International Tyres Pushes Sumo Brand Forwards in UK

Tyrexpo Asia Opens World Rubber Summit Debates to Attendees

Attendees to TyrexpoAsia 09 will have the opportunity to join colleagues from the raw materials side of the industry to debate key elements of the International Rubber Study Group’s World Rubber Summit in Singapore next March. The theme for the Summit has now been announced as ‘Global Demand and Supply: Facing the challenges in a rapidly changing world.’

Access to the Summit is a direct result of the collaboration between TyrexpoAsia and the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG), which will see delegates networking and participating in both events next year. IRSG draws its membership from 16 major rubber producing and consuming countries and the European Union, plus over 100 associate members from all kinds of rubber related companies around the world.

Indian Government May Offer Fuel-Efficient Incentives

The Indian government is pondering whether to offer fiscal incentives to popularise fuel-efficient radial tyres for trucks and buses, the country’s news media is reporting. It is thought that the tyres could save automotive fuel worth 200,000,000 rupees (2.4 billion pounds sterling) annually. The package would include exemption from excise duty, a reduction in import duty on machinery and a concessional VAT rate for a ten-year period.

By doing so, the Indian government would hope to increase the manufacturing of radial tyres within India, and boosting its market share to 25 per cent. The current level is between 4 and 5 per cent, an official in department of industrial policy and promotion told The Economic Times. The Automotive Tyre Manufacturers’ Association has demanded the incentive package that would reduce the cost of radial tyres by 30 per cent, added the source.

Tree-Planting Ceremony Held at Yokohama Tire Philippines

Yokohama Rubber’s commitment to all things environmental continued on August 23 with another tree planting ceremony, part of its “Yokohama Forever Forest” project at Yokohama Tire Philippines. The August ceremony was the first staged by the company outside of Japan, and will be followed by further such events in China (Hangzhou Yokohama Tire) in November and Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) in December. In Japan, the entire initial phase of tree planting has been completed except for at Yokohama’s Shinshiro facility, which will host a tree planting ceremony in May 2009.

Thai Port Strike Hits Rubber Shipments

In Thailand, a railway and port strike is hitting the country’s rubber shipments, leading to foreign traders shifting their rubber import sources to Malaysia and Indonesia, say local exporters.

Union members with the State Railway of Thailand started their strike, held in sympathy with anti-government protesters, on 28 August, while Port Authority of Thailand union members brought Klong Toey port in Bangkok to a standstill on Wednesday 3 September. It reopened late on Friday 5, though activity has not yet reached its pre-strike levels.
The total cost and damage of the strike action has yet to be estimated.

Automechanika Malaysia to Promote ASEAN Auto Industry

Automechanika Malaysia (previously known as Automechanika Asia) will take place at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, Malaysia’s most modern event facility between 25 – 29 March 2009. Over the past six years, Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) has extensively promoted this fair as part of the Malaysian Government’s initiative to further develop the automotive industry in Malaysia and across the ASEAN region.

The last fair, held for the first time in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre during 2007 attracted more than 5,480 buyers from 60 countries and regions. There was strong attendance from China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand, supporting the majority of visitors from Malaysia. Altogether in 2007 there were 151 exhibitors from 18 countries and regions at the fair: Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom.

SRF Buys Thai Baroda Tyre Cord Business

SRF Limited, the Indian market leader in technical textiles has reportedly closed the acquisition of Thai Baroda Industries Limited in Rayong, Thailand. As a result of the purchase, made through one of SRF’s international subsidiaries, SRF Group has increased its output to 65000 tonnes per annum, “making it the second largest Nylon 6 tyre cord fabric manufacturer in the world,” according to local news sources.

Thai Baroda Industries Limited has an annual production capacity of approximately 12,000 tonnes of Dipped Nylon Tyre Cord Fabric with annual sales of around $50 million.

Sumitomo Rubber Buys Hwa Fong Thailand Plant

Sumitomo Rubber Industries Inc, has announced its intention to buy Taiwanese tyremaker Hwa Fong Rubber Co’s Thailand plant for 2.36 billion yen (roughly £12.5 million). The factory, which mostly makes tyres for two-wheeled vehicles, has an annual production capacity of 1.2 million units, according to Sumitomo. In addition to two wheel tyres the factory also produced industrial tyre products.

The announcement comes a year after Sumitomo established a new Thai division to sell tyre produced at the company’s new Sumitomo Rubber (Thailand) Co. (SRT) tyre plant in Rayong, Thailand, southeast of Bangkok. Established in May 2005 at the Amata City Industrial Estate, the factory officially began production in December 2006 before being publicly launched in April 2007.

Hayes Lemmerz Increases Adjusted EBITDA Guidance for 2008

On September 4 Hayes Lemmerz International announced it is increasing its fiscal 2008 Adjusted EBITDA guidance as it reported substantially improved Adjusted EBITDA, core operating earnings and liquidity for the second fiscal quarter ended July 31, 2008.

“We are increasing the Company’s Adjusted EBITDA guidance for fiscal 2008 to $225 million to $240 million, up $20 million from prior guidance of $205 million to $220 million,” said Curtis J. Clawson, president, CEO and chairman of the Board. “Capital expenditures have been reduced for the year and are now expected to be between $90 million to $100 million, down $5 million from prior guidance of $95 million to $105 million. We are also affirming the Company’s sales guidance of $2.1 billion to $2.3 billion for fiscal 2008.”

Largest Rally in Asia Sponsored by Yokohama

Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., is to support the largest FIA-certified cross country rally in Asia – the “Asia Cross Country Rally 2008.” The event started yesterday and is scheduled to held until 16 August where it will end in Thailand. The company has sponsored the rally for eight consecutive years, beginning in 2001.

The Asia Cross Country Rally began in 1997 to promote international goodwill and friendship among Asian nations. In contrast to the Dakar Rally, formerly known as the Paris-Dakar Rally, as well as a popular rally in Baja California Peninsula, Mexico, in which driving is primarily across deserts, in the Asia Cross Country Rally vehicles compete over a challenging course of about 2,500 kilometers, including dirt, mud, sand, jungle, mountain roads and river crossings. This year’s course starts in Bangkok and finishes at Phuket, Thailand. Every year more than 30 vehicles are expected to participate in the rally from Asia and Europe.

Advanced ID Opens Asian Office

RFID-maker Advanced ID Corporation has gained approval for the incorporation of a subsidiary in Hong Kong, Advanced ID Asia Pacific Company Limited. The decision took effect on 20 June 2008, meaning Advanced ID has already opened its offices in Hong Kong led by its newly appointed managing director Cherry Lim.

Lim, 42, has spent her entire career working with companies that have innovative technology applications. With positions as chief executive officer and other executive management roles, she has concentrated in the fields of information technology, wireless technologies and integrated circuits. A Hong Kong native fluent in three dialects of Chinese and English, Lim was educated in the United States and received a Bachelors of Science from the University of South Florida, which was followed by an Executive MBA received from the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Thailand’s Vee Rubber to Increase Capacity for Export Markets

Thailand based manufacturer and exporter of car and motorcycle tyres, the Vee Rubber Group, has disclosed plans to invest up to a billion Thai baht (£15.5 million) over a period of several years. According to the Bangkok Post, the company desires to increase its car tyre production output to better serve its export markets.

The first phase of the company’s expansion will take place by the end of 2008, when Vee Rubber’s factory in Samut Sakhon Province will reach a new monthly output level of 200,000 to 300,000 tyres per month, up from the current monthly output of 100,000 car and light truck tyres. Reaching this capacity will require an investment of 400-500 million baht (£6.2-7.8 million). The remaining money will, over the next two to three years, be used to further boost the factory’s output to between 600,000 and 700,000 tyres per month. All of the added tyre output will be for export, primarily to Asia, Africa and North and South America.

Yokohama Establishes Thailand Sales Office

Only weeks after announcing the start of operations at its new Yokohama Asia facility in Thailand, the Japanese tyremaker has announced the establishment in May of Yokohama Tire Sales (Thailand) Co., Ltd. This new tyre sales company, also based in Bangkok, will begin trading in July 2008 and has been fully capitalised by Yokohama Rubber at a cost of 200 million baht (£3 million).

Yokohama reports that sales of its branded tyres, particularly in the high performance passenger car tyre segment, are rapidly increasing. Previously Yokohama Rubber sold its tyres nationwide through local tyre distributors. The company says, however, it has become necessary to establish its own tyre sales company so as to further expand sales of passenger car tyres and also strengthen sales of truck/bus tyres and light truck tyres that are manufactured by Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand).

SRF Buys Thai Tyre Cord Company

SRF Limited has acquired Thailand-based Thai Baroda Industries Limited (TBIL) for 1 billion rupees (£11.8 million). According to the Calcutta News, TBIL has an annual production capacity of 12,000 tonnes of dipped nylon tyre cord fabric. Ashish Bharat Ram, managing director SRF Limited, said in an official statement: “Post financial restructuring and takeover of the company management, we are confident that we will able to turn the company in very short time.”
