Goodyear Attains “Primary Tyre Supplier” Status with International

Goodyear truck tyres will be available for fitment on all International Truck & Engines vehicles in the US following the decision to name the Akron based tyremaker as an International Truck primary tyre supplier. Through this arrangement Goodyear’s fuel-efficient Fuel Max Technology and self-sealing DuraSeal mixed-service tyres are available for selection by International Truck customers, with the Fuel Max fitted as OE to the International ProStar family of tractors.

TM Logistics Trial Michelin Tyres

TM Logistics Ltd is conducting an “extensive” tyre trial across its newly delivered fleet of 10 tractor units. The test will be carried out using 10 identical Euro 4 MAN TGA tractors operating at 44 tonnes; five specified with Michelin ‘E’ segment regional tyres (XZE2+ / XDE2+) and five with low rolling resistance Michelin Energy ‘A’ segment tyres (XZA2 / XDA2), as part of an ongoing equipment utilisation programme for the company’s mixed MAN and Scania fleet.

The company operates approximately 170 commercial vehicles, ranging from 7.5 tonne rigids to 44 tonne tractor units, as well as a fleet of 300 trailers. “As a company, we are constantly looking at ways of reducing our carbon footprint and with vehicles averaging 100,000 miles a year, the biggest challenge is to increase the fuel saving potential of each vehicle,” explains Adam Purshall, Head of Engineering and Compliance at TML.

Eurostone from NDI –Tyres for Wet or Dry Winters

Nordisk Dæk Import AS (NDI) is a major supplier of tyres and wheels to European markets. The Danish company was established in 1970 and today its headquarters in the town of Brørup occupy more than 56,000 square metres of office and warehouse space. The company boasts a sizeable presence in its home market of Denmark – throughout the country NDI also operates nine strategically located branches and 50 company owned “Super Dæk Service” retail outlets, employing a total of approximately 750 people.

The company also produces wheels to order for industrial and agricultural applications, specialising in adapting rims to individual customer’s requirements. A third related field in which NDI operates is retreading. The company’s retreading subsidiary, Euroband, is Denmark’s largest manufacturer of retreaded tyres for trucks, buses, tractors and earthmovers. The Euroband facility is also located in Brørup.

Alcaline: ‘Continental Ideal in the Long Run’

International haulier Alcaline (UK) Limited has reported that it finds Continental tyres ideally suited to the sort of long-distance operation that takes its trucks deep into Italy and increasingly into Eastern Europe. From the UK, the company runs 40 tractor units and 60 trailers out of its base at Ashford in Kent, which is conveniently located for the Channel tunnel and Dover ferry port. Coiled steel, paper and automotive parts are the main products carried and the company plays a key role in the supply chain for several prestige car makers.

Almost all the trucks are DAF’s top-of-the range XF95 and XF105 two axle tractors – the latter being the current ‘International Truck of the Year’ – operating at 40 tonnes gross. Trailers are high-quality, tri-axle curtainsiders by Schmitz Cargobull, including ‘mega cube’ units of up to 104 cubic metres capacity, and all are on air suspension.

Michelin Discontinues Bias-Ply Agricultural Tyres in North America

Michelin Agricultural Tires has decided to discontinue the supply of BFGoodrich brand bias-ply agricultural tyres to North America. The company’s decision to market a radial only range comes at a time when radial tyres make up more than 30 per cent of the overall North American agricultural tyre market, and the benefits of radials to agricultural users, such as greater load carrying capacity and reduced soil compaction, ensure this proportion will continue to increase.

“Since Michelin acquired the BFGoodrich brand in 1989, we have seen tremendous change in the agricultural industry,” said Bill Schafer, vice president of marketing and sales for Michelin North America Agricultural Tires. “Farming operations have increased in size and tractors, harvesters and sprayers have grown larger and more powerful as a result. More than ever, these machines need the durability and performance advantages that radial technology delivers compared to bias-ply construction.

Many Happy Returns

This year the Carlisle Tire and Wheel Company will reach the ripe old age of 90, but the company is showing itself to be remarkably sprightly for a nonagenarian. Founded in September 1917 in the small town of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Carlisle Tire and Rubber Company, as it was then known, began life in an age when most people’s idea of an all-terrain vehicle was a donkey or a mule, and the tractors that were beginning to make their presence felt in the countryside ran on wide metal tyres. The idea of the quad bikes and ATVs, so much a part of the modern company’s product portfolio, still lay 50 years in the future.

The first products produced by the fledgling company were inner tubes, and before long the company had 30 employees producing car tyre inner tubes. Following tough times during the Great Depression and rubber shortages during and immediately after the Second World War, the company was re-formed as the Carlisle Corporation. The following year Carlisle produced their first tyres, initially specialising upon the bicycle market. In 1960 Carlisle produced its first industrial tyre, and eight years later the company entered the motorcycle tyre and tube market.

A Leader in its Field

Goodyear has sold over 700,000 of the Optitrac tyre, making this one of the most popular farm tyre ranges on the market. Goodyear Optitrac first arrived on the European farm scene in 1999, with the introduction of the DT812, 70 series tyre, and was complemented by the DT818, 65 series variant, in 2001. The range was further extended by the introductions of the DT824 volume range, DT830 super volume range and DT800 in row crop sizes. The Optitrac family was further extended at the end of 2004, with the DT806, 85 series tyre, making a total of six products in the range.

In 2006 another family member was launched. Named the Goodyear Optitrac R+, this extended the performance capabilities of the range further, by providing even greater traction and carrying higher loads at speeds over 40 mph. This tyre was designed for the next generation of faster operating, compact, high-performance tractors over 150 hp.

Heading from Strength to Strength

Following its purchase by the TYM Group in 2004, TYM International has had a remarkably successful three years, with year on year growth forcing the company to seek new and larger freehold premises in Kings Lynn at the start of 2007. Although under new ownership TYM continued their longstanding relationship with Slovakian tyremaker Matador, and today have supplied the brand to UK wholesalers for more than a decade. It is largely thanks to TYM, in addition to the manufacturer’s links with Germany’s Continental, that Matador has left behind its former image as a budget brand in the UK.

In the last three or so years TYM has added two more key brands to their portfolio, with the company commencing the supply of Triangle Tyres products in 2004, an arrangement further cemented by the signing of a three-year deal in September 2006. “Triangle is a great product with a superb range in passenger, Truck and Earthmover,” commented TYM International general manager Steve Eke. “This complete product range has fitted well into the portfolio of our company.” A further feather in the company’s cap came at the end of 2004 when TYM was appointed as a UK importer of products manufactured by Taiwan-based Kenda Tire.

Tread Rubber Up in 2007: RMA

(Akron/Tire Review) RMA predicts that 2007 tread rubber shipments will be up 2.3 per cent from 2006.

Sales of retreaded medium truck tyres fell some 4 per cent in 2006 versus the year prior, a decline driven primarily by heavy purchases of new tractors ahead of implementation of new diesel emissions regulations.

RMA said the predicted increase represents some 230,000 retreaded tyres, covering all market segments, and said the anticipated increases will come primarily in the OTR and truck tyre segments, where replacement market sales are expected to be up slightly.

Regular Checks and a Tyre You Trust – a Winning Combination

Companies operating vehicles on intense round-the-clock timed-delivery work need tyres they can depend on. One such company is PF Whitehead Transport Services Limited, based in Croydon. PF Whitehead perform a wide array of work – including dedicated pallet load haulage as part of the Palletways network and contract work for the DIY chains B&Q and Ikea – and this varied work sees the company running a fleet of 39 vehicles, ranging in size from 3.5 tonne panel vans right through to 44 tonne HGV units.

PF Whitehead know the old adage ‘time is money’ is more than just a wise saying. As fleet manager Geoff Walker explains, “delays caused by tyre failures are not only costly in terms of call-out charges and replacement costs, but they’re also highly disruptive to an intensive delivery operation where tightly-scheduled deliveries are required.” He adds: “When you take account of all the costs involved, an on-road tyre repair or replacement can cost in excess of £500.”

Firestone Launches Maxi-Traction Agri-Tyre Range

Firestone has launched a new range of tractor tyres designed for high horsepower tractors above 175 hp. The main advantage of the Maxi-Traction range is that they have been specifically designed to run at a higher inflation pressure than many other brands. The tyres can be inflated to 2.4 bar, thanks to the design and manufacture of the casing. This enables a higher load to be carried. For example, the 710/70 R38 SS can carry a load of 6150kg at speeds up to 50 km/h.

Goodyear India to Pay Dividend

Goodyear India has stated that a meeting of the company’s board of directors will be held on March 25 to review the annual financial results for the year ended December. 31, 2006, and it is reported that the board will recommend the payment of a dividend.

The company operates two manufacturing facilities in India, one of which, the Ballabhgarh plant near Delhi, has recently been the subject of a £4.7 million expansion program aimed at doubling farm tyre production to 700 units a day. The close proximity of the Ballabhgarh plant to the factories of three main tractor manufacturers – Eicher, Escorts and Punjab Tractors – was instrumental in the decision to expand the Goodyear facility.

As of March 21 Goodyear India shares were trading on the Bombay Stock Exchange at Rs 143.65 (£1.68), down Rs 0.55 or 0.38 per cent.

Michelin Earns US Agri Journal Award

The US agricultural journal Farm Industry News has recognised Michelin’s new Ultraflex Technology as one of the most significant innovations of the past year. The publication presented Michelin Agricultural Tires with a FinOvation Award at a banquet during February’s 2007 Farm Machinery Show held in Kentucky.

Tyre De-vulcanization Concept Gains WRAP Commercialisation Support

Tyre recycler Rubber-Regen LLP has become the first company to sign up for support through the Recycling Commercialisation Centre, the facility established by WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) to support and accelerate the growth and development of early stage technologies in the recycling sector.
