Toyo Names Nick Manning as UK Marketing Manager

Toyo Tyre UK Ltd has announced that (as of 3 September) Nick Manning has been appointed as Marketing Manager for the UK. Manning joined Toyo from respected wholesaler Group Tyre. Prior to serving there as director of purchasing for two years, he was General Sales Manager at Continental Car Dealer Business Unit. In fact, Manning progressed through a series of positions at Continental over an impressive 18 years including pricing, strategy and marketing before leaving for Group.

Walkinshaw Junior Gets To Grips With Westfield

The Walkinshaw name will need little introduction to any motorsport fan. Tom Walkinshaw has had a glittering career in saloon, touring and sports car racing as both a driver and constructor. Now it’s the turn of son, Fergus Walkinshaw to take the motorsport limelight. The 16 year old is already enjoying a competitive season in the Ginetta Junior racing series, but as part of his driver training recently spent a day with stunt legend Terry Grant learning the art of car-control in a Toyo T-1R equipped Westfield.

Toyo USA to Increase Prices

Effective 1 October 2007, Toyo Tire (USA) Corporation will increase the prices of consumer products by 3.5-per cent. According to Steve Weinger, senior vice president, sales & marketing, “due to continued increases in raw materials, energy, and transportation costs we must adjust our prices on consumer products. As always, Toyo remains dedicated to maintaining the highest level of product quality and customer service.”

Toyo’s Team Members Win at World Championship Off-Road Races

In the US, Team Toyo Off-Road drivers competing on Toyo Open Country M/T tyres had a great Labour Day weekend during the BorgWarner World Championship Off-Road Races at Crandon International Raceway in Wisconsin. Considered one of the biggest events on the 2007 Lucas Oil World Series of Off-Road Racing calendar, Team Toyo Off-Road drivers Curt LeDuc, Dave Waldvogel and Mike Vanden Heuvel all won races over the course of the weekend.

After this big Labor Day weekend, the Super Stock Truck class continues to have a nail-biting championship-points battle between Team Toyo Off-Road drivers Ben Wandahsega and Dave Waldvogel. During Saturday’s race, Waldvogel won his race driving his Bendix/Toyo Tires Chevy truck, while Wandahsega finished an uncharacteristic fifth place in his Forest County Potawatomi/Toyo Tires Chevy truck.

Toyo Tires – Stay in Charge, Whatever the Weather

Whether it’s the wrong kind of leaves on the line, frozen pipes or frosted locks, traditionally us Brits have never prepared well for winter… and it shows. As the sage advice goes, there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing. And whilst no sane person would brave the winter months in their summer shoes, we somehow expect our cars to.

The safety-conscious Scandinavians have it sussed. With many countries enforcing fitment of winter tyres in appropriate months, the accident figures, or rather lack of them, speak for themselves. We’ve all seen cars beached by the roadside or sliding helplessly along a poorly cleared road. Often with inevitable and expensive results. Whilst a decent set of winter tyres may tax the pocket a little, it’s small beer compared to a lost day’s work, your insurance excess – and resulting premium hike – or worse! Many fatal accidents occurring in winter could have been wholly avoidable had the vehicle in question had the right tyres fitted. Putting a price on safety really is the worst kind of false economy.

Net Sales Up, Net Income Down at Toyo

Toyo Tire & Rubber has made public its consolidated business results for the first quarter of the 2007 fiscal year (April 1, 2007 to June 30, 2007). The company reports that, due to the strong performance of the tyre business in overseas markets, net sales rose by 8,895 million yen (£37.2 million) to 82,777 million yen (£345.7 million), a 12 per cent increase on the first quarter of the 2006 fiscal year. Operating income increased 22.2 per cent to 4,217 million yen (£17.6 million), ordinary income was up 54.3 per cent to 4,240 million yen (£17.7 million). Net income, however, decreased 55.3 per cent or 4,498 million yen (£18.8 million) to 3,632 million yen (£15.2 million).

Net sales within the company’s tyre segment increased by 8,608 million yen (£35.9 million) to 58,468 million yen (£244.2 million), an increase of 17.3 per cent. From this figure, OE tyre sales declined below last year’s first quarter level, a drop the company attributes to decreased production of car lines equipped with Toyo’s products. In the domestic Japanese market demand was slow, however Toyo’s “vigorous” efforts to boost sales resulted in sales equivalent to the levels of the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, the volume of overseas sales, centring mainly on the North American market, comfortably surpassed the levels of the same period of the previous year. This increase, combined with the weaker yen, ensured higher net sales than for the previous period last year. Operating income increased by 27.9 per cent or 890 million yen (£3.7 million) over Q1 2006 to 4,075 million yen (£17.0 million).

Art Cars Roll on Toyo

Toyo Tires latest association shows the company’s artistic side. Turner-prize nominated artist Andy Saunders decided to take his well honed welding rod to an unsuspecting Citroen 2CV and totally redesign it in the style of the artist Picasso. With asymetric styling, misshapen panels and Picasso’s trademarked misplaced ‘facial features’ the 2CV remains fully road legal, sporting a brand new set of TOYO 310’s to keep the MOT tester happy!

The car was unveiled as part of Toyo’s impressive stand at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed. Launched to a mass of tabloid and broadsheet publicity, the car has also been booked up for a run of TV appearances. Overview: Cheng Shin Rubber (Maxxis)

Taiwan’s Cheng Shin Rubber Industry Co. Ltd.’s decision to establish a production base in the People’s Republic of China makes sense because of the obvious linguistic and cultural similarities and the regional proximity. This tyre manufacturer is one of the most rapidly expanding companies participating in the Chinese tyre market and is also well represented in European replacement markets with its brand Maxxis; the company also produces the Cheng Shin brand.
Since Cheng Shin Rubber (Xiamen) Ind. Ltd. – a 100 per cent subsidiary of Cheng Shin Rubber from Taiwan – first began producing tyres in the city of Xiamen (Fujian province), the site has been continuously expanded. Today, the Xiamen facility mainly produces commercial tyres but also manufactures motorcycle and bicycle tyres as well as passenger car tyres. It goes without saying that the Triangle products are DOT- and E-marked for export markets and that the production facility is also certified according to ISO and QS. According to estimates the factory has a production capacity of about 12 to 13 million units.

Toyo Chosen as ‘Technical Partner’ For Eibach Springs UK

Toyo Tyre UK has announced that the company has been chosen as an official ‘Technical Partner’ of Eibach UK, the leading suspension manufacturer. Eibach are well known in the Tuning, OE and Motorsports markets as brand leaders and are in the enviable position of being approved suppliers to many of the World’s leading automotive brands.

Having assessed and tested many other leading tyre brands, Eibach UK chose Toyo for it’s “superior balance, performance and predictability on the limit,” according to a company statement.

With immediate effect, the deal will see all Eibach UK demo and project cars rolling on a range of Toyo products including the Proxes T1-R and Proxes R888. Naturally, many Toyo project and staff cars will also run a range of Eibach products to improve their handling and appearance.

Toyo Adds 41 News Sizes Across Lines

(Akron/Tire Review) Toyo Tire (USA) Corp. has added 41 new sizes to a variety of its passenger and light truck/SUV tyres. The new sizes include OE fitments and plus sizes for custom applications, and includes one industry exclusive, Toyo claims.

“The 305/30ZR20 Proxes T1R is a brand new size to the industry and currently exclusive to Toyo. This is a cutting-edge rear plus size that was previously limited to only prototype applications. The size had never gone into actual production by any manufacturer until now,” said Robert Waytashek, Toyo’s consumer products manager.

Toyo Tyres and a Happy Meal, Please

(Akron/Tire Review) Buy a Happy Meal, get a set of Toyos. Very, very small Toyos.

In a new licensing deal with McDonald’s, replica Toyo Proxes 4 and Open Country A/T will grace two of eight Fly Wheels toys that will be packaged with Happy Meals or Mighty Kids Meals during a promotion that runs through Aug. 2.

“We are excited to have our brand associated with McDonald’s,” said Steve Weinger, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Toyo Tire (U.S.A.) Corp. “This promotion featuring Fly Wheels provides a great opportunity to further Toyo’s brand awareness with today’s young families.”

Toyo, Gordon Extend Off-Road Deal

(Akron/Tire Review) Toyo Tire (USA) Corp. has extended its contract with off-road racer Robby Gordon through 2010. Gordon will continue to compete on Toyo Open Country M/T tyres in SCORE International off-road racing circuit, including the Baja 1000, Baja 500 and Dakar rally.

Toyo Establishes Nitto Tire Canada

Toyo Tire & Rubber has established a new tyre sales company in Canada. Named Nitto Tire Canada Inc., the company began operations on July 1, and through the new company Toyo intends to enhance the Nitto tyre brand image and establish a more extensive sales network.

The Japanese tyremaker has already established similar operations in the US and Mexico through which it markets its Nitto brand products, and Toyo claims that its Nitto SUV and high performance tyres have gained a good reputation in these markets.

Yokohama Appoints Two to Management Posts

(Akron/Tire Review) Yokohama Tire Corp. has named Gregg Vandermark performance marketing manager and Rusty Taylor manager of finance and administration in the business division. Vandermark will oversee corporate and consumer ride and drives, dealer training and work with automotive enthusiast groups and car clubs. Vandermark had previously been motorsports sales manager and ultra-high performance sales manager at Toyo.

Taylor, who earned a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Southern California, will plan and forecast budgets, review proposals, generate financial models and develop business plans for sales, marketing and finance.

Toyo Launches New DOT Competition Tyre

(Akron/Tire Review) Toyo Tire (USA) Corp. has released the new Proxes R888, a DOT-approved race compound competition tyre.

Toyo said the new R888 was developed for both professional and amateur racers. The tyre features a continuous center rib for traction and directional control during dry braking, semi-slick shoulder areas for steering response and traction, an optimised contact patch for cornering, braking and acceleration, jointless cap and edge plies for high-speed dimensional stability, and a high modulus filler in the tyre bead area.

“Toyo has enjoyed a long, winning history in racing,” said Steve Weinger, Toyo’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We anticipate great success with the new Proxes R888 as it takes Toyo racing technology to a higher level.”

The Proxes R888 will be available in 17- to 19-inch sizes beginning this summer, with additional sizes coming next spring, the company said.
