Kumho Tops Magazine Test

Kumho’s ECTSA V70A has won a tyre test of road-legal track day tyres. The test, run by German motoring magazine Auto Bild test & tuning, pitted semi-slicks from Michelin, Toyo, Yokohama and Pirelli against each other. Auto Bild testers praised the winning tyre for its excellent lateral and directional stability as well as its dry braking. The magazine awarded Michelin and Toyo joint second place, Yokohama took fourth position, while Pirelli came last. Auto Bild testers also praised the generally high quality of all of the entrants.

Toyo’s Best Autosport Show Ever

In its recent first half 2005 results, Toyo Tire & Rubber reported that operating income rocketed 120.8 per cent. This was said to be due to a 25.9 per cent increase in sales of high value products, with general sales improving by 8.7 per cent. Now, having exhibited at the Autosport Show, Toyo is claiming to have “kicked into overdrive” with its “best show ever.” Tyres & Accessories took the opportunity to catch up with marketing director, Mike Rignall.

Toyo Executives Officially Open European Office

Having established its new European offices on 1 January, Toyo Tire invited guests to an official opening that fused European and Asiatic cultures. Dignitaries present included Toyo president and chief executive, Yoshio Kataoka and the Herbert Napp, the Mayor of Neuss, the German city where the new offices are based.

Toyo Establishes a New Sales Subsidiary in Europe

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd. (President and CEO Yoshio Kataoka) will establish a sales subsidiary in Neuss, Germany on January 1, 2005. The new company, known as Toyo Tire Europe GmbH, is a joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation, set up to serve the entire European market.

Toyo’s Operating Income Doubles

Publishing its first half 2005 results, Toyo has reported that its operating income has rocketed 120.8 per cent, compared with the same period last year. In the period ended 30 September, the company’s operating income demonstrated the most marked increase growing from 1.893 billion to 4.18 billion yen (£21.4 million). Toyo achieved a 6.7 per cent increase in net sales rising from 120 billion to 128 billion yen (£657 million).

One explanation for the rapid ascent of the figures is the company’s increase of UHP and SUV sales. Sales of these high margin products have gone up 25.9 per cent, with tyre sales in general improving by 8.7 per cent. In Europe the company says that this has been largely down to favourable sales and marketing of new products including its Proxes T1R.

Toyo Prepares Small-Lot Production in US

Toyo Tire has released details of its US production plant, several weeks after laying the foundation stone for the Cartersville, Georgia, production facility. According to Deutsche Bank, the Japanese tyre manuafacturer is going to install a flexible, automated production system which is well suited for small-lot production. This is said to produce better quality products than conventional methods. The company calls the system its Advanced Tyre Operation Module or ATOM.

Toyo Tire first announced this production system two years ago and developed the technology with support from Toyota Motor, running pilot production schemes in Japan. The new factory, Toyo’s first US tyre production facility, will cost $392 million and will create up to 900 jobs. The factory will have an annual capacity of two million passenger car and light truck tyres after construction is completed in 2006.

Toyo Tire Launches US Construction Project

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co officially “broke ground” this week for its new manufacturing plant and warehousing facility in Bartow County, Georgia. State officials and local dignitaries witnessed the event which marks the official start of construction of the company’s first wholly owned North American tyre manufacturing facility.

The 1.03 million square feet building will be built on a 150-acre site and will initially be able to produce 2 million passenger, light truck and SUV tyres annually. Toyo has invested $150 million into the products so far.

Toyo Speed into Rockingham

When Toyo decided to introduce two new tyres to the UK market, the company did it in style. The Proxes T1-R and R888 made their debut at Europe’s fastest racetrack, Rockingham Motorspeedway, highlighting the new lines’ ultra-high performance calibre. Dealers and press representatives from all over the UK spent two days at the 200mph circuit test driving the new tyres in BMW 330 coupes and Mini Cooper S cars.

It is clear that Toyo is proud of its new products what’s more the tyre manufacturer is confident about the new tyres’ performance. The T1-R’s predecessor, the T1-S, received excellent reviews in the European media and the new tyre is expected to receive similarly good results when it is tested independently. Perhaps that is why Toyo representatives were so keen for their tyres to be put to the test at the Rockingham circuit.

Toyo has really focused on the handling and wet performance of the T1-R, as it did with its predecessor. In addition Toyo have aimed to reduce the noise level of the T1-S. In order to achieve these goals, Toyo embarked on a completely new construction that utilised a more rigid carcass, based on either rayon or polyester, depending on the size. This modification is responsible for the impressive traction observed by drivers at Rockingham. Handling was improved by using flexible belts within the carcass and a one-piece nylon band in the tread shoulder is responsible for positively influencing the uniformity and high-speed performance of the tyre. The improved handling that made an impact on the slalom course has come by virtue of a stiffer bead construction. All the tyres in the range will include a rim guard to protect against curb damage.

Toyo Receive Manufacturer of the Year Award

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd., has announced that Toyo Tire Corp, a US tyre marketing subsidiary of Toyo Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd has been honoured with Manufacturer of the Year Award at the International Auto Salon in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Toyo Tire Corp is the first company in the tyre industry to receive the award. The Sport Compact Council of host organisation, SEMA, presented the award.

The Manufacturer of the Year Award is presented to one automotive parts maker each year and is awarded to the manufacturer that has made the most significant impact in the sport compact field.

Goodyear Face Price Rigging Commission

In what is proving to be a bad year for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., the company has announced that it is one of several tyre producers that are under investigation from Japan’s Fair Trade Commission for alleged price rigging.

Toyo Chooses Bartow County

Following what the company have called “robust overseas demand” Toyo has announced that its new tyre plant will be situated in Bartow County, Georgia in the USA. The site, situated outside the state capital, Atlanta, was chosen above other prospective locations mainly based in the south-eastern United States.

The new facility will use the company’s automated tyre manufacturing system, which enables it, according to Toyo, “to maintain a high standard of quality while realising the flexibility to produce small production runs of multiple lines if tyres.” A new subsidiary company, Toyo Tire North America Inc., will own and operate the manufacturing facility.

The tyre producers plan to spend a total of nearly $400 million on the plant. In the first phase the company will spend $146 million on the plant and hope to begin production in 2006. Initially 350 employees will run the plant. In the second phase the company will invest $127 million and will create 300 more jobs. The third phase will include a further $119 million of investment and will see the work force expand to around 900. When finished, the site will have a total floor area of 96,000 square metres. Toyo estimates that the factory will produce two million passenger and light truck tyres a year. The site in Bartow County will also include a 40,000 square metre warehouse that will service the south-eastern states.

Toyo and Michelin Conclude A Licensing Agreement for PAX

Toyo and Michelin signed a licensing agreement, under which Michelin will license its PAX System technology to Toyo. With the new agreement, Toyo obtains rights to produce and market run-flat systems for passenger cars and light trucks based on PAX System, both for auto makers and the replacement tire market in Japan.

Tyre firm gets clearance to build

Bartow County, Georgia, has granted a Japanese tyre maker the industrial zoning it needs to build a 125 million dollar tyre plant in a rural area. The decision went against strong opposition and opponents vowed to continue to fight the development. Bartow County has lost more than 2,000 manufacturing jobs in about three years and the new plant expects to bring 350 jobs, at an average wage of 12 dollars an hour. State and local recruiters will not name the tyre maker, but opponents believe it is Toyo Tire, whose U.S. operations are headquartered in Cypress, California.
