Continental recommends global OEMs adopt direct TPMS technology

Continental recommends car manufacturers worldwide adopt the consistent use of direct measuring technology in their new car models to ensure “vehicle tyres are always inflated to an optimum level.” Writing in a press statement promoting the international tyre, TPMS and automotive supplier’s position on the issue, Continental said its recommendation is based on “steadily rising requirements to take on TPMS” and also reflects the “significant potential of direct measuring technology, making it possible to exploit the greater contribution to CO2 reduction.”

ATEQ’s new torque tool offers precise measurement and control when tightening any torque-specific fixings. Its compact size allows smaller fasteners to be tightened by hand when a torque wrench is too large or too highly rated to be suitable.

Diagnosing and resetting TPMS issues

Tyre fitting bays and garages increasingly being convinced to do TPMS sensor work by the argument that they are giving away business to main dealers by not offering this service. The reason tyre depots haven’t done so much of this work in the past is because they are either ill-equipped or are worried about working with tyre sensors, says tyresensors.com.

Autologic: Automechanika Middle East ‘perfect platform for diagnostics’

Autologic Diagnostics Ltd will showcase its Autologic diagnostic tool at Automechanika Middle East 2011 in June. Offering an all-encompassing approach to vehicle diagnostics, the software allows for garages to operate independently with success. The UK-based manufacturer has announced it will participate at Automechanika Middle East for the first time in 2011. According to the company, the firm’s participation is in order to increase market awareness of the brand in the GCC region and to introduce their innovative products and services to this fast emerging market.

TouchRemote launched

It might not be regarded as diagnostics per se, but Pro-Align recently announced the launch of ‘TouchRemote’, an iPhone App’ which gives users full wireless remote operation of Hunter WinAlign alignment systems. For maximum workshop flexibility, users can monitor live vehicle measurements, control WinAlign software features and view vehicle specific adjustment illustrations and digital images directly on their iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Diagnostics: New aligning systems and software enhance capabilities

When talking of diagnostic equipment, many immediately think of engine analysers, hand-held electronic devices, but very few put wheel aligners or specialist balancers in that category. However, wheel service equipment specialist Pro-Align is keen to promote its comprehensive range of equipment designed to help workshops diagnose and solve many wheel and tyre related problems such as uneven tyre wear, difficult wheel vibration issues, vehicle pull or crooked steering wheels.

Schrader expects customer base to double by 2015

Following the announcement that TPMS firm Schrader Electronics is to create over 100 jobs following a £29 million investment at the company’s Northern Ireland operations off the back of European funding and securing an OE supply deal for Ford Europe, the firm expects its customer base to double.

Invest Northern Ireland offered Schrader over £5 million of the investment part funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), towards the investment projects. Of this, £1.9 million will support the expansion of the firm's production facilities, promote growth in the European and Asian markets and create a total of 130 new jobs, all of which will help the company target European and Asian markets. Schrader, which is part of the automotive and industrial division of Tomkins, already employs between 800 and 900 people in Antrim and Carrickfergus.

China TPMS regulations “on the drawing board”

A Taiwan based news source has reported claims by a domestic vehicle components supplier that China intends to make the fitment of tyre pressure monitoring systems mandatory on new cars. Kim Tsai, chairman of Mobiletron Electronics, aims for his firm to seize at least ten per cent of the market boosted by this policy – a market expected to create business opportunities in excess of NT$20 billion (£422 million).

Vehicle manufacturers evaluating TRW’s ‘cost competitive' TPMS system

US motor industry supplier TRM Automotive Holdings reports its zero initiator tyre pressure monitoring system – a product the company refers to as “its lowest cost auto location system ever” –recently entered mass production and is now under evaluation with global vehicle manufacturers. Announcing the new product’s rollout, Laurent Crosnier, product portfolio director for TRW Radio Frequency Electronics, commented that “TRW seeks to bring cost competitive systems to market in our effort to deliver the safety that everyone deserves, and affirms its TPMS technological leadership with this innovative new product launch.”

100 new jobs to result from Schrader/Ford TPMS deal

A contract signed between Schrader Electronics and the Ford Motor Company has the potential to create up to 100 new automotive sector jobs in Northern Ireland. Under the terms of the agreement, Schrader Electronics will supply its direct tyre pressure monitoring systems for fitment to Ford’s European model range between 2012 and 2015. This supply deal includes equipment for fitment on the strong-selling Ford Fiesta and Focus ranges.

Schrader introduces TPMS Expert centres to the UK

Describing TPMS as “a new market for tyre dealers in Europe”, leading valve sensor and system manufacturer Schrader has announced the introduction of TPMS Expert centres into the UK. As the apparent world leader in this specialist area (the company holds a reported 50 per cent market share) Schrader is already very much active in the aftermarket supply of these components. Nevertheless, this latest move sees the company move to extend and enhance its position in the market and sees Schrader offer “complete support to tyre specialists from technical training to products, tools, accessories and promotion of this new service.” In addition TPMS Expert Centre signage will enable customer recognition for the provision of this new expertise.

Hyundai develops tyre pressure monitoring system

Hyundai Mobis Co., (the South Korean carmaker’s mobile, system, parts and service arm) reports that it has developed the first locally made tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and plans to supply it to foreign auto firms as well as its local affiliates. The company said the new device demonstrates equal performance with overseas-made rival products and is easier to install due to its use of rubber valves.

The new device reportedly weighs 10 per cent less than rival products due to its smaller battery size, uses 30 per cent less electricity and shows a stronger performance in securing wheel balancing, Hyundai Mobis said.

TPMS is the future, says Autogem

In order to prosper in today's competitive market, a company needs to be able to identify trends and wholeheartedly embrace new opportunities. A good example of this is Autogem, which used to be a market leader in the supply of exhaust fittings and workshop consumables, but which is now regarded as an authority on tyre pressure monitoring systems.

While it is true that all run-flat tyres must have some form of TPMS, the number is still comparatively small. However, says Prashant Chopra, managing partner at Autogem, this will all change, as from November 2012, a European Directive states that all new category M1 vehicles will have to be fitted with TPMS.
