Exports Now More than Half of Deestone Production

Initially established in 1978 by a group of Thai industrialists, Deestone Limited began life as a producer of tyres and tubes for the industrial and agricultural sectors. In 1994 the company diversified, and along with adding scooter and bicycle tyres to its product portfolio, at this time Deestone also initiated a stronger focus on the export of its specialty industrial tyres and inner tubes.

Currently, more than half of the Deestone Group’s products are exported, with markets including the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Denmark, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Egypt, Israel and Jordan. The company’s total asset base exceeds 500 million baht (£10 million) and approximately 3,000 workers are on its payroll. Deestone currently operates three manufacturing facilities in Thailand, with a combined capacity of 100,000 tons.

Bridgestone Opens New Thailand Test Track

January 22 marked the official opening of Bridgestone’s all-new proving ground in Thailand. It is less than two years since Thai Bridgestone Co. Ltd received official from the Thailand Board of Investment to go ahead with construction at the site in Ayutthaya, some 70 kilometres north of Bangkok, and in that time a range of facilities have been built on the 53 hectare site. Amenities include a 3.3 kilometre oval track and a 5-hectare site for testing control, balancing and handling. A wet performance section and a surface course featuring road conditions encountered in various locations around the world has also been constructed to facilitate the development and testing of tyres for other markets.

New Australian Pirelli Motorcycle Tyre Distributor Named

Australian based motorcycle parts and accessories importer and distributor Link International has been granted Australian distribution rights to the Pirelli motorcycle tyre range. Pirelli thus joins a product portfolio that includes Thailand’s Vee Rubber plus a number of motorcycle component brands including Motul Oils, RK Chains, Ferodo Brake Pads, JT Sprockets, Excel Rims and Polisport Plastics. Distribution of the Pirelli motorcycle range begins on February 2, 2009.

Malaysia Cutting Rubber Exports 5% in 2009

Cuts in rubber exports have begun in the world’s third-largest rubber producing nation. Malaysia’s Plantations Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin confirmed that the government’s plan to reduce rubber exports by around five per cent this year is underway, and it now remains to be seen whether the measure will bring prices out of the doldrums.

“For the first quarter, Malaysia will reduce rubber exports by 22,000 tonnes,” said Chin. “For the whole of 2009, it will be 57,050 tonnes.” Last year Malaysia exported 1.1 million tonnes of rubber. Along with Thailand and Indonesia – the number one and two global rubber producers – Malaysia has committed to removing approximately 915,000 tonnes of natural rubber from the world market. The three countries, which comprise the International Rubber Consortium (IRCo), also say that a reduction of up to 1,345,000 tonnes is possible, but only if prices further weaken.

Yokohama Forever Forest Tree Planting Carried Out in Thailand

Work on Yokohama Rubber’s “Yokohama Forever Forest” project, started in 2007, is ongoing, and last December the company staged a tree-planting ceremony at its Yokohama Tire Manufacturing (Thailand) Co., Ltd. facility. This is the third location outside of Japan to receive the Forever Forest treatment, following the Philippines and China in August and November 2008 respectively.

Automechanika Returns to Malaysia in March

Approximately 5,000 visitors are expected to attend the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre between March 25 and 28 for the sixth Automechanika Malaysia exhibition. The trade fair, formerly known as Automechanika Asia, is the only automotive parts and aftermarket trade fair organised in collaboration with Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation and is considered by many to be the leading automotive parts and aftermarket trade event in the ASEAN market. Exhibitors from 14 countries and regions including Australia, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Kingdom have confirmed their attendance. A total of 150 exhibitors are expected to take part in the biennial event.

Bridgestone Concludes Anti-Vibration Rubber JV Agreement

Bridgestone has concluded an agreement with India’s Sundaram Industries to establish a joint venture to produce anti-vibration rubber for use in vehicles. The Tamil Nadu based company is a member of India’s Prominent TVS Group, and a leader in the field of anti-vibration rubber in that country. Bridgestone first concluded a technical assistance agreement in anti-vibration rubber for automobiles business with Sundaram Industries in 1996, and the two companies have built a close relationship over the years. Bridgestone believes the joint venture will enable the production and sale of high-quality products boasting technical superiority at a competitive cost in the expanding Indian market, and lead to an enhanced global supply chain.

Bigwheel OTR Reports 57-inch Retread Breakthrough

Big Wheel OTR (BWOTR) is laying claim to being the world’s first retreader to successfully pre-cure retread 4000R57-sized OTR tyres. “We take great pride in the appearance and quality of our pre-cured retread, because it speaks of the expert skill and infinite care we take in ensuring that these liners perform as promised”, declared managing director Albert Ngok.

BWOTR’s successful retreading of 4000R57-sized OTR tyre reflects the company’s determination to provide solutions to large OTR tyre shortage. To gauge the tyres performance, BWOTR enlisted the help of its Australian distributor, Earthmover Tyres International (Earthmover).

Falling Prices a Focus at Rubber Organisation Meeting

Falling prices for natural rubber will be a key theme at the meeting of the Association of Natural Rubber Producing Countries (ANRPC) on November 26 to 28. Representatives from India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam will discuss price trends and supply-side measures in detail, reports Sajen Peter, chairman of India’s Rubber Board.

According to the International Rubber Study Group, the European Union is currently the third largest regional consumer of natural and synthetic rubber. In 2007, Europe’s consumption of natural rubber reached 1.373 million tonnes, 14 per cent of global natural rubber consumption. The Singapore based organisation notes that European consumption increased 1.7 per cent since 2005, a much smaller increase that the 10.9 per cent growth in global consumption. For synthetic rubber, the IRSG reports the EU consumption in 2007 to be 2.616 million tonnes, a 20 per cent share of global consumption.

China Pledges Thai Rubber Imports Won’t Decrease in 2009

Global number one natural rubber consumer China has pledged it will import as much natural rubber from Thailand next year as it has in 2008, despite feeling the impact of the global economic slowdown. Thailand deputy minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Teerachai Saenkaew stated this on November 18, elaborating that he has discussed natural rubber cooperation during his recent meeting with China’s vice agricultural minister Niu Dun.

Yokohama to Build JV Rubber Processing Factory in Thailand

On November 12 Yokohama Rubber announced its intention to cooperate with Teck Fu Joint Venture Co., Ltd. to build a joint-venture natural rubber processing factory in southern Thailand’s Surat Thani Province. Teck Fu is a subsidiary company of Teck Bee Hang Co., Ltd., a natural rubber processing company in Thailand. Yokohama Rubber’s decision to operate its own factory stems from its aim for an assured stable supply and quality of natural rubber, the company says.

Lanxess and Cheng Shin Sign Long-Term Supply Agreement

The Performance Butadiene Rubbers business unit belonging to Lanxess AG and Taiwanese tyre manufacturer Cheng Shin Rubber have put their cooperation on a firm footing with the conclusion of a long-term supply agreement. Over the next four years Lanxess will supply solution SBR and polybutadiene rubber to Cheng Shin, and the company plans to nearly double the volume of high-performance rubber it supplies over this period.

Thai Manufacturers Face Quarantine Difficulties

Manufacturers in Thailand are seeking a clarification from the country’s Industry Ministry over the status of a substance used to produce tyres. At present some 500 million baht (£9.3 million) worth of 100 per cent pure sulphur has been quarantined by the Customs Department, say the manufacturers, as the product has been ruled illegal. To gain access to the sulphur, the manufacturers claim they must pay penalties of two billion baht.

Bridgestone Opens Carbon Black Plant in Mexico

On October 17, Mexico Carbon Manufacturing SA DE CV (MXCB), a wholly owned member of the Bridgestone Group, officially opened its new carbon black production facility in Altamira, Mexico. Output from the new plant, which is forecast to be approximately 35,000 tons per annum, will be supplied to Bridgestone’s tyre factories in North America as well as Central and South America.

The MXCB operated 430,000 square metre facility, which employs around 100 workers, is the Bridgestone Group’s third plant dedicated to the production and supply of carbon black. The other two are located in Japan and Thailand.
