ATSE Appoints New Head of National Accounts

National tyre specialist ATS Euromaster has appointed Steve Bury, 45, to the new position of Head of National Accounts, reporting directly to Peter Fairlie, Group Sales Director. This new role sees Bury head up both the National Car and National Truck sales teams, which are responsible for growing ATS Euromaster’s market share amongst the major leasing companies in the UK and large national fleets with multi-site operations.

Steve Bury joins ATS Euromaster from Unipart Automotive, where he held the position of Sales and Operations Director for two and a half years, prior to which he was National Sales Manager at Autoglass for five years.

Michelin Figures Reveal Varying Fortunes

Michelin reports healthy OE sales of radial truck tyres throughout Europe in May and for the 2008 year to date. Sales for the month were 11.2 per cent greater than those of a year earlier. Sales were significantly weaker in the replacement market, were a decline of 12.5 per cent on May 2007 was reported, and in both the OE and replacement segments of the European market. During the month unit sales for these dropped 4.9 and 4.3 per cent respectively. Sales of OE passenger car tyres for the period between January and the end of May, contrary to the month’s figures, were up 3.1 per cent, while the replacement sales dropped 1.9 per cent. Truck tyre OE sales increased 14.3 per cent in Europe between January and May, while sales in the replacement market was down 4.6 per cent on the five-month period of 2007.

Market Growth Stymied, Says RMA

(Akron/Tire Review) The RMA says it expects 2007 tyre shipments to “decrease slightly” due to continued weakening in the OE market. In its revised forecast, the RMA says the replacement market is up slightly, but not enough to offset decreased OE demand. The RMA now sees replacement market shipments up almost 2 per cent, but OE markets will be down about 8 per cent overall.

Segment by segment, the RMA sees:

• OE Passenger Tyres: Decrease by approximately 4.5 per cent in 2007 to 46.0 million units from 48.2 million units in 2006, due to decreases in domestic light vehicle sales and production.

• OE Light Truck Tyres: Decrease of approximately 12 per cent or 600,000 units from 2006 levels, due to more light trucks being fitted with P-metric tyres rather than LT-metric units.

• OE Medium/Wide-Base/Heavy Truck Tyres: Due to reduced new truck sales, the forecast has been revised downward to a 29 per cent decrease for 2007, or nearly 4.8 million units in total, or approximately 2 million units less then the 6.8 million units shipped in 2006.

Strong Truck Tyre Demand Means Short Supply in Europe

Truck manufacturers (Volvo and MAN) are reporting that supplies of truck tyres are running thin. This suggestion was confirmed, according to Deutsche Bank analysts report, following conversations with Michelin and Continental. The reason for the short supply is much stronger than anticipated demand, with OE and replacement sales up 12 per cent and 10 per cent respectively across Europe in the first four months of the year. The analysts characterise this as “good news for Continental since European truck sales represent approximately 7 per cent of group’ sales. It is said to be an especially good development for Michelin as European truck sales represent 18 per cent of group sales.

RMA: US Tyre Shipments to Decrease

(Akron/Tire Review) US tyre shipments this year are expected to decrease by 2.8 per cent compared to 2005, reflecting an overall slowdown in the US economy, according to the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA). While GDP growth was 5.6 per cent in the first quarter, second-quarter growth slowed substantially to 2.5 per cent, said the RMA. “Slower growth and higher energy costs appear to be forcing consumers to prioritise spending including postponing tyre replacement,” the organization said.

Bridgestone Profits up 58 per cent

Bridgestone Corp’s full-year 2005 figures show that the company’s net profit surged 58 per cent last year to 180.7 billion yen (£877 million, 1.283 billion euros). In the 12 months ended 31 December annual sales rose 11 per cent to 2.69 trillion yen (£13.072 billion, 19.123 billion euros). The majority of the corporation’s turnover came from its tyre business, which contributed 2.156 trillion yen (£10.474 billion, 15.311 billion euros) a 12 per cent increase on the 1.931 trillion it generated in 2004.

Hayes Lemmerz 3Q Sales Up 11 per cent

Hayes Lemmerz International, Inc today reported that sales for the fiscal third quarter ended 31 October 2005, rose 11 per cent to $604.0 million from $545.9 million for the same period last year. However Hayes Lemmerz reported net losses of $13.3 million, compared with $5.3 million in the same period last year, and issued revised guidance for 2005.

Truck Sales on Target

Commercial vehicle registrations are “on track,” according to SMMT statistics that have recorded 394,738 registrations for the rolling year to September. Last month’s figures were slightly down at 0.6 per cent, but the year to date is up by 1.6 per cent.

Bridgestone UK Adds To Sales Team

Bridgestone UK has appointed Tim Dougherty as Trade Sales Manager (North). He has spent his career in the tyre industry, working for a truck rental company and spending eight years as Bridgestone’s area sales manager in the Midlands.

Reporting to head of truck sales Julie Plumb, Mr. Dougherty will manage a team of five salesmen and will be responsible for all Bridgestone’s truck and bus tyre sales in the northern half of the UK.

Bridgestone UK Sales Team Appointment

Bridgestone UK has added to its truck tyre sales team with the appointment of Paul Emery as Trade Sales Manager (South). He replaces Terry Slater, who has become Bridgestone’s new retread business development manager.

In his new position, Mr Emery will manage a team of five salesmen and will be responsible for all Bridgestone’s truck and bus tyre sales in the southern half of the UK. He will report to head of truck sales, Julie Plumb.

Big Three Regaining Ground in Canada

(Toronto/Tire Review) Canadian Press reports that the Big Three automakers – Ford, GM and DaimlerChrysler – continue to lose market share in the United States but are regaining ground in Canada. US sales by the Big Three have declined by six per cent so far this year, reducing their market share to 59 per cent – the fifth consecutive month below 60 per cent – said the report released Monday, citing research by Scotiabank.

Meanwhile, the Big Three led the way in Canada last month, with volumes advancing 16 per cent year-over-year – the best performance in more than five years.

Michelin Man to Drive Truck Sales at ATS Euromaster

ATS Euromaster has a new face leading its commercial vehicle sales operation, Phil Payne, who has joined the team from Michelin will now become the company’s national sales director truck.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Payne said: “I’m joining a business that is seeking to grow by building on the customer relationships it has already developed in the CV, agricultural and industrial markets. There is a new, extremely positive business philosophy evolving at ATS Euromaster and I look forward to helping drive this forward by delivering new levels of service and value to CV operators of all sizes.”

Mr Payne originally began his career with the Mars Group, but more recently moved to Michelin to perform the role of European car fleet manager.

The new appointment is the third senior management selection to be made by the company this year, the other two being Martin Saint, national sales director car and Robert Blaikie, divisional sales director. All three appointments are further steps in the company’s strategy to develop its products and services across the UK tyre and vehicle maintenance market.

Goodyear steer tyre praised

Goodyear’s most high-tech truck tyre ever has received recognition that labels it as “terrific” and “one of the best product introductions of 2003,” according to Truck Sales & Leasing publication. The Goodyear G395 LHS steer-axle tyre for long-haul applications was honoured as one of “Terrific 20” of 2003 by the magazine. Winning products are chosen for their innovation, serviceability and performance, according to the magazine. Dave Beasley, Goodyear’s director of sales, commercial tyres said, “We are honoured to have this new tyre recognized as one of the best products in the trucking business. The tyre was designed to be a product that its users could rely on, mile after mile.”

Truck Sales Head Down

North American Truck sales have plummeted, down by as much as 50 per cent since the 1999 peak. There are signs that the downturn may spread to Europe. European truck manufacturers expect sales to fall by 15-20 per cent in 2002. Volvo has declared US deliveries of trucks down 40 per cent and a 21 per cent decline in Europe. Daf also expect to see the European market fall by 20-25 per cent this year.
