The NTDA has now issued more than 9000 REACT licences to commercial tyre technicians assessed as competent to work safely at the roadside across the UK. The need for such a system is clear. Prior to the introduction of REACT in 2011, some technicians were seriously injured and others killed while working at the roadside.
Point S Tyre & Autocare was recently recognised as an IMI approved centre. According to the independent retail network, the achievement is “a significant step towards Point S’ goal of becoming the largest qualified and certified European network for electric vehicle maintenance by 2026.”

Funding is available through the UK government’s apprenticeship levy scheme, yet the latest data in the IMI’s Automotive Education Report suggests this is underutilised in the automotive sector, meaning many businesses are missing out. Elsewhere, leading garage chains have been sounding the alarm that their growth and profitability depend on getting more personnel.
The latest automotive training centre to be named as a TechSafe Centre of Excellence by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is Lincoln College, which has just opened a brand-new automotive workshop and Apprentice Centre. The first Further Education College in the UK to offer specific qualifications for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Lincoln College also trains teaching staff and trainers from institutions and businesses around the country.
BorgWarner brand Delphi Technologies has launched its new Masters of Motion hub aimed at independent garage technicians. The company said the launch heralds a “sustained campaign to support technicians and workshops even more closely.” The availability of qualified technicians adequately prepared for the rapid changes in the car parc, including the rise of electric vehicles and increasingly complex advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), is one of the key challenges currently facing the automotive aftermarket.
Ring Automotive has partnered with TMD Friction UK to support with the training of technicians at the braking specialist’s new state-of-the-art facility. Personnel attending the research and development facility in Seaton Ross, East Yorkshire, will be equipped with Ring’s market leading MAGflex inspection lamps and high-performance lithium jump starters and battery analysers.
In November, Repairify’s US office, Repairify Inc, introduced plans to launch the Repairify Institute, a comprehensive technical training program for automotive professionals designed to ensure service readiness, in 2023.
