It’s been a double victory for the home team as Continental receives first place in two German magazine polls. The tyre maker says, as you may expect, that it is very pleased with the results of the AutoBild and Auto Zeitung reader surveys.
The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been recognised as the world’s most admired motor vehicle parts company by Fortune magazine. The tyre maker rose from third place last year to top the current category list on the 2014 World’s Most Admired Companies list, and was ranked first within its category in five of the nine the key evaluated attributes: people management, use of assets, social responsibility, long-term investment and product/service quality. Goodyear’s overall score was 7.09. Michelin, the only other tyre maker named in the motor vehicle parts category, dropped two places since last year to number six and gained an overall score of 5.93.
Survey results don’t necessarily paint a flattering picture of UK motorists, and the outcome of the latest research from Kwik Fit is no exception. The fast fit network commissioned Consumer Intelligence to survey a group representative of the British motoring public, and it turns out that nine per cent of the 2,002 adults surveyed admitted they weren’t even aware that an MoT certificate is a legal requirement for cars over three years old. An equal number didn’t realise car insurance is compulsory and ten per cent said the same about a valid tax disc.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists is warning drivers about the dangers of distracted driving after research found that nearly one in ten (nine per cent) of drivers admit to crashing their cars because they were distracted. Just under one in twenty drivers (four per cent) say that someone was injured in the crash.
The survey results weren’t quite as close as those for the referendum in Essen, Germany, where a “majority” of 50.4 per cent voted against renovations to the Messe Essen site. Yet there was also no clear majority in the survey held in Germany by our sister publication Neue Reifenzeitung, and only slightly more respondents voted in favour of a tyre exhibition in Cologne as opposed to Essen, where the Reifen show is currently held.
A survey by The Parts Alliance has revealed that garage owners are feeling confident about the future with many planning to invest in equipment and training, and some looking to take on extra staff. Some 67 per cent of those who responded said they expected the first half of 2014 to see an upturn in trade and, looking further ahead, some 73 per cent felt ‘very confident’ about the year as a whole. The survey was conducted among garages belonging to the Servicesure Autocentre garage programme run by The Parts Alliance.
TyreSafe shares that Falken Tyre Europe GmbH is the latest tyre maker to sign up as a member. Punning the avian ring to the tyre maker’s name, the tyre safety organisation’s chairman commented that “it’s fantastic news to welcome Falken to the TyreSafe nest thanks to the sterling work they’re already doing.”

A study by Halfords Autocentres suggests that motoring goodwill has been in short supply this Christmas. The research found that drivers are concerned about the levels of impatient, aggressive and inconsiderate driving – which they say increases at this time of year.
Almost a quarter of motorists (23 per cent) who took part in the research said they felt that unfriendly, bad tempered behaviour – such as failing to allow drivers out at junctions, lane hogging and not indicating – is a major issue during the winter months.

The results of a survey commissioned by TyreSafe and telematics-linked insurer ingenie highlights the risk younger drivers place themselves at by neglecting regular tyre maintenance. Over a third of the 1,000 respondents, all aged between 18 and 25 years old, said they’d never checked their tyres’ tread depth, while two out of three hadn’t checked their tread within the last month, the maximum recommended period between checks.
