‘SUV of the Year’ Rides on Goodyear Tyres

Goodyear welcomed the news that the redesigned 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee has received yet another accolade for its “versatility and style,” as its tyres will again be fitted on all models of the new vehicle.

The vehicle recently won the title of “2005 SUV of the Year” by ‘Truckin’s SUV,’ an enthusiast magazine. According to the magazine, the Grand Cherokee stood out due to its “refined ride, off-road performance, and high-feature content coupled with notable quality, excellent road manners, and a warm and inviting interior.”

Fourth MIRS Line For Pirelli

Pirelli has begun to install a fourth MIRS production line at its US factory in Rome, Georgia. Production will be in full swing by June 2005 and the new line will produce predominantly Scorpion Zero SUV tyres, including the new 26 inch tyre, recently shown at the SEMA exhibition. Rome will become Pirelli’s main source of performance SUV tyres, with all of its 4×4 output being tyres of 22 inches or larger.

Cooper Names New SUV/LT Tyre Development Manager

Cooper Tire and Rubber Company has named Marcus A Hancock as manager of sport utility vehicle/light truck tyre development. His responsibilities include managing and leading the development of new SUV and light truck products for the North American market.

Originally from England, Hancock joined Cooper-Avon Tyre at Melksham, in 1989 as a tyre design and development technical assistant. He has also worked as both a design engineer and a senior design engineer at Cooper-Avon. Mr Hancock has also been a senior development engineer of performance tyres at the Cooper tyre plant in Findlay, Ohio.

Continental Wins Chrysler Contract

Continental AG has reportedly won the “lion’s share” of a large order to supply Chrysler with its ESP anti-rollover system for (SUVs), according to the German automotive supplier. The deal means Continental will now supply all of the ‘big three’ US carmakers after winning an order from General Motors, said company spokesman Hannes Boekhoff.

Toyo’s Operating Income Doubles

Publishing its first half 2005 results, Toyo has reported that its operating income has rocketed 120.8 per cent, compared with the same period last year. In the period ended 30 September, the company’s operating income demonstrated the most marked increase growing from 1.893 billion to 4.18 billion yen (£21.4 million). Toyo achieved a 6.7 per cent increase in net sales rising from 120 billion to 128 billion yen (£657 million).

One explanation for the rapid ascent of the figures is the company’s increase of UHP and SUV sales. Sales of these high margin products have gone up 25.9 per cent, with tyre sales in general improving by 8.7 per cent. In Europe the company says that this has been largely down to favourable sales and marketing of new products including its Proxes T1R.

Goodyear Wrangler Selected for 2006 Hummer H3

Goodyear has been chosen to supply tyres for the latest Hummer, the 2006 H3 model, which is due to arrive at dealerships in spring 2005. With its off-road capabilities the new H3 will be positioned among the mid size SUV segment. According to Hummer, the H3 will also provide “the refinement, comfort and convenience required for on-road driving.”

Toyo Tire Launches US Construction Project

Toyo Tire & Rubber Co officially “broke ground” this week for its new manufacturing plant and warehousing facility in Bartow County, Georgia. State officials and local dignitaries witnessed the event which marks the official start of construction of the company’s first wholly owned North American tyre manufacturing facility.

The 1.03 million square feet building will be built on a 150-acre site and will initially be able to produce 2 million passenger, light truck and SUV tyres annually. Toyo has invested $150 million into the products so far.

The general assembly of Point S in France has announced the appointment of Olivier Steier as its new president. Mr Steier succeeds Jean-Piere Legros who decided not to stand for re-election.

New Michelin winter tyres in North America

Michelin dealers in the USA have been introduced to the new winter tyre range from Michelin. Michelin(R) X-Ice(TM) and Michelin(R) Latitude(TM) X-Ice(TM) winter tyres to help them overcome ice- and snow-covered roads. Michelin’s newest winter products are designed to improve braking, traction and handling for passenger cars and vans, light trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV) in snowy and icy conditions. Authorised Michelin dealers in the United States will begin taking deliveries in July of the Michelin X-Ice in 39 sizes for passenger cars and the Michelin Latitude X-Ice in ten additional sizes for light trucks and SUVs.

25″ tyre from Pirelli

Pirelli has introduced a new tyre, aimed specifically at the Hummer H2 tuner market, the Pirelli Scorpion Zero 315/40 VR25 XL. As well as looking good, Pirelli says that the XL rating means that the tyre can safely take the weight of vehicles such as the massive Hummer SUV. The standard OE size tyre for the Hummer is 315/70 R17.

US Consumer Magazine Rates Pirelli As “Best Buys”

“Consumers Digest”, a US magazine, has chosen Pirelli tyres as “best buys” in three categories. The P6000 Sport Veloce was named a premium BB in the All-Season category, the P400 was an economy BB in the Touring category and the Scorpion Zero was an economy BB in the light truck/SUV section.

60,000 Mile Warranty For Light Truck Tyre

In the USA, Michelin is to introduce a new Uniroyal light truck/SUV tyre this September, which carries a 60,000 mile treadwear warranty. Called the Laredo Cross Country, the new tyre will be available in 14 sizes to fit both US-made and imported vehicles.

Superior Industries Gains Mitsubishi Business

From the beginning of May, Superior Industries has been supplying Mitsubishi Motors North America with three types of cast aluminium wheels for the 2004 model Endeavour SUV. This expands Superior’s OE business even further, with the company supplying a number of auto manufacturers, from Audi through to VW.

Formula 4×4: Niche Marketing

Back in 1989 the market researchers were telling the motor industry and the press that the boom in 4×4 vehicles had peaked. Anyone who wanted a 4×4 already had one and the market would stagnate before declining. How wrong they were. What they failed to recognise was the change in the demographics of the market and the complete change in the image of the 4×4, which, nowadays, we are driven to call a Sports Utility vehicle (SUV). The market is still growing and every vehicle manufacturer in the world has an SUV range, or is planning an SUV range.The growth in the market has been less about the development of the grass roots off road vehicle than the emergence of the SUV as a fashion and lifestyle statement. There are still those who use their 4×4 for the purpose for which it was designed, either work or leisure, but the phenomenal growth has been in the luxury end of the market where the vehicles may look as if they are designed to tackle the wild mountain tracks, but will be lucky if they clip the kerb in the supermarket car park. The dilemma for the tyre dealer was that the vast majority of tyres for 4×4 vehicles were originally designed for agricultural use and, though, moderately capable in the mud, were less than well suited to road use. As the market developed, the availability of increasingly road biased tyres increased. As the SUV market grew there also developed a growing demand for higher and higher performance road tyres. Today the advent of the BMW M5 and now the Porsche Cayenne and the continued road refinement of the Range Rover has set an unprecedented demand for high and ultra-high performance road tyres aimed at SUVs. Tread patterns, widths and profiles that wouldn’t look amiss on a sports car now adorn vehicles which have a heritage which harks back to the Willy’s Jeep.
