DAF trucks first to get Goodyear Kmax and Fuelmax tyres as standard

DAF has become the first truck manufacturer to offer Goodyear Kmax and Fuelmax tyres as standard original equipment. The new tyres will be supplied on the company’s brand new CF and LF models as well as its flagship XF range as of December 2013. The Goodyear Kmax and Fuelmax ranges were introduced in September. Kmax, as the name implies, has been developed for high mileage performance, while not compromising on other important criteria such as fuel efficiency and traction. Likewise the Goodyear Fuelmax range is for the operator who wants optimised fuel efficiency combined with good mileage.

Groundbreaking for Toyo expansion in US

Toyo Tire North America Manufacturing, Inc. (TNA) has broken ground on a 700,000 square foot (65,000m²) addition to its 2 million square foot (186,000 m²) tyre manufacturing facility in White, Georgia. The plant’s warehousing capacity will also be expanded by 323,000 square feet (30,000m²); Toyo says it needs a larger warehouse area to accommodate increasing demand for Toyo and Nitto brand passenger car and light truck tyres. Parent company Toyo Tire & Rubber is investing US$371 million in the TNA expansion over the next four years.

Toyo US bolsters TBR casing warranty

Purchasers of Toyo truck and bus tyres in the US will now enjoy a more comprehensive casing warranty. Toyo Tire U.S.A. Corp. says its improved casing warranty for its medium TBR range sees the casing value increasing to US$110 for the first retread on many popular sizes. The company also offers a rubber allowance of up to $50.00, based on the tyre’s remaining tread depth. Toyo Tire U.S.A. opines that these latest changes to its casing warranty make it one of the best in the tyre business.

Apollo, Sumitomo close African deal

The sale of Apollo Tyres South Africa (ATSA) to Sumitomo Rubber Industries has been closed, report Sumitomo and Apollo Tyres. In exchange for US$60 million, the Japanese firm now holds the rights to the Dunlop tyre brand in a further 30 African and two Indian Ocean region countries. Also included in the deal is the 9,600 tyre per day Ladysmith PCR factory that Apollo acquired as part of its Dunlop South Africa purchase in 2006, the ATSA distribution and sales network, and the ATSA distribution, sales and head office teams. Apollo retains the 2006-acquired Durban factory, which manufactures TBR and off-road tyres.

Marangoni Meccanica ‘Black Dragon’ behind 2013 mould cure growth

TRM, the Marangoni Meccanica division dedicated to the sale and development of retreading machinery, is reporting that its premium “Black Dragon” tyre building machines have pushed the envelope in terms of technology and helped inspire growth in mould cure retreading in general as well. The Black Dragon, purportedly the best machine of its kind available in the market for bead to bead application, is available in two versions: the Black Dragon 90, featuring a rotating twin turret serving a 90mm extruder for tread application and a vertical extruder for sidewall application, and the bigger version Black Dragon 120 (formerly known as Alpha Twin Dual Black Swan), featuring a 120mm extruder for the tread and two sidewall extruders.

Lanxess: “Green Tyres” save truck drivers save truck drivers 8.5 per cent on fuel

Tyre compound supplier Lanxess reports that “green Tyres” can reduce fuel consumption of trucks by 8.5 per cent following a road test on truck tyres. Working in partnership with chemical logistics provider Talke, with results the results independently verified by TÜV Rheinland, Lanxess found a fleet of 300 trucks would save £1.3 million a year in fuel costs by using so-called “green tyres”, making rolling resistance a key criterion for carriers when purchasing tyres.

Techking launching 11R22.5 Super DM

Chinese tyre firm Techking has announced it is released an 11R22.5 Super DM tyre designed for mixed road service. According to the company, the groove width has been increased and as a result stones will be much more easily pushed out. Furthermore, broader tread and thicker under-groove rubber have been added in order to ensure the “good performance on rough terrain” as well as prolonging mileage.

Birds joins the Bandvulc flock

Birds Transport and Logistics, including its recently acquired depot in Heywood, has signed a new tyre supply and management agreement with BTC, the management arm of the Bandvulc Group of companies. Birds, themselves part of Ballyvesey Holdings, are a full load and groupage company with extensive operations in the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe.

Snap, post, tag and win – Michelin launches truck-oriented contest

To showcase the launch of its new X Multi D tyre, Michelin has introduced an Instagram-based contest aimed at the trucking community. Called ‘Deliver Everywhere’, the contest invites truck drivers and others to showcase their brands in “some of the unusual, out-of the-way places in which they operate.” Truckers based in the UK and 13 other European countries are eligible to participate.

Bandag launches new urban drive tread

Bridgestone Europe has introduced a new Bandag tread intended for urban applications such as city buses and waste collection vehicles. Called the BDU2, the tread will be available in various widths, allowing for retreading of the most common casing sizes used within this segment.

Nokian launches CT BAS trailer tyre

Nokian Heavy Tyres says it has met user demand with its new Nokian CT BAS tyre for heavy trailers. Noting the challenges posed by construction site use, a surface typically featuring sharp rocks, nails and pieces of steel lying about, it says the CT BAS brings the tyre maker’s top-end puncture resistance technology, first developed for forestry applications, to construction sites. Furthermore, the BAS technology developed by Nokian Heavy Tyres enables the use of higher pressure levels.

Bridgestone Q3 results – sales and profit up

In its consolidated financial statements for the first three quarters of the 2013 fiscal year, Bridgestone Corporation reports net sales of ¥2,606.0 billion (£16.4 billion) between January and September, a 17 per cent increase from the first three quarters of 2012. Net sales in the third quarter alone were ¥900.8 billion (£5.7 billion). Operating income amounted to ¥318.9 billion (£2.0 billion) for the first nine months of the year, a year-on-year increase of 56 per cent, and ¥126.5 billion (£797.9 million) in the third quarter.

Conti releases Q3 results, lifts EBIT target

Consolidated sales at Germany’s Continental AG reached €8.35 billion in the three months to 30 September, a 2.65 per cent increase on the same period of 2012. Adjusted sales were up 2.44 per cent to €8.31 billion. EBITDA rose 10.36 per cent year-on-year in the quarter to €1.32 billion (15.8 per cent of sales, up from 14.7 per cent) and EBIT grew 15.58 per cent to €886.3 million (10.6 per cent of sales, up from 9.4 per cent).

Four metre height restriction would damage trade between UK and Ireland, warn associations

A group of leading trade associations from the UK and Ireland have written to the European Parliament’s Transport Committee asking it not to damage highly efficient trade flows between the two countries by imposing unnecessary and unwelcome height restrictions on goods vehicles. The letter, alerting the Committee to the real threat posed to trade by a report which was presented to it today (5 November), received strong support from key members of the Transport Committee and from the European Commission.
