Long before the topic became a priority in the corporate world, the frequent disposal of tyres in good condition caught the attention of Vipal’s founder, Vicencio Paludo who was at the time owner of a fuel station in Nova Prata, in southern Brazil. This prompted him to acquire machines to retread used tyres. Vipal’s business was consolidated to avoid waste and the generation of residues.
Although Giti Tire will concentrate on its dual electric vehicle (EV) approach and sustainability at The Tire Cologne 2024, it’ll also find the time to unveil new tyres for the passenger car, light truck and heavy truck markets at its exhibition space (Hall 7.1, Stand: C030 D039).
Continental has published a White Paper exploring the basic structure, technical background and overall landscape of the commercial vehicle tyre market. Published in full colour and available as a digital download, the 40-page White Paper “offers extensive information on the fundamentals of tyre design, tyre development and tyre production.”
Within the framework of an eight-year offtake agreement, UK-based tyre pyrolysis specialist Circtec will annually supply energy company bp with up to 75,000 tonnes of fuel and feedstock recovered from end-of-life tyres. Circtec will process these tyres at a plant it will set up in The Netherlands. In support of this offtake agreement, bp is providing Circtec a €12.5 million debt finance facility to contribute to the capex for expanding this plant into a commercial-scale operation.
The first round of the FIA World Endurance Championship in Qatar marked LMGT3’s arrival to the championship, with Goodyear as the exclusive tyre supplier. Through the introduction of its new LMGT3 tyre specification and enhancements to logistical support, Goodyear claims to have aligned with WEC and FIA’s sustainability goals, driving efforts towards a cleaner and more environmentally responsible sport.
Sailun Group Co. Ltd has released an English-language version of its 2023 Sustainability Report. The 81-page document is the company’s 11th annual Sustainability Report and covers a range of subject areas, including sustainability management, social, environmental and governance.
Yuan Zhongxue, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Rubber and Tire and honorary chairman of the Sailun Group, announced sustainable development goals (SDGs) for the tyre maker during the recent 2024 China Rubber Conference. The SDGs aim to progressively increase the utilisation of sustainable materials in tyre production, targeting 40 per cent by 2030 and striving for 100 per cent by 2050. Additionally, Sailun aims to reduce per tyre energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30 per cent, compared to 2022 levels, by 2030.
The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company have commenced a second phase of their strategic collaboration. Goodyear says this next step in the two parties’ joint work will not only leverage previous achievements but will also “delve into new technological avenues.”
Ticket sales for the Tire Cologne got underway about a month ago at the end of March. Around the same time, Koelnmesse, the organisers of arguably the European tyre business’s largest exhibition published its exhibitor list. Now Koelnmesse is previewing what visitors to The Tire Cologne will be able to experience when the show runs between 4 and 6 June 2024.
Cars equipped with Toyo Proxes slick race tyres containing sustainable materials have own two of first four Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie races. The Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVOs of team Toyo Tires with Ring Racing were victorious in the first rounds of the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie in the SP10 class as well as in 24H Nürburgring Qualifier races.
The international automotive supplier Forvia Hella has received the John Deere Award in the sustainability category. The leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery honours Forvia Hella for its heat recovery system at the Großpetersdorf site in Austria. The system saves around 175,000 kilowatt hours of natural gas per year and therefore around 32,000 kilograms of CO2. The award was presented at the John Deere European Supplier Conference in March 2024 in Mannheim, Germany.
Nokian Tyres has published its Sustainability Report 2023. This document, which has been prepared in accordance with the GRI Standards and is assured by an independent third party, describes Nokian Tyres’ sustainability actions and results in 2023 in terms of product liability and safety as well as environmental and social responsibility.
Giti Tire has announced the appointment of Dr Pang Chong Hau as the company’s Chief Sustainability Officer. Dr Pang is based at Giti’s global headquarters in Singapore and brings a wealth of experience in sustainability to his new position, having led the development of sustainable procurement frameworks and initiated key green projects in his previous roles.
Levidian Nanosystems has presented a prototype truck tyre made with a butadiene rubber tread compound containing its net zero graphene, and reports that this compound “has been shown to deliver significant improvements in the mechanical and dynamic properties of the tyre.” The Cambridge-based firm is confident such tyres can deliver considerable fuel and CO2 savings.
CDP Carbon Management Sector Honors for Hankook Tire & Technology (Hankook Tire). The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) Korea Committee hosted its Climate Change and Water Security Awards on 13 March. Based upon the CDP Climate Change Response Project’s evaluation of more than 23,000 global companies, the Committee acknowledged Hankook Tire within the Consumer Discretionary awards category. The tyre maker achieved an A- rating in the evaluation, one of only 25 Korean companies achieving this distinction.
