Survey Unearths Safety Sloppiness Amongst Company Car Drivers

A survey conducted by TyreSafe has again shone a spotlight onto the UK motoring public’s inability to regularly check tyre tread depth. The organisation probed a sample group of 1,552 company car drivers from across the UK and was astounded to find an alarming 25 per cent had never – ever – checked the depth of their vehicle’s tyre tread. A further 41 per cent had not deigned their own safety and that of others sufficient reason to kneel down and take a look under the wheel arches during the last six months. Yet, notes TyreSafe, responsibility for tyre safety on fleet vehicles is the responsibility of both companies and employees, and those not making the necessary checks face fines and other penalties. To simplify the task of checking tyre tread, companies are being encouraged to promote TyreSafe’s ‘lifesaver in your pocket’ initiative – which encourages simple monthly checks using a 20p coin – to their employees.

RiDE and MCN Readers Rate Avon Tyres

Motor Cycle News readers voted the Avon Storm ST third in their choice of tyre in the popular sports touring sector. The tyre also scored the third highest average number of miles before replacement and showed a big saving on the tyres in first and second place. The votes were from MCN readers – with more than 12,000 taking part and making it Britain’s biggest biking survey and the most comprehensive review of kit and accessories in the UK.

Meanwhile, in RiDE’s annual 2009 RiDER Power Survey issue, the Avon Storm ST came third, above the likes of Michelin’s Pilot Power 2CT, Dunlop’s RoadSmart and Bridgestone fitments: BT-021, 016, 020 and 014. Also, in the category for longevity for front tyres the Storm ST came in third place, ably backed up by the Azaro ST in fifth place and the Avon Viper Sport in sixth. For rear tyres the Azaro ST took fourth place with the Storm ST in fifth, making it another successful RiDER Power for Avon Tyres.

Growth in Fuel Efficient Tyre Interest: Study

(Tire Review) Tyre companies are hawking the fuel efficiency of their latest tyres, and the buying public is apparently warming up to the concept. According to a new Babcox Research survey of independent tyre dealers in the USA, 66 per cent of tyre buyers view a tyre’s fuel efficiency as at least “important” in their tyre selection process, up from only 47 per cent in 2008. Eight percent said fuel efficiency was their “most important” criteria, up from just 1 per cent last year. Another 35 per cent see a tyre’s fuel efficiency as “important” to them (up from 31 per cent in 2008), and 23 per cent see it as “pretty important,” up from 15 per cent last year. Still, 44 per cent rate fuel efficiency as “not very important” or “not important at all,” down from 52 per cent in 2008.

Safety Features Key to TPMS Acceptance – Survey

Tyre pressure monitoring systems will be fitted standard on all new cars from 2012, and according to a study supported by Northern Ireland based remote tyre pressure monitoring systems manufacturer Schrader Electronics, the majority of UK motorists support the use of systems similar to those the company produces. Results indicate the level of public support for TPMS hinges upon how quickly and readily a system notifies drivers of tyre pressure irregularities.

TyreSafe Points Out Irresponsible Regions

New research conducted by safety organisation TyreSafe shows that drivers in East Anglia and the North West are among the most likely to be involved in a tyre related car accident. Nearly one in four drivers in these regions have never checked the depth of their tyre tread. TyreSafe's research was conducted in August 2009 among 1552 motorists across the UK and found drivers in Wales were found to be the most responsible. Here, 40 per cent claimed to have checked their tyre tread depth within the last month, the maximum period recommended between checks. This was closely followed by drivers in Scotland where nearly four in ten drivers performed checks.

Johnson Controls Targets Bangers with ‘Black Dynamic’ Battery

Many of us have been strapped for cash at some time or another, and the recession has left large numbers of people financially smarting throughout the UK. Despite the extended scrappage scheme, more drivers have been prompted to hang onto their cars for longer periods of time. Johnson Controls is catering to this growth market with its Varta-branded Black Dynamic battery, and will begin shipping this product to independent workshops and repairers this autumn.

Yokohama Philippines Extends Help to Typhoon Victims

Yokohama Tire Philippines (YTPI) is lending a hand to the victims of the Mt. Arayat mudslide, which was brought about by Typhoon Ondoy. As part of the company’s relief operations, on October 2 YTPI employees gave each affected family at the Arayat, Pampanga evacuation area a set of equipment including a mat, mosquito net, blanket, pail and charcoal stove. Approximately 297 families, left homeless after the mudslide, received assistance from YTPI.

Online Tyre Sales Still a Mid Range Market

With 70 per cent of us now having access to the Internet, and consumers making an average of 2.1 virtual purchases a month, maintaining the right online presence is as important as ever. According to the 2009 Oxford Internet Survey, the two most common online activities are researching product purchases and actually buying them (about 80 per cent of web users having done each). However with a multitude of distractions out there in cyberspace, tyre businesses have developed complex e-marketing strategies designed to lure customers to their sites with low prices, before up-selling them onto more expensive products. Some of the clearest evidence to date shows that the Internet is an increasingly competitive mid-range market, not a budget bargain basement as some say.

Comparing online price monitoring data with the results of market research conducted by Encircle Marketing shows that national fast fits continue to be the most expensive places to buy, with tyres costing £86.22 between January and August 2009. No surprises there. The fact that tyres are cheapest at pure e-tailers (£65.91) on average, won’t surprise many either. In fact, with the exception of average prices at autocentres rising to meet those at car dealerships (£78.68 and £79.18 respectively) the pattern is pretty much the same as it was last year.

Two Michelin Tyres in RiDER Power top 10

Readers of RiDE Magazine voted the Michelin Pilot Road 2 as their number one tyre in the magazine’s 2009 RiDER Power survey. The Michelin Pilot Power 2CT was the highest-rated sports tyre, coming in at number four in the top ten. Each year, thousands of readers vote for their favourite bikes and products and this year’s results were published in the November 2009 issue of the magazine, which is renown for its stringent product tests.

The Michelin Pilot Road 2 dual compound sports touring tyre is designed for high mileage combined and performance in wet grip. Also benefiting from the same 2CT (2 Compound-Technology) the Michelin Pilot Power 2CT is a high-performance sports tyre designed for fast road riding and occasional track-day use.

Commenting on the results, Olivier Gros, Michelin’s UK Director of Motorcycle Tyres said: “This is a great result for Michelin as it recognises the amount of work that goes into making our tyres such good all-round performers. What makes it really special is that this recognition comes directly from our customers who are actually using our tyres in the real world, out on the UK’s roads.”

Kraiburg Survey Finds Partners “Very Pleased”

The majority of Kraiburg’s partners are more than satisfied with their retreading materials supplier, according to a survey conducted by the Austrian based company. The survey questioned 30 key account customers in the European market. Topics such as service, products, package value and suggestions or criticism were discussed in personal interviews. Marks were awarded from 1 for very good to 5 for unsatisfied. The average total mark was 1.63.

The Austrian company reportedly fared well in sales service, office and logistics departments (average mark 1.38) or availability and competence of the technical service (1.28). The same applies also to responses on the quality of the company’s cold and hot material (1.34 and 1.33 respectively).

IAM Issues "Check Your Tyres" Warning

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has advised motorists planning a long journey to take a thorough look at their tyres. According to the IAM, 10 per cent of cars on UK roads have at least one tyre with an illegal tread depth, which means reduced braking effectiveness, increased risk of collision and the risk of a fine and points on the driver's licence.

Stopping distances double on wet roads and the risk of a skid can be trebled if the tread depth is only at the legal minimum of 1.6 mm – and this risk increases seven-fold when the tread depth is less than 0.5 mm, says the IAM, adding: "if you have to brake hard on one of the 10 per cent of road surfaces with below average skid resistance, the skid risk rises by around 50 per cent."

Study Reveals High Proportion of Dangerously Worn Tyres in Use

If Doctor Foster had gone to Gloucester in 2009 he’d have had more to worry about than puddles. According to a three-month study carried out by the Chris Mullins Tyres, more than three quarters of motorists in the southwest town are leaving it too late before they replace worn, damaged and potentially dangerous tyres. Staff at the Gloucester based tyre specialist found that almost 77 per cent of the 3,050 tyres they examined from cars, 4x4s and light vans between May and the end of July were already worn below the legal limit of 1.6mm.

Swinton Survey Outs Van Tyre Safety Ignorance

According to a recent poll of 1,000 commercial van driving customers, Swinton Insurance has revealed that 25 per cent of the segment never checked the condition or tread of their tyres, while 42 per cent did not know the correct legal tread depth.

Superbrands Survey Acknowledges Top Industry Marques

Superbrands has released its 2009 Superbrands and Business Superbrands survey results, and several familiar names appear in the respective top 500 lists this year. Tyre manufacturer Michelin appears in the 88th spot and Pirelli at number 154. The trio of tyre Superbrands is rounded off by Dunlop, occupying the 265th position this year.

Business Superbrands – which began in 1995 – lists the UK’s strongest business-to-business brands as voted for by independent experts on the Business Superbrands Council and more than 1,500 individual business professionals from across the country. Our three tyre Superbrands were also present in this category – Michelin in eighth spot, Pirelli at number 20 and Dunlop at 53. They are joined by Bridgestone in the 54th spot and Snap-on Tools at 193.

Autocar Survey: Tailgaters Most Irritating

A survey involving 14,500 AA members has indicated that the most irritating habit of road users is that of tailgating. 36 per cent of the sample group told Populus, in conjunction with the AA, that “close following” was the worst of the idiotic pieces of driving seen on Britain’s roads. The survey heralds the arrival of the latest drive to improve the standard of driving in the UK, the Autocar/AA Drive Better Campaign.

The AA’s president told Autocar that tailgating was also a very dangerous bad habit: “Survey respondents were spot on to highlight their irritation with tailgaters. Data reveals that leaving pure human error aside tailgaters fall just behind ‘loss of control’ as the major cause of crashes. It’s a problem not only on motorways but also on dual carriageways, country lanes and in road works. Some tailgate to bully drivers out of the way, others because they just don’t think of the potentially tragic consequences of their actions.”
