TTS promotes roadside service, exhibits Firenza, Zeta truck tyre brands

West Midlands based Truck Tyre Solutions (TTS) returned to the CV Show 2013, having made its debut at the event last year. TTS said its main objective was to showcase its services in a fully responsive roadside service facility for truck tyres and promote the company's extensive range of quality commercial tyres covering all market sectors. It emphasised the Firenza range; Carl Falconer – sales director at TTS opined that it is a good mid-range tyre which offers a comprehensive size and pattern option for most trucks and trailers.

Magna investing in further warehouse space

The presence of Dutch off-road tyre company Magna Tyres Group at April’s Bauma 2013 show in Germany was appropriate, given the attention Magna has paid the country – and Europe as a region – over the last six months or so. Our German affiliate publication Neue Reifenzeitung was present at the show and spoke with Magna’s marketing and sales director, Berto Beulenkamp, who outlined the company’s latest activities.

Aeolus 'creating a name for itself' in UK CV tyre market

Chinese TBR manufacturer, Aeolus made its first appearance as an exhibitor at the CV Show at the 2013 edition. Appearing alongside its UK distributor Kings Road Tyres, the manufacturer says its presence resulted in product sales and strong visitor feedback. The fast-growing brand is trying to increase awareness in the UK, and amongst its range were two new patterns: the ASR69 and ADR69 truck tyres which are now available in popular sizes 295/80R22.5, 315/70R22.5 and 315/80R22.5.

Hankook exhibits new tyres at CV Show 2013

Hankook unveiled several new commercial tyres at the CV Show, including the bead to bead retread truck tyre the Alphatread. Additionally Hankook’s latest truck tyres, which aim to fill a gap it identifies between medium and long haul transportation, were displayed, while the brand raised interest in its stand through its sporting sponsorships. Tom May and Phil Dowson, players from Northampton Saints RFC visited the stand, while Hankook also ran a competition to win VIP tickets to football’s Europa League semi-final, a partnership that was announced at last year’s show.

Bridgestone shows newest truck tyres at CV Show

Bridgestone displayed its new R-Steer and R-Drive regional truck tyres, along with the latest addition to its fuel saving range, the Ecopia H-Trailer at the CV Show. The manufacturer states that its high profile presence at the show attracted scores of fleet managers and industry professionals following up interest after visiting its stand. It estimates that hundreds of people learned more about the brand and its portfolio of products at the NEC,

Kirkby increases Sailun exposure with CV Show stand

Kirkby Tyres’ Commercial Vehicle Show stand gave over a large proportion of its Hall Five space to displaying Sailun Tyres’ 16-strong range of TBR tyres. One of major UK distributors of truck, agricultural, plant and quad tyres, Kirkby are the sole distributor of Sailun truck tyres in the UK and Ireland. The distributor was pleased with the number of enquiries about the range, and went as far as to say that it was “our best ever.”

Conti aiding the fleet of foot

High levels of grip and traction are not just important in vehicle tyres, and to emphasise this Continental has shed some light onto an oft-overlooked part of its business. In addition to manufacturing commercial, consumer and off-road tyres, the German manufacturer has supplied rubber compounds to adidas for the past few years. These compounds are used to produce non-slip soles for more than 30 models of men and women’s running and trekking shoes. The tyre maker says the Continental sole has extremely effective non-slip qualities.

“We are delighted that the adidas running shoes with our rubber compound technology developed in Hanover are helping many professional athletes to achieve new personal best times and break course records,” comments David O’Donnell, head of R&D for passenger car and light truck tyres at Continental. “This shows the potential long-term benefits of looking beyond your immediate industry for new technology and solutions. During the development of our premium products, which stand out primarily due to exceptionally good grip in the wet, we even looked at gripping mechanisms from the animal kingdom – cats and polar bears in particular – and also focused on the production of rubber from dandelion plants.”

Comment: Stage fright

Whether the occasion is a corporate presentation or a theatre production, the moment immediately before you set foot on stage is probably the most nerve wracking. With a triple dip recession narrowly avoided and some first quarter results suggesting that the worst of the downturn is behind us, this is probably a good analogy for where the tyre market at large finds itself as the first half of 2013 draws to a close. One the one hand manufacturer supplied unit volumes, such as the first quarter figures supplied by the ETRMA, don’t exactly make easy reading and there is talk of restructuring. But on the other hand the worst could be over.

Flexibility, affordability promised by latest Forward Lift range

US-based automotive lifting equipment manufacturer Forward Lift has expanded its heavy-duty product offering, and for the first time is offering battery-operated mobile column lifts. The new FCH family of mobile column lifts offers 18,000 pounds (8,150kg) of capacity per column in a package it describes as affordable and perfect for independent repair facilities.

Bridgestone sales up 9% in Q1

In a quarter punctuated by recovering domestic and US markets, a stagnant and unstable European economy, and slowing economic expansion in Asia, Bridgestone Corporation posted net sales of ¥794.5 billion (£5.2 billion) in the three months from 1 January to 31 March, a year-on-year increase of nine per cent. Operating income amounted to ¥74.4 billion (£483.6 million), 18 per cent higher than in the first quarter of 2012, while operating margin rose 0.7 per cent year-on-year to 9.4 per cent. Ordinary income was up 14 per cent to ¥70.1 billion (£455.6 million), and net income rose two per cent to ¥43.1 billion (£280.1 million).

Nokian 1Q sales down 13%, operating profit down 20%

Despite significant drops in first quarter sales and profitability, Nokian used the publication of its latest financial results as an opportunity to rebuff negativity relating to its exposure to the Russian market. In the first quarter of 2013 Nokian Tyres Group’s net sales decreased by 13.3 per cent to 333.1 million euros (1Q 2012: 384.3 million euros). Operating profit fell even more sharply, dropping 27 per cent to 76.3 million (1Q 2012: 105 million euros).

The tyre manufacturer blamed historically low levels of tyre demand in Europe, but also presented the case that demand for replacement car tyres in 2013 will be on previous year’s level in Nordic countries even if it does remain weak in Europe.

Hankook introduces all-season truck range

If the weather in Europe is anything it is fickle, and the last couple of years have thrown several extremes our way. Hankook recognises that all-season tyres may be very much at home in our unpredictable conditions and has introduced an entirely new range of medium to long haul truck tyres for all-season purposes. The range is called Smartflex and consists of each three main sizes for steer and drive axle tyres. Hankook says the M+S marked tyres are designed to handle increased load capacities and to provide driving safety under changing weather conditions.

Multi-brand a focus for new VDB truck business

Shortly before Tyres & Accessories visited Van den Ban in late March, the Netherlands-based wholesaler announced plans to enter the truck tyre market. A truck specialist, Hans Bakker, has been appointed to assist Van den Ban in growing this business; Bakker, along with commercial manager Cyril Versteeg, discussed the wholesaler’s plans in relation to truck tyres.

Heuver focusing on customer relationships, introducing new products in 2013

Less then five decades after starting out as a one-man tyre business in western Holland, Heuver Tyrewholesale has grown into a major commercial segment wholesaler. Today the company is headquartered in Hardenberg, near the Dutch border with Germany, and specialises in supplying truck, OTR and agricultural tyres to customers throughout Europe. Tyres and Accessories recently spoke with director Bertus Heuver about Heuver Tyrewholesale’s current activities and focus; he shared that during 2013 the wholesaler is introducing an entirely new brand and intends to grow in at least two key regions.

Michelin Q1 sales down 8.1%

Summing up its first quarter 2013 experience in a single sentence, Michelin states that in the three months to 31 March the “market environment was weak in Europe in passenger car and light truck tyres, disappointing in North America and expanding in the new markets.”
