The European Commission has approved 3.2 billion euros of battery research and development support under EU State aid rules. The funding comes as the result of an Important Project of Common European interest (IPCEI) application jointly notified by Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden to support research and innovation in the common European priority area of batteries.
The Research Institutes of Sweden (RISE) and Swedish oil company Nynas AB are launching a joint research project aimed at developing a process for refining the oil that is recovered from end-of-life tyres using Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB’s recycling method. Through refining, the oil can be used for more than fuel, which both increases the value of the recovered oil and reduces the environmental impact.

The deadlines set out in two of the memoranda of understandings signed between Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) and firms based in Denmark, the USA and Canada last year may have passed, yet Enviro says this “will not affect the outcome of the negotiations or the possibility of opening the various plants.” The Swedish company still expects to establish joint venture tyre recycling plants with all three partners in the not too distant future.
Swedish touring car racer Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky has been selected to test the new tyres Continental is developing for the Extreme E rally series. Åhlin-Kottulinsky, the first and to-date only woman to win a race in the TCR Scandinavia Touring Car Championship, will lend her talents towards the development of tyres for what Continental calls “the most extreme racing series the world has ever seen.”
Northvolt has raised US$1 billion of capital to build Europe’s first homegrown gigafactory for lithium-ion battery cells – Northvolt Ett, in Skellefteå, Sweden. At the same time, in cooperation with the Volkswagen Group, the company also announced plans to establish a second gigafactory with an intended location in Lower Saxony, Germany. The news of both factories was announced on 12 June 2019.

The Volkswagen Group and further European partners are joining forces to form the European Battery Union (EBU) with a view to forging ahead with battery research throughout Europe. The new consortium is to be led by the Volkswagen Group and the Swedish battery producer Northvolt. The joint research activities of the European Battery Union will cover the entire battery value stream – from raw materials through cell technology to recycling. The prime objective is to accumulate much broader know-how on battery cell production.
Pyrolysis oil derived from end-of-life tyres can be used as fuel. That is the conclusion of a reported produced by RISE (the EU Research, Innovation and Science Policy Experts Group) along with Enviro and Ragn-Sells as a result of research that kicked off in October 2017.
Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB has signed a memorandum of understanding with EE-TDF Cleveland, LLC, a US tyre-recycling company. The agreement remains in effect for six months, has an option to extend, and opens up opportunities for additional joint venture plants with an annual recycling capacity of 30,000 tonnes tyres.
Lighting and electronics specialist Hella has concluded the sale of the Danish and Polish wholesale businesses FTZ and Inter-Team. After approval by the antitrust authorities responsible, both companies were transferred to the Swedish wholesaler Mekonomen. Subject to the terms of the transaction, the purchase price amounts to 395 million euro.
Dutch tyre wholesaler the Van den Ban Group has bought Sweden’s Amring AB. The Gothenburg-based tyre and wheel wholesaler and retailer had belonged to Pon Tyre Group since 2008. With this acquisition, Van den Ban increases its presence in Scandinavia. Further details regarding the transaction are not known at this stage
From studs to autonomous driving technology and including the latest winter tyres available, Continental AG has demonstrated a range of innovations designed to move the company (and motorists) towards its Vision Zero goal. Indeed, “our goal is to achieve zero road traffic accidents”, Conti CEO Elmer Degenhart is on the record as saying, summarising what Continental is aiming to do.
A leading tyre manufacturer has placed a first order on Swedish tyre pyrolysis firm Enviro’s recycled carbon black (EnviroCB) for immediate delivery.
“Initially the order volume is small, but is expected to increase significantly over time. The customer is a global manufacturer of tyres and rubber applications and this order relates to industrial tyres”, says Thomas Sörensson, CEO of Enviro.

The award is a bronze 2017 Epica Award in the online campaigns – automotive category, and was given to Hankook Tire Sweden for a short video highlighting the over-representation of men, and younger men in particular, in Sweden’s road accident statistics. The campaign is titled Kör som en kvinna, which in English means ‘Drive like a woman’.
