The Movin’On 2018 sustainable mobility summit took place at the end of May and the start of this month, and during the event organiser Michelin announced what it calls an “ambitious plan” – to ensure all of its tyres will be manufactured using 80 per cent sustainable materials within 30 years, and that 100 per cent of all tyres will be recycled.
According to Michelin, owner of Lehigh Technologies since October 2017, the Micronised Rubber Powders (MRP) production facility being set up by Lehigh Spain will begin operations in summer 2018. The plant, located in Murrillo del Fruto, Spain, is the product of a joint venture project between Lehigh Technologies and Hera Holding.
Gabor Kakuk, a Hella employee, sparked a recycling policy change after taking matters into his own hands to further improve the company’s green credentials. Every month in the UK, more than a million tonnes of plastic – particularly plastic bottles and cups – from homes, industry and businesses are used and disposed of in landfill, remaining in the environment for many years, often taking up to 500 years to decompose.
Nokian Tyres has been selected for Dow Jones’ DJSI World sustainability index. With a total sustainability score nearly twice as high as the industry average, Nokian Tyres significantly improved its results in the 2017 assessment. Nokian Tyres’ score of 78 points was only one point behind the industry’s best company globally.
In its Sustainability Report 2016, Bridgestone Corporation shares that last year its tyres’ rolling resistance was on average 13 per cent lower than in 2005. The company also achieved a 29 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions per net sales from operations and products’ after-use during this timeframe, as well as a 28.5 per cent reduction in water intake per unit and a 31 per cent improvement in resource productivity.
General Motors has committed itself to sourcing original equipment tyres produced from sustainable natural rubber. The vehicle manufacturer views this step as an industry first and says its aim is to help “drive the industry toward net-zero deforestation and uphold human and labour rights.”
Versalis, a European producer in the polymers and elastomers industry, and bioengineering firm Genomatica’s joint venture project to create renewable butadiene has been presented with Tire Technology International’s Environmental Achievement of the Year award. The companies embarked on the long-term project to address concerns around potential butadiene shortages and price increases. In a demonstration run in 2016, several kilograms of renewable butadiene were prepared starting from commercial sugars, with polymerisation tests showing no differences between the polybutadiene prepared from fossil or renewable feedstock.
The ecological car firm Riversimple Movement employs 23 at an R&D centre in Llandrindod Wells, mid Wales and is currently crowd funding for their Rasa (Latin for clean slate) to match a €2m EU grant. The striking, gull-wing vehicle is capable of travelling 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen, with 20 prototypes taking to the UK roads on a 12 month public trial in 2017 before the full production vehicle arrives late 2018. The Rasa is capable of 0-60mph in 10 seconds with a top speed of 60mph, and refuels in only three minutes.
Since 2009, the base year for the mid-to-long term sustainability goals that Pirelli set for itself, the Italian tyre maker reports it has made ‘significant progress’ in the realization of its green performance goals. Indeed, Pirelli reports that it has improved sustainability across all its indicators.
The Michelin Group has once again been commended for its commitment to sustainable development. The latest Dow Jones Sustainability World Index ranking (DJSI survey by RobecoSAM), gives Michelin a score of 87/100, up four points, which takes it to first place in the original equipment sector. Michelin ranks first in its sector in relation to 12 of the 18 assessment criteria used by the survey in the three major CSR fields: social aspects, environmental aspects and societal aspects.
New figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) confirm the growing strength and vitality of the UK automotive industry and its ascendancy as a major global player. SMMT’s 16th annual Sustainability Report confirms the sector is breaking new records, with turnover hitting an all-time high of £69.5 billion in 2014. Manufacturing output, vehicle sales, jobs and export values also grew, while the environmental impact from vehicle production has been reduced dramatically.
Michelin has published its 2014 Annual and Sustainable Development Report. Titled ‘Open Minded’, the 94-page report pays homage to the tyre maker’s innovations and achievements. It also outlines the key Michelin financial indicators and the new organisational structure set up last year. The report also lists Michelin’s ‘Ambitions 2020’ goals.

For the second consecutive year Pirelli reports that it is the only tyre company present in the ”Global Compact 100” sustainability index, launched last year by UN Global Compact in collaboration with Sustainalytics.
For the eighth consecutive year, Pirelli has been nominated the world leader in the ATX Auto Components sector of the Dow Jones Sustainability indices, with a score of 85/100 compared to a sector average of 48/100. The results of the annual Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) review were announced on 11 September by S&P Dow Jones Indices, one of the world’s largest providers of financial market indices, and RobecoSAM, the investment specialist focused exclusively on sustainability investing.
