New Features Added to TireVigil System

Tyre pressure monitoring and asset management producer TireStamp Inc. has announced the addition of two new features to its TireVigil tyre pressure management solution for fleet customers, a system that detects tyre problems, alerts the fleet to them and makes recommendations to the service technician for corrective actions.

The number one issue with other electronic TPMS systems, says TireStamp, is that reprogramming tyres that are changed is difficult and time consuming. TireVigil now directly addresses this problem with a simple yet powerful system. TireVigil Servicing allows a service technician to view the state of a vehicle’s tyres at a glance on any internet enabled computer or hand-held wireless device. Clear images of the vehicle’s tyres are shown, displaying tyre position, tyre pressure and temperature, target tyre pressure, sensor and tyre ID. The tyre make, model and mileage can also be accessed. The tyre technician can enter tyre changes and rotations quickly and easily with a touch on the screen or a click of a mouse. Manual data entry is virtually eliminated, reports TireStamp.

Drivers Downsize As Credit Crunch Bites

Over a third of used car buyers are looking to counteract rising motoring charges and challenging economic conditions by downsizing to a smaller, more cost-effective car. In a survey carried out on www.glass.co.uk – the Glass’s Guide used car valuation website, 38 per cent of buyers cited fuel prices and rises in road tax for heavier polluting vehicles as factors motivating them to swap their car for a more compact and efficient model.

The poll also revealed that a growing number of motorists are switching to diesel as a way of cutting running costs. Of those surveyed, 29 per cent stated an intention to exchange their petrol vehicle for a diesel model, expecting to take advantage of significant reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption.

Pirelli Notes High Marks in JD Power Satisfaction Survey

Pirelli in the US reports it is one of only two tyre brands to have scored above the industry average in this year’s Tire Satisfaction Index in the 2008 J.D. Power & Associates Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study. Pirelli’s index score improved over last year and was ranked second only to Michelin among the 14 major tyre brands in the study, which – notes Pirelli – included major players such as Goodyear, Continental and Bridgestone.

Pirelli’s Scorpion Range Rated Highly in Consumer Survey

The Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow and ATR tyres have been ranked first in their respective categories by customers of US e-tailer TireRack.com. In addition, the latter was voted the highest performer among all-terrain tyres by a leading consumer magazine in their November 2008 issue.

The Scorpion ATR scored highly with consumers thanks to its “impressive handling dynamics in wet and dry conditions, cornering stability, noise and comfort, snow traction and its resistance to hydroplaning.” The tyre features a very aggressive symmetrical all-terrain tread, designed to optimise comfort and wear while keeping its all-terrain traction characteristics. The ATR’s special tread compound provides enhanced noise reduction, wear uniformity and aquaplaning resistance. The tyre is available in 15-24″ fitments, either as original equipment or replacement.

Pirelli P4 Four Season Gets Top Marks

Pirelli’s P4 Four Season tyre received the top rating in Tire Rack’s online consumer survey of standard touring all-season tyres.

Tire Rack customers were asked their opinions of tyres across 12 categories, including hydroplaning resistance, wet traction, cornering stability, dry traction, noise/comfort, steering response and other parameters such as light or heavy snow traction, ice traction and whether or not the customer would consider purchasing the tyres again.

Pirelli said its P4 Four Season rated highest in 10 of the 12 categories. Some 28 tyre models were considered in the opinion survey. (Tire Review/Akron)

Car Ownership Becoming a Love/Hate Relationship

With more vehicles per capita than our European counterparts, some people have romantically described the UK as a nation of car lovers. However, according to a survey carried out by GfK NOP in conjunction with Nationwide Autocentre, it appears that Britain’s love affair with cars is dwindling, with nearly 30 per cent of men and 20 per cent of women now actually resenting their vehicles.

Rising fuel costs and road tax (74 and 53% respectively) were cited as the main reason for the ill feeling. However, those in the tyre industry will be interested to hear learn that 39 per cent of motorists resent their car due to its environmental impact more than even the congestion charge. In addition to the growing trend towards smaller new car sizes, it seems that economical tyres are also likely to grow in popularity – 50 per cent of the country is spending money on essentials like food and clothing instead of maintaining their vehicles.

Credit Crunch Impacting Tyre Sales

With new car registrations at a historic low point, new evidence suggests money conscious consumers are cutting corners when it comes to tyres. According to a report released by independent tyre dealer network Protyre, there is mounting evidence that motorists are delaying replacing worn and defective tyres. This false economy is putting drivers, passengers and other road users in danger of an accident or the potential for prosecution.

Protyre’s survey reveals that over three quarters of motorists visiting their 31 outlets had at least one defective or badly worn tyre, up dramatically on a year ago. Protyre technicians have also discovered that drivers of family cars seem to be more responsible than owners of premium vehicles, with a lower percentage of family cars having more than one defective tyre compared with premium models – the cars usually fitted with lower profile tyres.

BAT RF Launches Automated CV Tyre Management System in the UK

A computerised tyre management system developed in the US by BAT RF is now being launched in the UK market. The system brings together a series of active RF (radio frequency) components to provide truck and bus fleets with real-time data for tyre inflation, fuel consumption and asset identification. All data can be viewed in real time through the BAT RF website or integrated into existing fleet management software.

A survey carried out in mid-July by BAT RF UK with a large UK fleet operator found that 44 per cent of all tyres were under inflated by more than five per cent, which has a significant detrimental effect on tyre life and fuel consumption. The survey also found that 64 per cent of dual tyres on tractor units were more than five per cent out of balance. This results in one tyre running hotter than the other on the same axle and eventually failing. Initial indications are that many UK truck and bus fleets are facing similar challenges in monitoring and managing tyre pressures cost effectively.

Michelin Ranked Highest in Satisfaction Survey

For the 11th time, Michelin earned the highest ranking in the J.D. Power and Associates 2008 Original Equipment Tire Customer Satisfaction Study. This year, Michelin’s study scores averaged 38 points higher than the industry average in each segment, the tyremaker said.

Michelin has topped the rankings in all four award segments including Luxury/Sport, Pick-up/Full-size Van, Mass Market/Non-Luxury Sport and SUV. The 2008 results bring Michelin’s total to an unprecedented 56 awards in the U.S., the company said. (Tire Review/Akron)

Study Reveals Tyre Safety – and In-Car Toilets – Important to Motorists

The people at Protyre were curious to know what motorists really want from their car. After all, many a man – and more than a few women – salivate after the type of hi-tech gadgetry tucked away in the latest James Bond car or those driven by the rich and famous. So Protyre conducted a survey and found that, yes, for a large number of us, the options list regulars such as air conditioning and satnav just don’t fire the imagination at new car purchasing time.

RAC Foundation, NTDA Offering Free Tyre Aging Checks

According to the RAC Foundation, up to three million UK motorists could be risking tyre problems during this summer season by not checking the age and condition of their tyres. The motoring organisation made this statement on July 31, at the commencement of an eight-week tyre safety campaign urging drivers of low-mileage vehicles to have their tyres inspected.

A survey of 500 motorists, performed by GfK NOP for the RAC Foundation between July 11 and 13, reveals that although nine out of ten drivers understand the link between tyre age and road safety, up to three million – more than the populations of Greater Manchester or the West Midlands – may not. Furthermore, six out of ten (59 per cent) say they are unlikely to check vital tyre age information contained on the sidewall.

Birmingham Trading Standards Calls for Closer Tyre Repair Controls

Officers from Birmingham City Council’s Trading Standards have called for greater controls on tyre workshops in the city after some were reportedly found to be performing unsafe repairs. This demand was made following a free two-day training course, during which workshop staff failed to correctly repair more than half the punctures they were presented with.

Russian 6-Month Tyre Production Stable

Russian passenger car tyre production has remained flat in the first half of 2008. Compared with January to June 2007, production fell 0.1 per cent to 13.8 million tyres, according to details of a Federal State Statistics Service report published by the Prime-Tass news agency. The same survey found that truck and bus tyre output fell 0.6 per cent to 5.56 million units in the same period. During 2007 as a whole car tyre output in Russia reportedly rose 6 per cent to 29.3 million units.
