Michelin North America will host the US National School Bus Maintenance Competition. Co-sponsored by the National Association of Pupil Transport (NAPT) and the South Carolina Department of Education, the 23-25 September event will be held at MNA’s training center in Donaldson, South Carolina.

The Exhaust Tyres Batteries (ETB) group, which has branches across the Midlands and is part of the First Stop network of tyre dealerships, has recently seen its head office re-developed to become the latest ‘model store’ for the network. ETB and Bridgestone have made a significant investment in the refurbishment of the head office, based in Worcester, including the complete overhaul of the exterior and a new reception area to provide a more appealing environment for customers.
Forensic tyre examination specialist Brian Lawton has published Tyre Essentials, a new reference book covering almost everything to do with tyres. In the new book Lawton, a director of Newlaw Associates Limited, calls on his vast experience of the tyre industry to compile a tome covering important areas such as tyre construction, markings, manufacture, technology and legislation. In addition, the publication contains a thesaurus of around 800 tyre related terms and definitions.
Pirelli Tyre has signed a memorandum of cooperation with Romania’s Health Ministry, pledging to finance a training programme for staff at a hospital in Slatina, where the Italian company’s Romanian factory is located. Medical staff from the County Emergency Hospital’s Emergency Reception Unit will receive training at Milan’s Niguardia hospital, continuing a cooperation between the two units that began around a year and a half ago.
The document was signed in Slatina by Pirelli Tyre’s Romania director Enrico Malerba and Romanian health minister Ioan Bazac on July 23. Italy’s ambassador to Romania, Mario Cospito, also attended the signing ceremony.
Retired cop Ronnie Faison has joined Raybestos as technical consultant and official spokesperson for the new Raybestos Police Braking System. Faison served for 35 years as equipment superintendent for the North Carolina Highway Patrol, managing one of the largest police fleets in the country, Raybestos said.
“The North Carolina Highway Patrol was involved in countless research and development tests with Raybestos product engineers at our driver training facility,” said Faison. “They are constantly striving to improve their product and that’s why Raybestos police brakes have always outperformed the competition, and why the new complete Police Braking System from Raybestos will perform unlike anything else in the fleet industry.”
In his new role, Faison’s responsibilities will include everything from product development and testing to public speaking engagements and appearing in Raybestos product spotlights and ads. (Tire Review/Akron)

The entry process is simple: Those making the nomination need to provide basic information about the dealership being nominated and write a short (300-word maximum) essay explaining why that dealership should be considered.

The Sri Lankan government is reportedly discussing a programme of measures designed to support domestic tyre production. According to the local ITN news network, minister Kumara Welgama made the announcement during a debate on “supplementary estimates for the Industrial development ministry.” The support package is currently estimated to be in the region of 200 million rupees (£2.5 million) and is intended to fund “the provision of technology to enhance production capacity of industrial establishments and the receipt of new technologies.” Mould making, training and international promotion were also mentioned in the announcement.
Rotary Lift and Chief Automotive Technologies have joined forces, with parent company, Dover Industrial Products announcing the formation of Vehicle Service Group (VSG). Tom Giacomini, Dover Industrial Products president and CEO said: “This newly formed group includes two Dover companies, Rotary and Chief Automotive Technologies, and will greatly enhance our ability to provide superior levels of service and support to our automotive customers whilst developing the company’s facilities, technology, personnel and resources.”
As a result of the move, Chief will relocate to Rotary’s world HQ and North American manufacturing facility in Madison, Indiana, USA. Gary Kennon, president of the newly formed Vehicle Service Group said: “We are extremely excited about the potential of this group to provide a level of service and support to our customers that’s unmatched in this industry.”

Continental Tire Canada has launched an all-new marketing support program through its website. The addition is dedicated to dealers and distributors, the company said, and offers POS signage, displays, communications material and merchandise. “Our goal is to support our customers the best way possible. After launching our on-line training initiative, Engage 360, in January, this marketing support program is the second Web-based marketing tool we have launched this year,” said Maiti Leinss, marketing coordinator.
Dealers can log in via the Internet or Conti’s extranet, using the same ID and password for all applications. While basic items will be offered for free, supplementary items can be paid for online, Conti said, with all orders eligible for co-op dollars. (Tire Review/Akron)
Road safety – in particular the use of seatbelts – is to be the main theme presented by the Emirates Driving Institute when it attends Barbican Turbo the Middle East’s custom, tuning and motorsports festival organised by United Business Media from the 8-10 of October at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, Abu Dhabi.
Road safety is a particular concern in the United Arab Emirates where figures released by the Abu Dhabi Health Authority and the Ministry of Interior indicate 424 people were killed on the roads in Abu Dhabi and a total of 1,071 were killed country-wide in 2008. To combat this issue the Emirates Driving Institute aims to achieve excellence in the field of driver training and road safety and believes a reduction in road traffic accidents can only be achieved by improving the current skills level and knowledge of the driving population; something which they plan to do while at Barbican Turbo.
