RAC Foundation to Lead NTDA Tyre Ageing Campaign

The RAC Foundation, one of the best-known and most influential motoring organisations in the UK, has agreed to lend its support to a tyre safety campaign initiated by the NTDA to highlight the potential dangers of over-age tyres. The thrust of the campaign will focus on the need for drivers of older, low mileage vehicles to have their tyres checked for signs of age-related deterioration. Various cases reported in news sources in the UK and overseas, testify that tyre failures have resulted in fatal and serious injury accidents in the UK and overseas.

Unipart Top In Workshop Survey

Unipart Automotive has been voted the most recommended brand for braking in an independent aftermarket survey about brand perception that ranked Unipart brakes as the number one choice by Workshops. The survey listed six leading aftermarket brands and asked respondents what braking brand they would recommend to their customers for fitment on a vehicle; overwhelmingly 59 per cent stated the Unipart brand. GiPA, the aftermarket intelligence organisation, conducted the poll and surveyed workshops including independent garages, auto centres, national and independent fast fits.

Unipart Automotive has launched an advertising campaign to raise awareness of its braking range and the fact that all service products, supplied by Unipart Automotive, have an Original Equipment matching quality guarantee and meet the requirements of Block Exemption. This allows independent garages to carry out servicing and maintenance on a car without invalidating the vehicle manufacturer’s warranty, provided the garage follows the vehicle assembler’s schedules.

Michelin Kicks Off Tyre Pressure Campaign at Eurotunnel

Following on from its 2007 campaign, Michelin’s latest “Fill up with Air” roadshow kicks off at the Folkestone Eurotunnel Terminal on 1-2 July. Motorists travelling to France passing through the terminal will have the chance to get a free tyre pressure check and advice on their tyres from Michelin technicians before setting out on their journey.

This Folkestone event is the start of a UK-wide roadshow designed to educate motorists on the importance of correct tyre pressures. Over two days in 2007, a similar Michelin survey at Eurotunnel concluded that 83 per cent of vehicles checked by the technicians had under-inflated tyres and a staggering 63 per cent were dangerously under-inflated.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Encourages Participation in Road Risk Survey

Britain’s largest independent fast-fit operator, Kwik-Fit Fleet, is participating in a major occupational road risk management survey in conjunction with RoadSafe, the organisation responsible for managing the Government’s ‘Driving for Better Business’ programme. The survey was officially launched at the Fleet Business Show at the Business Design Centre, London on April 29. The survey’s aim is to gain information on what actions senior managers with responsibility for fleet operations and the use of privately-owned cars on business have taken to reduce their organisations’ risk exposure in the light of the implementation of the month’s Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act in early April.

Mike Wise, head of Kwik-Fit Fleet, said: “The importance of companies managing occupational road risk has continued to increase in recent years. As a business we undertake hundreds of thousands of safety checks on vehicles and often find that cars and vans are not in tip-top condition. A failure by companies and their employees to ensure a vehicle’s safety-related equipment is in a first-class condition could be the difference between life and death.

Kwik-Fit Fleet Reports 20% More Tyre Safety Checks

Last year, Kwik-Fit Fleet carried out more than 220,000 vehicle inspections – up from 188,000 in 2006 – and this year the company expects its mobile technicians to undertake more than 250,000 tyre safety checks in company car parks or at a driver’s location of choice.

Initial tyre checks result in about 25 per cent of vehicles inspected requiring attention, usually tyres being replaced because they are illegal. Extrapolated across the UK’s three million-strong company car and approximately one million van parc it means that up to 800,000 vehicles could be running on at least one unsafe tyre.

Four US Michelin Plants Awarded for Workplace Safety

Four of Michelin’s US plants were recognised for excellence in worker health and safety at the Rubber Manufacturers Association’s (RMA) annual meeting, held April 13. Michelin’s US6/CPV facility in Greenville, South Carolina, received an Excellence award. Three Michelin plants – in Anderson and Spartanburg, South Carolina and Dothan, Alabama, received Improvement awards.

“Michelin takes great care to provide employees with a safe work environment,” said Dan Merchant, director of asset protection and safety. “It’s nice to have the industry recognise our safety results, which we have been able to achieve thanks to the measures put in place and the hard work of each of our manufacturing employees.”

Yokohama, AAA, RMA Team up in US to Promote Safety

In the US the Automobile Club of Southern California, Rubber Manufacturers Association, California Highway Patrol and Yokohama Tire Co. are joining forces during National Tire Safety Week to encourage drivers to check their vehicle’s tyre pressure in order to save fuel and increase safety.

The groups are distributing 13,500 “tyre tread depth cards” to consumers this week through the Auto Club’s local offices and Roadside Assistance providers. The Auto Club and RMA are also distributing “Tire Smart” brochures in AAA offices. AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities also will check tyres and pressure free of charge for members and the public during the week.

Mini the Top Movie Car Ever, Says Uniroyal

The three Mini Coopers from the 1969 box office hit ‘The Italian Job’ have been named the top movie cars of all time in a survey conducted by Uniroyal tyres. The popular Mk1 Austin Mini Cooper S’s in British blue, white and red beat off over twenty other nominees to take the number one spot in a poll of over 2,000 movie fans.

KITT, David Hasselhoff’s automotive sidekick in the early 80s television series ‘Knight Rider’, came in at number two, followed closely by James Bond’s glacier-friendly Aston Martin Vanquish from ‘Die Another Day’. The Volkswagen Beetle Herbie, also known as the Love Bug, crept into fourth place, while Dr Emmett Brown’s ever so slightly modified De Lorean DMC-12 from ‘Back to the Future’, took fifth.

Time To Hit The Acquisition Trail?

Hardly a day goes by without some tale or other of economic woe – the sub prime crisis, falling stock markets worldwide; all the indicators suggest that this is a time to batten down the hatches and ride out the storm. However, analysts Plimsoll Publishing have just produced their annual acquisition survey of the Tyre Manufacturers & Distributors industry and their message is that, for the strongest companies in the market, this could be the ideal time to buy a competitor.

What Does Your Car Colour Reveal?

Does the colour of the car you drive say anything about your chosen profession? Do the police have a bias for blue or undertakers have a predisposition for black?

Car insurance expert elephant.co.uk looked at data from over one million drivers to find out if particular professions prefer certain colour cars and discovered that you just might be able to tell someone’s job by looking at their car.

Blue proved to be the most popular colour all round with a quarter of motorists choosing the calming shade for their vehicle. However, living up to their ‘boys in blue’ name, the colour proved even more popular with the police who are over 7 per cent more likely to drive a blue car than the average motorist.

UK Drivers Amongst the Least Attentive to Tyre Pressure – Michelin

Michelin’s year long study into tyre pressure has revealed that the proportion of cars on British roads with tyres at an incorrect pressure could be as high as 80 per cent, and the pressure in the tyres of half of all cars is incorrect to an extent that renders the vehicle dangerous to operate and an accident risk.

The French manufacturer checked the tyre pressure of thousands of vehicles across 27 European Union countries during its ‘Fill up with Air’ campaign, and results indicate that the UK, ranked 25th out of 27, was near the bottom of the pile in terms of ensuring correct tyre pressure – only Greece and Latvia faired worse. And not only is road safety being jeopardised by our sloppy indifference – major cost implications follow incorrect tyre pressure through increased fuel consumption, a factor that also impacts on our environment.

Kwik-Fit Increases Mobile Fleet to Meet Growing Demand

Workplace safety is increasingly a high profile issue, and this is no less the case for professional drivers and those using company or fleet owned vehicles. Kwik-Fit Fleet reports carrying out more than 220,000 vehicle inspections during 2007, a total markedly up from the previous year’s 188,000. To cope with a growing demand to ensure at-work driver safety, Kwik-Fit Fleet is preparing to add an additional 30 units to its mobile fleet this year.

It is likely that the April 6 introduction of the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act will place added pressure upon businesses to comply with workplace health and safety legislation. Thus this year the company expects even stronger demand for its mobile service, and anticipates its mobile technicians to undertake more than 250,000 tyre safety checks in company car parks or at a driver’s location of choice.

Dębica Launches Passio 2 Mileage Tyre

Dębica has launched a new passenger car tyre aimed at the mileage market. The Dębica Passio 2 summer tyre is the latest addition to the Passio product line, which is one of the most popular summer tyres in Poland, according to the Polish manufacturer (owned by the Goodyear group).

Dębica Passio 2 is said to offer a 16 per cent higher mileage performance than its predecessor. According to the manufacturer, the tyre shows improved performance in almost all characteristics, including driving and braking on wet surfaces as well as higher resistance to aquaplaning. Consequently, Dębica Passio 2 offers compact and mid-size cars improved performance on all road surfaces.

Michelin Putting a Better Smile on Employees’ Faces

Michelin has reportedly began to provide its UK employees with a part-funded dental plan intended to counter ever-increasing National Health Service costs. According to the publication Employee Benefits, the company reviewed its existing cash plan last year, and asked staff whether a dental plan would be of interest. The response from employees was, Michelin decided, sufficient to implement such a scheme.

“The survey was to gauge how much interest there would be” said Michelin’s benefits manager Julie Lovett, “and we didn’t get a fantastic response but it was enough to get us a meaningful set of results, so that’s the route we are going down.” Employees have already been sent information about the dental plan.

Bike Tyrestore Wins British Dealer News Award

Bike Tyrestore (BTS) has won the “Best Trade Service” award during the British Dealer News Industry Awards ceremony, following day one of the 2008 Motorcycle Trade Expo Show. Presented by industry personality Peter Gleave, the trophy was presented to Bike Tyrestore’s Managing Director, Peter Smith. The award follows a survey of motorbike tyre dealers (conducted by British Dealer News) that resulted in BTS being described as the best trade service. During the presentation citation BTS was described as being “recognised not just for its excellent service but for the breadth of its service.” The citation continued: “Next day delivery and competitive pricing is normal these days, but this company goes the extra mile with a free phone order service, free technical training for dealers’ staff, a weekly trade newsletter and customer invitations to their highly popular track days.”
