US thieves steal $200,000 worth of tyres

Recent thefts of tyres from parked trucks in the UK have been outdone in terms of scale and audacity by a crime that took place in the US state of Florida last week. Tire Review reports that a group of thieves stole two semi-trailers full of passenger, performance and light truck/SUV tyres from behind a tyre dealership in Fort Lauderdale in the early hours of July 27. Unlike their British counterparts, who loaded tyres into their own vehicle or vehicles before making a getaway, the US criminals saved considerable time and effort by bringing their own Freightliner tractor unit to remove the trailers from the store’s loading dock.

Australian Consumer magazine recommends Nexen CP661

Australian consumer test magazine “Choice” recently recommended the Nexen CP661 summer tyre as its “Choice to buy”. The recommendation was given to only six of the 18 175/65 R14 tyres tested. “Choice”, a well known consumer magazine in Australia, selected a common tyre size which is fitted to many compact cars.

Nexen ramping up European SUV marketing with 28” HP tyre

Korean tyre manufacturer Nexen Tyre has announced an increase in its activities within the European luxury SUV segment, with a range of high performance products including the Roadian HP in the size 325/35R28. This is the largest Roadian HP tyre, specially developed for tuned SUVs or high-performance recreational vehicles, such as the Car Film Components Hummer presented at the beginning of May the the Tuning World Bodensee 2011 show in Germany.

Hankook Tire America confirms warehouse shift

Hankook Tire America has confirmed it is opening a new warehouse in New Jersey, a 400,000-square-foot (37,000 square metre) facility in Dayton that will replace its current Edison centre in the same state. US industry publication Tire Review first reported on the new warehouse last week after real estate company CoStar Group announced the deal to local media. Hankook said the new warehouse can handle some 610,000 passenger, light truck/SUV and medium truck tyres, a 70 per cent capacity increase over its older location. The new warehouse is scheduled to open later this year.

Taiwan’s Federal Tyre has announced that its latest Couragia F/X asymmetrical tyre for high performance LSUV vehicles will officially be offered at Neta Tyre Service & Sales at the beginning of May 2011. Neta has been a family-owned and operated business in Queensland for over 40 years. Matt Bell appointed Pirelli UK product training manager

Pirelli UK has announced the appointment of Matt Bell as product training manager for Pirelli UK; a new role aimed at training people from both inside and outside the company about aspects of the business. Bell will design training packages for Pirelli sales teams, customers and dealers to give them the product and corporate knowledge needed to carry out their roles in the most effective way, a company statement says.

Ford selects Hankook for new Explorer

Hankook Tire has signed a contract with Ford to supply its premium Optimo H426 tyres for the 2011 Ford Explorer, which has been named the North American truck of the year. “Hankook Tire will come closer to customers in North America with its contract for the most popular SUV in North America, the Ford Explorer,” the company stated in a press release. Kumho USA to raise prices on 1 March

Kumho Tire USA is raising its prices on some of its rannge by an as-yet undisclosed amount on 1 March. Kumho said increases will affect all passenger, light truck/SUV and medium truck tyres. The company concluded its statement by saying the exact details of the increase "will be provided to our clients in the near future.”

Toyo Scores OE Fitment on Audi Q7

Toyo Tire has announced that its Toyo Open Country W/T tyre has been chosen by Audi as original equipment tyres for its Q7. Commencing in January 2011, the Open Country W/T (AO) in size 255/55R18 109H will be fitted to the Q7, also supplied on 18” rims where winter tyres are ordered.

Cooper Increases US Car, Light Truck Prices

Cooper Tire & Rubber Co. is raising prices on all of its passenger and light truck/SUV tires as of 1 February, reports Tire Review. The increase will reach a maximum of 2.5 per cent, the company told dealers.

Federal Adds to Couragia SUV Tyre Line

In the US, Federal has added the Couragia F/X to its Couragia SUV tyre line. The new tyre is designed to deliver steering precision, powerful controllability, long mileage and a comfortable ride, the tyremaker said. The asymmetrical Couragia F/X features a wide and stability-improved footprint; a scuff rib that strengthens the sidewall and protects the rim; and an aggressive tread pattern with stiff, interconnected blocks, Federal said.

Goodyear Releases New North American Winter Range

Goodyear has introduced its first dedicated winter tyre for the SUV and light truck segments in North America. Called the Ultra Grip Ice WRT, the new range is offered in 16 popular sizes – 10 passenger sizes in S speed rating and standard load rating, and six LT sizes in Q speed rating and E load rating.

Continental Tops Evo Tyre Test for Second Time in 2010

Continental has won evo magazine’s tyre test for the second time this year. The brand came top of the test on the front wheel drive Renaultsport Megane 250 Cup. The high performance car magazine tested nine of the most popular brands on the market including Continental’s new ContiSportContact 5 P in the popular 235/35 R19 size.

Referring to the Continental tyre’s performance the magazine said: “It set the standard in many of the tests, taking an almost clean sweep in the dry tests and rating very highly in the wet tests, too. It also garnered praise for its feel and abilities in the subjective tests.”

Bridgestone Ends Dayton Truck Tyres

Tire Review reports that Bridgestone Americas' Dayton brand medium truck tyres are no more. The manufacturer announced yesterday that it would discontinue sales of Dayton brand medium truck radials as of 1 January, 2011. The tyre-maker said it anticipates it will burn off its remaining Dayton inventory by the end of this year, but did not say when it stopped production of the tyres. The move, Bridgestone Americas said, does not impact production and sales of its Dayton branded passenger and light truck/SUV lines.
