Cooper Tire has launched a new product for small and medium sized family cars, which it claims boasts a reduction in road noise and a longer lifespan than its predecessor. The company states that it has used the latest pitch sequencing technology to create the Cooper CS2, a step to reduce the tyre’s noise levels and provide the quiet running required by the latest EU legislation (otherwise known as s-marking).
Marangoni is promoting the green benefits of its Marix ecology range of retreaded clean oil 4×4 tyres, with the launch of the new Panther four-season studdable tyre, bringing the total number of lines in the range to nine.
According to company representatives, “mobility off the road and protection of the environment are aspects that are seemingly – yet only seemingly – incompatible.” As a result the Marix Panther features the combination of a studrable tread, zero (aromatic) oil compound, non-directional tread pattern with “very low noise and good driving comfort” and Q, S and T speed ratings (approved for up to 160, 180 and 190 km/h respectively).
Techking reports an upcoming UHP addition to its Effiplus range of passenger car tyres. Called ‘Himmer II’, the new tyre will employ a full silica compound in order to deliver lower rolling resistance. Techking states the Himmer II’s asymmetrical tread pattern improves wet and dry grip, while the tyre’s shoulder area tread is designed in a way that controls the circulation of air between the tread blocks, thereby reducing noise.
In April, Goodyear is launching the first size in its new “RM” range of haulage tyres for off-the-road applications – a product line-up that will ultimately include two 63-inch fitments. The RM name stands for “rock mining”, and with this in mind an extra deep tread has been utilised in order to provide extend tread life in harsh operating conditions. Furthermore, says Goodyear, the presence of interlocking stability blading is intended to promote a solid footprint, and high angle grooves promote traction and cleaning.
Despite the absence of some international visitors due to European flight restrictions, the Bauma 2010 show in Munich, Germany got underway on April 19. The specialist off-road and mining equipment exhibition has attracted a number of exhibitors from the tyre sector, including Bridgestone Europe, who has introduced a number of new sizes to its off-road ranges at Bauma.
Results from 15 European countries where Bridgestone’s “Think Before You Drive” campaign was conducted last year show 81 per cent of motorists to be driving on under-inflated tyres. The tyre maker drew this conclusion after conducting tyre safety checks on some 52,400 vehicles in the UK and on the Continent, and notes that this inattention to correct tyre pressure wastes the annual equivalent of four billion litres of fuel and adds 9.3 million tons of unnecessary CO2 emissions to the air we breathe.
Titan Tire Corporation has introduced the Ultimate tyre – this is the name given to its new range of skid tyres, products the US based manufacturer says have been designed to provide extra long life with up to twice the tread depth of conventional skid steer tyres.
Between April 19 and 25 the German city of Munich will host Bauma 2010 – the world’s largest trade fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines, construction vehicles and construction equipment. Tyre safety body TyreSafe has advised motorcyclists to check the condition of their tyres in order to remain safe. The statements, which were issued separately but both coincide with April’s bike tyre safety month warn of safety issues such as the fact that some bikes can encounter rubber deterioration which can make the tyres unsafe or illegal after a long winter in storage.
“As the only point of contact with the road it’s critical that motorcyclists check that their tyres are in a healthy state before setting off on a ride,” explained Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe. “At the start of spring this becomes even more important as bikes can sometimes spend several months in storage over the winter. During this time their tyres can suffer from cracking and other forms of deterioration which can impact on the safety of the rider. By giving the tyres a thorough inspection, these problems can be minimised and riders can enjoy a safe return to their bikes.”
Toyo Tire Europe has announced the Spring 2010 European launch for two of the company’s tyre ranges. The Proxes C1S and Proxes T1 Sport are both scheduled for release in this region, thereby strengthening Toyo’s high performance offering here. The Proxes C1S is described as a UHP comfort tyre designed for powerful executive cars. Toyo states that the Proxes C1S blends a refined, quiet ride with outstanding high speed manoeuvrability plus reduced rolling resistance.
Alliance Tire has released a pair of new products into its agricultural range. The company is already well-known for its flotation tyres, including the 380 series. Alliance also produces the 380 Heavy Duty, a tyre it says incorporates the existing tyre’s known characteristics, including a fabric casing reinforced by steel belts, yet modified to make it suitable for the heaviest of applications, such as slurry tankers and dump trailers for soil and sand transport. Inflation pressure has been raised to 5 bar and load capacities increased. The casing has been strengthened by additional ply and tyre stiffness increased both radially and laterally. Furthermore, the 380 Heavy Duty’s bead bundle has been designed in accordance to new higher load and inflation pressure.
Techking Tires reports that its latest generation truck tyres, scheduled for an April 2010 launch, will feature all-new design, features and performance. These features include, Techking reports, 15 degree ETL (Enhanced Tread Life) design, Techking ‘Force’ pattern design and a computer optimised shoulder design. These features, it adds, increase mileage and durability. Furthermore, heat release efficiency has particularly been taken into account in the new generation tyres.
On April 1, new regulations covering the use of winter tyres will take effect in New Zealand. The new requirements included in the Land Transport: Tyres and Wheels Amendment Rule prohibit the mixing of winter tyres with other types of tyres on the same vehicle. This ban applies to passenger cars, 4x4s, vans, small buses and light commercial vehicles.
North American agricultural machinery operators can now take advantage of a new Goodyear Farm Tires range specifically designed for high clearance, self-propelled sprayers. Known as the ‘Ultra Sprayer’, the tyre features tread bars engineered to carry heavy sprayer loads and a wider lug to promote longer wear characteristics as compared to conventional tractor tyres. These design features, says Goodyear Farm Tires parent company Titan Tire, also provide more stability and a better ride when travelling from field-to-field at road speeds up to 30 mph. A significant increase in lug surface area helps improve lug wear, Titan adds, while increases in lug bracing and surface area combine to deliver improved durability, even under heavier loads. This design is also said to offer superior traction in the field.
On March 24, a Malvern man was sentenced to a total of 12 months imprisonment for illegally depositing and storing used tyres at his workplace and home. Mark Alexanda Smith, aged 43, pleaded guilty at Worcester Crown Court on 13 January 2010 to three charges relating to the illegal deposit and keeping of controlled waste. The charges were brought by the Environment Agency under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Mr Smith was sentenced to four months imprisonment for each of the three offences, with the sentences to run consecutively.
