Two NETE Depots Gain Pirelli Accreditation

Two North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts depots have been accredited by Pirelli Tyres in an industry wide audit. Both the company’s York and Middlesbrough depots were named as one of just a few Pirelli Performance Centres across the UK. According to those involved the outlets underwent stringent judging to land the title and pipped competitors to the post to win. Ray Darcy, part of the senior management team for North Eastern Tyre and Exhausts, said:

“Pirelli really put us through our paces to win this title and I would like to say a huge well done to the team at the York and Middlesbrough depots. This badge is not easily earned as it stands for an unrivalled level of expertise when it comes to recommending, fitting and balancing high performance tyres. The level of customer care and attention that accompanies the service also have to be first class. Now we have won the status, we still cannot rest on our laurels – rigorous ongoing training and examination continues to take place to ensure that we are maintaining the exacting level of service Pirelli customers expect world wide.”

Bike Tyrestore Wins British Dealer News Award

Bike Tyrestore (BTS) has won the “Best Trade Service” award during the British Dealer News Industry Awards ceremony, following day one of the 2008 Motorcycle Trade Expo Show. Presented by industry personality Peter Gleave, the trophy was presented to Bike Tyrestore’s Managing Director, Peter Smith. The award follows a survey of motorbike tyre dealers (conducted by British Dealer News) that resulted in BTS being described as the best trade service. During the presentation citation BTS was described as being “recognised not just for its excellent service but for the breadth of its service.” The citation continued: “Next day delivery and competitive pricing is normal these days, but this company goes the extra mile with a free phone order service, free technical training for dealers’ staff, a weekly trade newsletter and customer invitations to their highly popular track days.”

Tyre Specialist Becomes Sheep Midwife

When Goodyear Dunlop UK off-the-road tyre specialist, Brian Eastman, visited a farm in Shurford he ended up using a more “hands-on” approach than he bargained for. In January Eastman was visiting Richard Parris at Cutliffe Farm when farmer Parris received a call informing him that one of his sheep was in a bit of bother during labour. He leaped to the rescue, taking an intrigued Brian Eastman with him, whereupon they found the sheep was struggling with a lamb in a breach position. Parris took control, whil Goodyear’s Eastman held the sheep in place and kept it calm. “It was an interesting night at the farm and certainly a first for me! Mother and baby are doing well!” Brian Eastman told T&A. Perhaps his example will lead to animal midwifery being added to OTR tyre training!

PCL-Sumo Appoints New CEO

PCL’s Indian joint venture (PCL-Sumo) has announced the appointment of Uday Bhaskar as its new Chief Executive Officer. He will lead the company’s Mumbai-based team providing sales and support service for PCL’s tyre inflation and pneumatic products on the Indian marketplace. The alliance of PCL and Sumo Hi-Tech Marketing Pvt Ltd. has allowed Indian customers instant local access to a vast resource of experience, products, local training and international support, all delivered with an in-depth knowledge of the Indian market.

TIA Sets Plan for Commercial Tyre Event

TIA has outlined its agenda for the upcoming Commercial Tire, Retread & Recycling Conference, which will be held in conjunction with ATA’s TMC Show in Orlando. TIA’s program will run February 5-7. The event opens on Tuesday, February 5 with the TMC Exhibition & Reception at the Orange County Convention Center from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

TIA’s program continues on Wednesday, February 6 with the TMC trade show from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by the opening session from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. featuring speeches by Tavio Headley of ATA who will look at the economy, and Don Shea, president of the RMA, who will provide an outlook for the tyre industry. This session and following seminars will be held at the Rosen Centre Hotel, adjacent to the convention centre.

Solus Masterlease Agreement For Kwik-Fit Fleet

Effective 1st January, Kwik-Fit Fleet has won a solus multi-million pound contract to supply a range of fast-fit services, including tyre repair, replacement and management, to Masterlease. The previous fast-fit agreement was with a number of suppliers, including Kwik-Fit Fleet.

Masterlease is one of the UK’s largest leasing and fleet management specialists with more than 100,000 cars and vans on its books and the company will benefit from Kwik-Fit Fleet’s new web-based ‘intelligent’ tyre management authorisation and reporting system, which is being rolled out to Britain’s biggest fleet operators.

Bridgestone Names 17 Excellence Centres

Bridgestone UK has unveiled 17 Centres of Excellence as part of a new reward scheme for its national First Stop network of independent tyre dealerships. The First Stop Quality Program replaces the Stars initiative. Instead of being rated as three, four or five star outlets, businesses can now qualify as Accredited Centres or Centres of Excellence. The Program covers areas such as depot appearance, staff training, telephone technique and public relations, with the top performing outlets eligible for new First Stop signage, certificates, a crystal trophy and shopping vouchers. The 2008 Quality Program is scheduled to get underway in March.

New Pirelli Deal to Benefit Romanian UHP Tyre Plant Town

It is nine months since Pirelli opened its UHP tyre manufacturing facility in the Romanian town of Slatina, and the Italian company’s commitment to the community has been reflected in a program of social initiatives. The latest of these is the signing of an agreement on December 10 between the tyremaker and Niguarda Cà Granda Hospital of Milan and the Hospital of Slatina to provide for the continuing education of Romanian medical and nursing personnel at the Milan hospital. In addition, Pirelli will donate modern hospital equipment to the Slatina hospital for diagnostics and emergency surgery.

Hankook: Stopped Subsidy Reports False

Hankook has flatly denied reports that the Hungarian government has stopped an $820,000 training subsidy, characterizing them as “misinformation.” One company spokesperson told Tyres & Accessories that, while Hankook was perfectly entitled to claim such a subsidy, the Korean manufacturer hadn’t in fact applied for one. Therefore Hankook maintains that the Associated Press’ earlier report that the Hungarian government had stopped an $820,000 training subsidy payment to Hankook Tire Co. due to violations of the country’s labour laws is totally false.

Speaking to Nigeria’s Vanguard, Ambassador John Fashanu, managing director/chief executive officer of Tyre Protector Nigeria Ltd said his inspiration to enter this business as a way of giving back to the African people following the blowout related death of a friend, a former speaker in Niger State House of Assembly.

Two years after entering the business Fashanu reports that 85 per cent of road accidents in Nigeria are from punctured tyres. If nothing else, this clearly shows that there is a market for his non-toxic, glycol based, water soluble tyre sealant. The product is designed for use on tubeless tyres and operates in a similar way to most sealants – it forms a thin protective coating between the tyre and the air within the tyre. When a puncturing object penetrates the tyre, air pressure forces the sealant into the “wound” repairing the damage instantly.

Rema Tip Top has launched www.tip-top.co.uk, a new website that the company says includes an array of new features and useful information. The site has been significantly modified, providing access to a new online product finder facility showing detailed product and ordering information.

The site also offers account holders the ability to create orders online using the new B2B function. “We believe that this is now one of the most comprehensive online buying hubs in the tyre trade, and now it’s even easier to browse, select and buy the items that you are looking for. Like most online shops this facility works on the ‘shopping basket’ principle. You tour the site and click when you see something you want,” company representatives told Tyres & Accessories, explaining that the B2B facility is currently set up for Rema Tip Top UK Limited account customers only.

Cooper Appoints Quality VP

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company has appointed Carl R. Montalbine to the newly created position of vice president of Global Quality and Operational Excellence, reporting directly to Cooper President and CEO Roy V. Armes.
“One of Cooper’s competitive advantages is its continuing emphasis on quality,” Armes said. “Carl’s background and experience in the areas of six sigma, lean strategy deployment, black belt and green belt training and other focus areas of operational excellence will help us continue manufacturing tires that exceed customers’ expectations.”

Hankook Staff Farewell Transaid Charity Cyclist

Staff from Hankook Tyre UK’s premises in Daventry were on hand to give charity cyclist Gary Williams a big send off as he heads to Kenya for a 400km charity cycle ride. Williams is making the trip to raise money for Transaid – a charity committed to making transport systems more affordable, available and efficient in developing countries, and the 55 year old joins a number of cyclists from the UK for the journey, including Radio 2’s Sally ‘traffic’ Boazman. The charity ride gets underway in Nairobi on Saturday November 10 before heading through Rift Valley to Kisumu in an event set to raise thousands of pounds for the charity.

Autodiagnos Releases new Diagnostic Oscilloscope

Autodiagnos, manufacturers of professional diagnostic equipment, namely the Multi Tester Pro, have added a four channel automotive oscilloscope to their product portfolio. The four channel AutoScope from Autodiagnos has an autometers function that provides dedicated presets for injector, O2 Sensor, MAP/MAF Analogue, MAP/MAF Digital and TPS signals and allows the user to browse the integral waveform library to compare healthy and faulty waveform signals.

The AutoScope comes equipped with four colour coded ‘bed of nails’ type probe connectors that offer superior wire connectability. It has a 50 frame live record with playback and also glitch capture, which enables the technician to easily review anomalies. Michelin Runs Training Seminar in Bahrain

A total of 33 employees from Bahrain tyre specialist Ebrahim Khalil Kanoo (E K Kanoo) have been trained at a workshop organised by Michelin. The training was conducted by the Michelin’s Bahrain representative and technical sales officer Mahmoud Madi; and was the first workshop of its kind to be led by Michelin in Bahrain, according to local news sources. Ebrahim K. Kanoo B.S.C. serves customers ranging from on-road to off-road for passenger vehicles; and heavy duty truck tyres and specialised tyres for industrial and construction equipment. The division offers brands such as Michelin, BF Goodrich, Cooper, Sime, Amine and Ceat.
