Goodyear to Supply Tyres for Airbus Aircraft

Goodyear has extended a multi-year contract for the supply of aviation tyres to Airbus. Specifically, the extended contract is between Airbus France and Goodyear Nederland BV, a Dutch (Tilburg) company. Goodyear will supply Flight Leader aircraft tyres for the Airbus wide-body family, the A300 and 310 models, as well as Flight Radial and Flight Leader aircraft tyres for the Airbus single-aisle family, the A318, A319, A320 and A321 models. Goodyear has not published any details of how many additional tyres it will supply.

Sumitomo and Hwa Fong Team Up

Duro brand tyre maker Hwa Fong Rubber Industrial has received an order from Sumitomo Rubber for 750,000 ATV tyres annually, according to reports out of Taiwan. Hwa Fong Rubber Industrial’s plant in Thailand will reportedly produce the tyres, writes Tire Review.

Hwa Fong Chairman Steven Chang said the order is a “major achievement” for the company’s ATV tyre business. Deliveries are set to begin in April. Chang said the order is so large that Hwa Fong is investing $13 million to $16 million to add capacity at the Thailand plant.

Mahle Increases Share of Piston Manufacturer

Mahle International has increased its share in Izumi Piston Manufacturing Co, (Thailand) Ltd from 34 to 52 per cent. The company will now operate under Mahle Engine Components Thailand Ltd supplying the Thai automotive industry with 1.8 million pistons per year, predominantly for passenger car and commercial diesel engines. The 370 employees at the Bangkok location currently achieve sales of around 13.1 million euros. With 7 locations, Mahle now has a production capacity of 18 million pistons and is one of the largest suppliers in this sector on the most dynamic growth market. The announcement is retrospectively effective from 1 January.

Sumitomo to Build Radial Plant in Thailand

Sumitomo Rubber Industries has said it will build a radial tyre plant in Thailand, Japan Today has reported. The new factory will be built in an industrial complex 100 kilometres south of Bangkok and will aim to produce 12,000 tyres per day two years after it begins operating in 2006, the report says. The facility will be the company’s third plant in Asia as Sumitomo Rubber already operates factories in Indonesia and China. The company reportedly made the decision to build the new plant in Thailand in response to growing global demand.

Bridgestone Thailand Sales Up 10 per cent

Bridgestone Thailand MD, Tomohiko Yoshimoto, is predicting his company’s truck and bus tyre sales will grow at least 10 per cent, Thailand’s Bangkok post has reported.

Tokai and Mitsubishi Revoke Alliance Agreement

Tokai Carbon and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp have agreed to revoke their agreement to form an Alliance of carbon black businesses. The companies will also withdraw their application for examination by the Fair Trade Commission. The commission had suggested that “the alliance might substantially restrict competition in the Japanese domestic market that is presently short-supplied.”

“We anticipate harsher competition in the carbon black industry in Asia including Japan where aggressive capacity expansions are being made in expectation of rapid growth in the automobile industry, the main consumer of carbon black … We will expand and reinforce our business bases mainly in rapidly growing Thailand and China, as well as accelerate development into high added-value products and new market areas under the basic policy of ‘Powerful R&D,’” the company said in a statement. The stated that it would remain open to the possibility of future alliances.

Bridgestone Makes Tsunami Donation

Bridgestone is to donate 100 million yen (roughly £500,000) to disaster relief aid intended for victims of the recent Indian Ocean Tsunami. The money will be distributed through the Japan Red Cross which will allocate funds at its discretion. The company’s subsidiaries in Thailand, India, Indonesia and Malaysia will make separate contributions to local relief efforts.

Continental and Michelin have also donated to the cause.

Bridgestone sells tyres with unauthorized JIS mark

Tyre manufacturer Bridgestone Corp. has sold some 130,000 tyres printed with the Japan Industrial Standards (JIS) mark even though they were not authorized to do so, Japanese media reported. The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) only allows industrial products to sell with the JIS title after they pass inspections from government officials. After agreeing with the Nagoya-based Inoue Rubber Co. to jointly manufacture tyres in 2000, Bridgestone reportedly invested in Inoue’s subsidiary in Thailand, IRCT, which began producing Bridgestone tyres in Thailand in August 2001.

Yokohama Doubles Thailand Site Area

Yokohama Rubber Co has announced that, by the end of December, it will have purchased 193,327 square metres of land adjacent to Yokohama’s Thailand manufacturing plant. When the newly purchased land is added to the existing site, this means that the Thailand subsidiary will more than double in size, growing to 418,427 square meters. Upon completion of the expansion plans, Yokohama Thailand will have a larger site area than any other Yokohama rubber subsidiary.

Yokohama Establishes Chinese High-pressure Hose Subsidiary

Following the news that it will double the size of its Thailand production plant, Yokohama has also announced that in December it will establish Yokohama Hose & Coupling (Hangzhou) a subsidiary for assembling and selling high-pressure hoses and their metal fittings in China. The subsidiary’s plant will be located in the Economy and Technology Development Zone, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province and commence operation in April 2005. The new company will be capitalized at $350,000.

In China, the demand for construction machinery has been rapidly increasing because of consecutive large-scale projects associated with the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the Shanghai Expo in 2010. High-pressure hoses are a indispensable components for hydraulic devices used in construction machinery. At least for the time being, the new company will concentrate on the OEM business with Japanese construction machinery makers. At the same time, however, the company says it will “proactively conduct market research” in connection with the demand for replacement high-pressure hoses. It also plans to begin local production of metal fittings as soon as possible.

Tenneco Embarks on Restructuring Programme

Tenneco Automotive has announced that it will cut up to 250 salaried positions, about six per cent of its workforce. The majority of the job losses will come from the middle and senior management levels and will be cut from the company’s worldwide workforce. Tenneco describes the redundancies as part of its “global restructuring” programme, which also includes plans to reduce the number of strategic business units to six.

Bridgestone has officially opened a new carbon black plant in Thailand. According to the company, the facility will operate as Bridgestone Carbon Black (Thailand) Co, Ltd, a wholly owned member of the Bridgestone Group.

Myanmar Government Lifts Rubber Export Ban

Myanmar has resumed the export of rubber following an announcement by the government that took effect on 1 September. In a statement released by the country’s trade directorate on 27 August, the government said that domestic production had risen since the ban was put in place at the beginning of the year. According to the statement demand is being met.

Hayes Lemmerz Ventures to Turkey

Hayes Lemmerz International has formed an aluminum wheel joint venture in Manisa, Turkey. The new company, Jantas Aliminyum Jant Sanayi ve Ticaret AS (Jantas Aluminum Wheels), will predominantly serve the Turkish market, but will also deal with other European markets. Production is scheduled to begin at the end of 2005 and it is estimated that it will produce up to 1.5 million wheels annually.

Three companies are involved in the business venture; 40 per cent will be owned by Hayes Lemmerz, 35 per cent by Cromodora Wheels and 25 per cent by Inci Holding A.S. Financial. The terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Sime to Increase Tyre Exports

Malaysian news sources are reporting that Sime Darby Bhd’s tyre division, Continental Sime Tyre Sdn Bhd, is planning to increase its production.
