It’s a little over a year since Maxion Wheels and ZF Openmatics announced they’d teamed up to develop the Smart Wheel, and Maxion now reports that road testing of this connectivity solution will commence in 2020. During the Ioche-Maxion Investor Day 2020, held online yesterday, Maxion Wheels’ chief executive officer confirmed that Smart Wheel prototypes would be on the road before the end of the year.
Sumitomo Rubber Industries has been working together with Japan’s Gunma University since last year to develop a system that remotely monitors tyre pressure in driverless vehicles. The tyre maker reports that, having created a system that works with Level 4 autonomous vehicles, it conducted a successful proof-of-concept test of this new system on public roads on 12 November.
ATEQ TPMS Tools has launched the “Live Sensor” platform, purportedly the first real-time updating portal for every sensor maker that is in ATEQ tools. On 2 November 2020, ATEQ announced that “Live Sensor is a brand-new, patent-pending technology that allows sensor information to be updated in real-time, allowing users to keep their tool updated as new information is added”.
Wheely-Safe has appointed Caelan Kilduff to the newly created position of engineering director. Kilduff will report directly to group managing director, Gary Broadfield. His appointment by the Staffordshire-based technology company comes as the company prepares to expand its range of intelligent tyre pressure monitoring, wheel loss, and brake temperature sensing systems for the commercial vehicle, construction, agricultural and fleet car and van sectors.
Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI), manufacturer of the Falken tyre brand, recently began proof-of-concept testing for a new kind of tyre pressure management solutions service that remotely monitors tyre pressure and temperature. Through this testing project, SRI will evaluate the service’s efficacy in supporting safer driving, specifically its effectiveness in reducing maintenance time and workload and preventing operator error. SRI says the project contributes towards its “ultimate aim” of establishing a business model that “helps to enhance the safety and economy of driving.”
Following the release of the H36, H46 and H47, Hamaton has teamed up with ATEQ once again to launch the new H56 TPMS tool. According to the company, the H56 boasts the same great features as ATEQ’s all-in-one VT56 but comes with free software updates for five years (which cease if you upgrade to the all-sensor option). The five-year deal offers four more years than its counterpart.

Bridgestone Corporation has introduced what it describes as a “revolutionary” new MasterCore off-the-road (OTR). Speaking at a press conference in Tokyo on 7 August 2020, company representatives explained that MasterCore tyres are engineered for “ultra-high durability with performance that can be customized to various mine sites and operations”. The MasterCore product line has initially launched for 63-inch tyres, with additional patterns and sizes available to customers in 2021.
Previewed at last year’s Autopromotec, Hamaton is promoting its H47 device, which the company calls “the most cost-effective diagnostic tool launched by Hamaton to date.”
At the end of June Dynamic TPMS, a division of JohnDow Industries, launched its latest TPMS sensor. The DVT-PRO is a single sensor solution that is multi-frequency programmable and features “Dual Valve Technology”. According to the company, this new single sensor solution is an addition to the Dynamic DVT Pro-Select three-sensor offering. This development has also led to increased vehicle coverage while reducing inventory investment.
Following the launch of its diagnostic system in late June, at the start of July, across the Atlantic Continental introduced two new Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) tools designed to help shops optimize their investment in TPMS and tyre service. With the Autodiagnos TPMS D and SE Tools, professional technicians can handle all of the TPMS and tyre service requirements of their customers.
TPMS sensor manufacturer Sensata Technologies is cutting 160 jobs in the town of Antrim, Northern Ireland. The news follows Sensata’s decision to close its Carrickfergus, County Antrim operation in January 2020. And this was part of a downward trend that saw the company cut 125 jobs in Carrickfergus in 2018.
Autogem has launched a new, advanced TPMS handheld solution, the I-sensor Pro, in an online event for customers. The device upgrades the original I-sensor, offering customers increased time-saving and potential revenue generation. The I-sensor Pro features Wi-Fi connectivity, wireless Bluetooth and an integrated auto-focus camera, allowing for instant, personalised tyre pressure reporting. It also features a completely integrated tread depth measuring device. The original i-sensor handheld TPMS servicing device was launched in 2013, and has since sold more than 3,500 units in the UK.
The Ateq VT Truck – the smart heavy-duty vehicle TPMS maintenance tool for dealerships, multi-brand workshops, fleet managers and hauliers, offered by Tyresure Ltd now includes 30+ truck, bus and trailer sensor combinations.

In recent years, the popularity of multideck trailers has steadily increased as more and more fleets – especially those transporting in the grocery sector – recognise the environmental and cost benefits that these space-maximising trailers can bring. However, such trailer configurations are not without issues. A heavier load and greater frequency of use can lead to tyre pressure challenges and temperature build up around trailer wheels.
