In February 2007, the American Tire Industry Association (TIA) will hold its “TIA Commercial Tire, Retread & Recycling Conference” for the first time. This event will take place 6-8 February in Tampa (Florida, USA) and will replace the World Tire Expo. This was held in 2005 for the last time. The new Commercial Tire and Retreading Conference will be held in concurrence with the “Transportation Technology Exhibition”. According to TIA president Bob Malerba this new event is not only good for training and educating employees in retreading businesses but also for meeting suppliers and market players. More information is available at www.tireindustry.org. About a year ago the first rumours about the future of the then sluggish World Tire Expo appeared.
(Akron/Tire Review) TIA has launched a new industry job board – Tire Industry JobNet. TIA partnered with JobTarget.com, a large provider of Internet-based job posting services, to develop the project. “Our members expressed a strong interest in this type of service,” said TIA Executive Vice President Roy Littlefield. “There is such a need for and scarcity of qualified employees in today’s marketplace. We are pleased to be able to offer this service, not only to our members, but to all companies in the industry.”

(Akron/Tire Review) TIA is keeping a tight focus on the tyre pressure monitoring system issue, and is using its Tires at Two seminars at the upcoming SEMA Show to help attendees better understand the technology and service of these units. In addition, TIA is again presenting its highly popular panel discussion “Successful Tire Dealers Share Their Secrets.” TIA’s Tires at Two seminars will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday – Oct. 31-Nov. 2 – of this year’s SEMA Show.
On 18 July the US Tire Industry Association (TIA) announced its support of House Resolution 5632, after “much deliberation,” TIA has decided to support H. R. 5632. The TIA Government Affairs Committee was able to come to a consensus after weighing the pros and cons of the legislation, the association said in a statement. “We were very pleased to receive feedback and questions from our membership regarding H.R. 5632,” said TIA President, Bob Malerba. “It was extremely helpful to our Government Affairs Committee in making a decision on whether to support the bill.”
(Akron/Tire Review) After weeks of review, TIA has decided to support the tyre fuel efficiency program bill (HR 5632) written by the RMA and recently passed by the House Energy Committee. In making the announcement, TIA said, “The TIA Government Affairs Committee was able to come to consensus after weighing the pros and cons of the legislation.” Separately, SEMA announced earlier this month that it would not support the bill, which calls for NHTSA to create a national tyre fuel efficiency consumer information program that would include a fuel efficiency rating system, requirements for providing such information to tire buyers, and a national consumer tire maintenance consumer education program.
(Akron/Tyre Review) Calling the proposed legislation “unnecessary” and potentially “detrimental to the safety of motorists and passengers,” SEMA has voiced its opposition to HR 5632, the RMA-created bill that calls for the creation of tyre fuel efficiency testing and rating system and accompanying consumer education program. HR 5632 was developed by the RMA last fall, and was passed by the House Energy and Commerce Committee on June 20. Thus far, SEMA has been the only automotive and tyre industry group to make comment on the proposed legislation. At press time, TIA has offered no comment on the bill.

A new category that was added in 2005 for “Historical Contributors,” will be included again in 2006. This category recognizes those individuals who have been out of the industry for at least 20 years or more. These individuals may be retired, deceased, or may have begun their career in the tyre industry and moved on to a different industry.

(Akron/Tire Review) Following up on its announcement at the recent OTR Conference, TIA will host a Tire Privatization Industry Day on 9 March at the Defense Supply Center in Columbus, Ohio. The meeting is in accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure statute, and the meeting will “discuss establishing a performance-based logistics approach for the supply chain management of tyres for the Department of Defense,” said TIA.
