Titan to Purchase Goodyear European Agri Assets

Titan International has signed a non-binding letter of intent with Goodyear Tire & Rubber to purchase certain farm tyre assets, including the Goodyear Dunlop Tires France (GDTF) Amiens North factory. The agreement is subject to the French Goodyear operation’s “satisfactory completion” of a social plan related to consumer tyre activity at the Amiens North facility, along with completion of due diligence, a definitive acquisition agreement and other standard acquisition approval requirements.

Titan Works to Address Giant Tyre Concerns

According to Bloomberg, Titan International Inc.’s bid to break into the oversized tyre market has hit a roadblock after tyres installed on trucks hauling Canadian oil sands lasted just 1 per cent as long as expected. In a telephone interview with the news service, Titan CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr said the company has halted production of the four metre tyres used on dump trucks in order to install pressure-monitoring devices. A number of tyres failed after 100 hours of work on the 400-ton trucks used to haul oil-soaked sand for Royal Dutch Shell Plc and other energy companies in Alberta, a far cry from the minimum expected lifespan of 10,000 hours, he said.

H1 Revenues May Dip 35%, Says Titan Europe

Worcestershire based wheel manufacturer Titan Europe Plc has warned that its anticipated revenue for the first half of this year may be 35 per cent lower than a year ago. The company, whose two major shareholders are Mefro Wheels GmbH and Titan International subsidiary Titan Luxembourg Sarl, notes this figure in particular reflects the further weakening its second quarter performance.

“Trading conditions remain difficult with the construction market continuing to be severely hit by the global recession,” stated a June 29 company trading update. “The directors expect by the half-year, based on constant exchange rates, that construction market volumes will be down by about 50 per cent whilst agricultural and mining markets will be down by between 25-30 per cent.

Titan International Announces Q2 Dividend

Titan International’s Board of Directors has approved a quarterly cash dividend of US$.005 (one half cent) per common share for the second quarter of 2009. The cash dividend is payable July 15, 2009, to stockholders of record on June 30, 2009.

Fines Mount Up For Titan’s Bryan Facility

Titan Tire is perhaps smarting a little after being slapped with an additional US$140,000 fine for two wilful violations of workplace safety regulations on top of the $24,500 penalty already mooted by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These violations were discovered following inspections made after a steam explosion at the company’s Bryan giant tyre facility in November 2008, in which one employee was slightly injured.

According to the Toledo Blade, OSHA follow-up inspections found problems related to the factory’s tyre curing equipment. Specifically, four of the units that use 2,900 tonnes of pressure to compress rubber and metal into 63-inch, 5.9 tonne tyres “were not adequately proof-tested and had welds of insufficient quality or strength to handle the exerted pressure.”

Titan Tire Faces Fines for Safety Violations

Titan Tire has been cited by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration for violations of federal safety rules. According to Toledo based newspaper The Blade, the company’s Bryan giant tyre facility is facing tentative fines of US$24,500 for four serious violations at the site. The violations were observed during inspections in November, December, and February.

Titan has indicated it will appeal the charges.

Soopa Toobs Emphasise Diversity of ATV Applications

All Terrain Vehicles are so named due to the broad and diverse range of off-road and increasingly on-road applications for which they are used. These machines are becoming ever more sophisticated with electric start, selectable four wheel drive, lights, power take off drive shafts, more powerful engines and differentials to improve traction and ride in the turns. Aside from their use in recreational pursuits a variety of accessories, attachments and implements are available enabling the machine to perform many duties such as weed control, pest control and hunting, livestock feeding, snow clearance, haulage duties around the farm, estate, park, garden or wherever they are used.

Of course, alongside the wide offering of parts and peripherals, the different roles the machines undertake and the varied terrains on which they are used have led to the development of a wide range of tyres. Tyres for sports machines tend to have a flat profile while utility machine tyres usually have a round topped profile. The sports tyres lend themselves to powersliding and provide good stability on medium to hard surface trail riding while the round-top tyre will perform better in soft terrain, biting deeper while also providing a softer ride. Many of the new generation of tyres designed by Carlisle are now of radial construction to offer increased traction, better puncture resistance and improved ride comfort.

Titan’s Taylor Adds Another Year to His Term

Titan International shareholders returned CEO Morry Taylor for another year as company chairman. At the annual meeting on May 14, shareholders also returned Erwin Billig and Anthony Soave to the board of directors with three-year terms. Billig was also elected vice chairman of the board, and Kent Hackamack was returned as vice president of finance and treasurer and Cheri Holley will remain as vice president and secretary. It’s Time to Work ‘Hard and Smart’, says Titan’s Taylor

While overall sales declined 8.2 per cent to US$232.6 million during the first quarter of 2009, Titan International reports that its sales of agricultural sector products hit an all-time first quarter record. “Large farm tyres and wheels were selling well in the first quarter of 2009, along with Titan’s new super giant mining tyres,” commented Titan chairman and CEO Maurice M. Taylor Jr. upon the figures’ release. These record agricultural sales of $187.3 million represent an increase of almost eight per cent on the $173.5 million generated in the first quarter of last year.

Titan Aiming for 10-Fold Expansion of Giant Tyre Production

According to Titan International chairman and CEO Maurice Taylor, the US$100 million his company has invested in the area of giant mining tyres is about to pay off. During the course of this year Titan intends to increase the production of these tyres ten-fold, a measure anticipated to propel the company towards Taylor’s goal of tripling sales to $3 billion within a five-year period.

Titan Tire Promotes Two

Titan Tire Corporation has announced two senior staff promotions. Jeff Kramer, previously operations manager for the company’s Des Moines, Iowa facility, has taken on the role of vice president of manufacturing engineering, and Dave Fines is taking Kramer’s place in Des Moines.

Jeff Kramer has been with Titan for 13 years and has held positions in tyre engineering, curing area management and production management. As vice president of manufacturing engineering, Kramer will oversee manufacturing engineering projects at all Titan Tire locations.

Bridgestone Take Advertising Centre Stage at Super Bowl

Often dubbed “advertising’s biggest stage,” Super Bowl XLIII viewers on 1 February will see two new adverts by Bridgestone, broadcast alongside the NBC network’s coverage of the biggest event in American Football. The famous Halftime Show will also be sponsored by the manufacturer; an honour indeed since Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band will be trading in their wings on some – presumably Bridgestone-shod – wheels for the event.

Two 30-second commercials named “Taters” and “Hot Item” will be aired at the end of the first and during the third quarter. The ads’ production team have aimed at creating fun, memorable commercials that emphasise the performance of Bridgestone tyres. The first features Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head – two of toy giant Hasbro’s most beloved characters – making their Super Bowl debut when their excursion on a picturesque mountain road takes an unexpected turn. The second spot takes viewers to Titan, Saturn’s largest moon, on which two music-loving space travellers cruise around in a space vehicle equipped with high-performance Bridgestone tyres.
