North America, South America and mainland Europe. Giti Tire is reportedly the fourth largest radial truck tyre manufacturer in the world.

Richard Lyons, Giti sales director – Europe, said: "We were looking for a large national company whose values reflected our own focus on quality, innovation and the environment, and ATS Euromaster ticked every box. Fleets of all sizes are using Primewell tyres around the world and have commented on the difference they are making to costs and performance levels. We have every faith that our partnership with ATS Euromaster will help us swiftly establish a similar reputation in the UK commercial vehicle sector."

Sky-high raw material costs put pressure on tyre suppliers

With relative shortages in supply and increased demand from the rapidly expanding emerging markets of the East pushing natural rubber and other raw material costs higher and higher, most tyre manufacturers are again raising their prices in response. Bridgestone Ecopia truck retreads and rolling resistance

At the launch at the IAA in September 2010 of Bridgestone’s latest range of truck tyres under the Ecopia brand, Europe CEO Mac Ohashi said a range of Ecopia retread patterns would follow for the M749 and R109 drive and trailer tyres. The former was released through the company’s European Bandag dealer network in January 2011 as a replacement for the Qualitread M749, while the company says the R109 Ecopia retread – a completely new product previously unavailable in the exiting Qualitread range – will follow later in the year. Tyres & Accessories spoke to Bridgestone Europe’s TBR/Retread Business Unit about the development of the Ecopia retread range and how it is presented to the market.

Pirelli increasing US tyre prices

Prices for Pirelli consumer products in the United States are to rise over the coming months. On March 1, 2011, the price of moto tyres will increase three per cent, while a five per cent increase for car and light truck tyres will be implemented on April 1. The tyre maker says increasing raw material costs, particularly natural rubber, are the reason behind this price hike.

Federal Tires’ prices to go up from 1 March

Federal Tires has announced that it is raising prices the prices of its passenger car and light truck tyres by up to 12 per cent with “in-line adjustments for all onward orders and remaining back orders.” According to a statement issued 14 February, the price increases take effect on 1 March 2011. The company said all customers will be included in the increase and the percentage increase will vary by product line and continents “contingent upon the overall market conditions.”

Yokohama to increase North American prices

Prices for Yokohama’s consumer segment tyres will increase by up to eight per cent as of March 1. Yokohama Tire Corporation says the price rise will include passenger car, high performance and light truck tyres and that other in-line adjustments will be announced at a later date.

After nine years of at the helm of Hankook Tyres UK Ltd, years that have seen the company grow from the position of a newcomer into a force to be reckoned, Richard Page has announced his retirement from the role of managing director. Tyres & Accessories understands that he will continue in a consultative role throughout what has been a pre-planned and progressive changeover into the capable hands of new MD Gang Seung Lee. Prices rises announced for Michelin’s European portfolio

Michelin has announced fresh price rises for European markets – part of its “firm pricing policy” in the face of rising raw material costs. As of March 1, motorcycle and scooter tyres will increase by up to 7.5 per cent, while prices for earthmover tyres will go up by up to 7.5 per cent on this date in most European markets. Between March 1 and April 1 price rises for new and retreaded truck tyres averaging seven per cent will be “gradually implemented” in European markets (excluding Russia), while agricultural tyres will receive the same gradual approach to price increases in many European markets between April 1 and May 1; this time prices will go up by an average of four per cent. Last but not least, the passenger car and small truck tyre segment will see increases averaging five per cent for summer and winter products gradually implemented between April 1 and June 1, 2011.

Kumho USA to raise prices on 1 March

Kumho Tire USA is raising its prices on some of its rannge by an as-yet undisclosed amount on 1 March. Kumho said increases will affect all passenger, light truck/SUV and medium truck tyres. The company concluded its statement by saying the exact details of the increase "will be provided to our clients in the near future.”

Toyo to raise passenger car and light truck tyre prices in Japan

From 1 April Toyo Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd will increase the price of tyres for passenger cars and light trucks sold in the Japanese domestic replacement market by an average of 7 per cent. Despite the fact the price hike takes effect on April fool’s day, the increase is not joke and applies to both Toyo’s summer and winter tyres. In fact the cost of some size of light truck tyres will rise sooner, with their Japanese domestic market price increase scheduled to take effect on 1 March 2011.

NDI reorganises UK operations, Mr Tyre to distribute Nordexx brand

NDI has announced plans for the reorganisation of its UK operation including taking on a new warehousing site. According to a statement released by the company, the UK subsidiary of Nordisk Daek Import A.S., ‘NDI Tyre & Tube Supplies Ltd’ is embarking on major changes to the way it conducts its UK based operations.

Current operation will be “fundamentally changed” in order to concentrate the focus of the business onto the supply of specialised and niche market products, thus “allowing the business to build on the reputation of being a market leader in the more diverse sectors of the industry.” One such change is that at the end of February NDI will cease operating daily deliveries to passenger car tyre customers as they have consciously withdrawn from this market sector based on an agreement to supply the Nordexx branded products exclusively through Mr Tyre limited of Birmingham.

ATS-E launches mobile “Carbon Cutter” service

ATS Euromaster has launched a pilot mobile service designed to help large truck fleets save on fuel costs and as a result reduce carbon emissions. The “Carbon Cutter” service uses technicians with purpose-built vans to visit customers’ sites across the UK to check, and if necessary adjust, the tyre pressures of every vehicle and trailer in the fleet. The technicians will also look for wheel alignment problems. They will also offer green valve caps as an indication of checked vehicles. Simon Tattersall, head of National Truck at ATS Euromaster, explains: “It’s no secret that correctly inflated and aligned tyres reduce rolling resistance on the road, yet in many cases we’re finding significant potential for fleets to further improve the accuracy of their pressures and alignment.
