Toyota iQ Is Japan’s Car Of The Year

The revolutionary Toyota iQ, the world’s smallest four-seater passenger car, has won the 2008 Japan Car of the Year award by a landslide over rivals such as the Citroën C5, Audi A4 and Jaguar XF. The innovative iQ scored more than double the points of the second placed, receiving top marks from 39 of the 65 jurors who voted.

The judges praised the iQ for its space efficiency and design, particularly the iQ’s capacity for seating four people within a body less than three metres long, as well as its combination of high levels of safety and low CO2 emissions.

Toyota Prius Wins BTI Green Award

The Toyota Prius has been named alongside must have gizmos such as the Apple iPhone, BBC iPlayer and the Nintendo Wii as a winner at the inaugural British Technology Awards, having collected the Greenest Technology of the Year Award. The British Technology Awards, inspired by the publisher of technophile magazines Computeractive and Personal Computer World, seeks to celebrate Britain’s national love of technology.

Bridgestone Runflats OE Option on 2009 US RAV4

When the upcoming 2009 Toyota RAV4 Sport is released in the US, it will be available with Bridgestone Dueler run-flat tyres as part of the optional Sport Appearance Package, reports the tyremaker.

Buyers will thus, says Bridgestone, experience the outstanding performance and quiet comfort of the Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 run-flat in size P235/55R18 99H. The tyre – the first-ever run-flat application on the RAV4 – has reinforced sidewalls utlising proprietary Bridgestone Side Support Run-Flat technology to support the vehicle in case of a loss of air pressure. The highly reinforced structure of the Bridgestone Dueler H/L 400 RFT has been specifically designed to complement the ride and handling characteristics of Toyota’s popular SUV, Bridgestone adds.

Bridgestone Potenzas Provide Performance For Racing Icons

Bridgestone-brand Potenza RE-01R tires with UNI-T technology provided legendary performance for some of the top drivers in the world at the Toyota Race of Legends recently.

UK Car Registrations Lowest Since 1966

New car registrations fell through the floor in August to their lowest level since 1966. The news prompted the SMMT to call on government to kick-start consumer confidence. “August is one of the quietest months for the new car market, but this year it was the lowest since 1966 with only 63,225 registrations,” said Paul Everitt, SMMT chief executive.

Toyota Decreases UK Plant Production

Toyota is set to cut production for five months at its Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, according to a report in The Times. Other major carmakers are said to be “monitoring the market.” Burnaston was the second-largest car producer in the UK last year (after the Nissan plant in Sunderland), producing 277,000 cars. The cuts will result in a reduction of output of 15,000 cars by the end of the year. The 3,800 permanent staff will reportedly stay and engage in training and plant maintenance. However, some of the 220 temporary workers will leave.

Toyota SA to Change OE Tyre After Safety Concerns Voiced

Toyota South Africa has acknowledged that the tyres fitted to its strong selling Fortuner SUV model may cause the vehicle to experience handling problems on gravel surfaces. Although the carmaker has not received any official complaints about the tyres fitted – General Grabber in size 265/70R16 – intense debate on internet forums set up by the country’s 4×4 fraternity has been sufficient ground for the company to carry out its own investigation and decide upon replacing this tyre as OE fitment.

Balfour Beatty Trials Cooper Discoverer S/T Tyres

Balfour Beatty, the engineering, construction, services and investment business, is currently undertaking a “hugely successful” trial of Cooper Tire & Rubber Company’s Discoverer S/T tyres. The Company fitted a 205R16 set of the 4×4 rubber to one of its Toyota Hi-Lux vehicles, which are used on the most demanding of terrains around the UK during their exceptionally hard lives.

The Discoverer S/T is a hybrid of three designs – all-terrain, high void and commercial traction. The beefy, rugged tyre wears evenly, while its deep tread and scalloped shoulder design offers excellent traction on soft surfaces. Reactions from Balfour Beatty staff on the performance of the tyre are said to have been “exceptional.”

Kovalainen Victorious in Hungary

Heikki Kovalainen drove his McLaren to its first victory in Formula One at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Ferrari’s Felipe Massa failed to capitalise on his lead entering the final four laps, retiring after engine failure with the finish minutes away.

Timo Glock of Toyota finished impressively in second – claiming his first ever podium – while Kimi Raikkonen regained some of his form, which has been absent for some time, taking the chequered flag in a strong third place. Lewis Hamilton was able to hold on to his Championship lead, finishing fifth – and just behind rival Fernando Alonso – after a puncture scuppered his chances of a podium.

“All About Customer Responsiveness”: Cooper Releases New Sizes

Cooper tire & Rubber Co has unleashed a tidal wave of new tyre sizes for high performance and sports utility vehicles, which are – the company states –
“all about performance, customer responsiveness.” The company aims to provide consumers with the added performance and flexibility necessary for drivers in these two sectors.

The Cooper Zeon XSTA is a new asymmetrical, all-season sport truck tire available in 15- and 16-inch (H rated), and 17-, 18-, 22- and 24-inch (V rated). This new line includes fitments for vehicles such as the Land Rover, Jeep, Porsche Cayenne and Mercedes SUVs. The size range covers both original equipment sizes for sport trucks, SUVs and cross-over vehicles, as well as the popular plus-sized fitments. Additionally, the Cooper Zeon XST now offers the 295/30R22 XL size for premier SUVs and cross-over vehicles.

Toyota Becomes Canadian Retailer of Conti Products

Continental has expanded its retail presence in Canada following the signing of an agreement with Toyota. Both Continental and General branded passenger car and light commercial tyres will be sold through 239 Toyota and 30 Lexus dealerships across Canada.

“This agreement gives Toyota and Lexus customers access to our catalogue of passenger and light truck tyres and helps to increase our retail presence without compromising our existing tyre dealer network,” said Guy Hardiman, General Manager of Continental Tire Canada.

Dunlop India Acquires British Component Maker

Dunlop India has bought Schlegel Automotive, one of Britain’s largest auto component manufacturers. The company supplies rubber sealings to major car manufacturers, such as Ford, Toyota and BMW.

Dunlop India has been part of the Ruia Group for three years, when the corporation bought the tyre manufacturer’s ailing Indian operation.

First Stop Appoints North and Scotland BDM

Bridgestone has appointed Kumar Ash Sisodia as a business development manager for its First Stop network of independent tyre dealerships. Responsible for the ‘northern region,’ Ash will work with dealerships across the North of England and Scotland.

Ash brings a wealth of experience to the role having worked within Bridgestone’s consumer sales department as Area sales manager since 2000. Ash, alongside fellow business development managers, Chris Hawkins, Dean Dyoss and Steve Lane will expand the network of quality tyre dealerships which has seen a successful first half of the year.

Marangoni Sponsors Ultimate Street Car

Maragoni Tyre is to act as title sponsor of the forthcoming Ultimate Street Car (USC) show. The announcement follows the success of Fast Show and more recently Jap Show. Marangoni is returning to Santa Pod, as title sponsor for the USC event, on the 1 – 3 August, 2008. The Marangoni stand will feature a live DJ, girls, project cars and a live Marangoni Pit Stop Challenge. Project cars on display include “the mighty Progetto Marangoni Toyota Yaris” and the UK debut appearance of the Marangoni Fiat 500 Road Car.

Marangoni expects the USC to draw in crowds of over 30,000 visitors, making it the largest modified car event in Europe. The marketing department’s hope is that visitors to Marangoni Fast Show, Jap Show and Marangoni USC will not fail to recognize and accept the brand as a top quality UHP tyre choice.

Goodyear Receives Hino Motors’ Excellence Award

Hino Motors Manufacturing USA Inc. has presented Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company with its Quality Excellence Award for commercial tyres on Hino medium-duty trucks.

Hino Motors said the award was given to Goodyear for “outstanding product quality.” Goodyear supplies Hino Motors, a Toyota Group Company, with a variety of truck tyres, including Unisteel G149 RSA RH and G182 RSD regional-service tyres.
