In-car gadgets responsible for increased road traffic accidents

The Department for Transport recently announced that the number of deaths and serious injuries on Britain’s road rose by 4 per cent to nearly 25,000 in 2014, with some commentators suggesting that in-car technology is distracting drivers behind the wheel. This concern is echoed in consumer research undertaken by BCA, Europe’s leading used vehicle marketplace, which found that 95 per cent of respondents had seen other motorists using a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving.

IGA works with DfT on MOT fee review

The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is assisting the Department for Transport (DfT) with a project to reassess statutory MOT test fees. The DfT is analysing garage running costs to validate the justification for an increase in MOT test fees to present to the next government, but to make this happen it needs financial costings for MOT test stations as a starting point to the project.

Men and Londoners most likely to give thumbs up to driverless cars

The Government has confirmed that changes to road regulations and car maintenance checks will be necessary to accommodate driverless cars, but new research published today by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) shows that an even bigger shift will be required in public acceptance of driverless cars.

MWSD welcomes DfT report, questions overall findings

Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD) has welcomed the Department for Transport’s report into wheel safety and the government’s classification of CV wheels as ‘safety critical’. However the company remains sceptical of the report’s findings and industry awareness of the issue. MWSD has long campaigned for legislation requiring operators to carry out more stringent checks on commercial vehicle wheels to be introduced.

Lack of confidence in garage professionals to blame for motorists driving defective cars says IMI

Road safety charity, Brake and Direct Line have released data on drivers’ attitudes when it comes to vehicle safety checks and basic maintenance. Almost half of respondents admitted to driving with at least one risky vehicle problem or defect. The IMI, the professional body for the motor industry which is campaigning for the licensing of the retail motor trade, believes fears of being over-charged or given poor service by garages are probably contributing to motorists’ attitudes.

MPs “unprepared for driverless future” says report

MPs are yet to grasp the impact of modern vehicle technology on the motor industry says the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). The comments came after a Dods Polling survey into MPs’ attitudes to driverless cars revealed a “general lack of knowledge amongst our legislators on the impact of autonomous vehicles.”

Parents see themselves as good driving role models – even when they’re not

The following doesn’t apply to you, as your positive appraisal of your own driving skills absolutely matches the reality – but you may be interested to know that while other parents think they are good role models on the road, they may in fact have a negative influence on their children’s future driving habits. This titbit of information was gleaned by Goodyear in its study of over 6,800 parents of novice drivers (aged 16 to 25) from 19 countries. The survey’s results form part of the tyre maker’s ‘Driving Safety First: Improving road safety for novice drivers’ white paper.

Groupauto launch national garage survey

Kumho Tyre launches new customer-facing website

Kumho.co.uk on mobile, tablet, laptop

Kumho Tyre’s new customer-facing corporate website has been launched. The new site focuses on providing a better browsing experience for those visiting on mobile devices, an approach the tyre manufacturer calls a “mobile first, fully responsive perspective”. As a result of this responsive design, the site adapts automatically to suit the size of the user’s screen. Kumho claims this resulted in a 50 per cent increase in the amount of mobile traffic to the website in its first week, with early feedback saying 96 per cent of visitors “would recommend” the site, from 1,000 unique surveys. The site’s usability and design attractiveness have also been rated at least “good” by more than 98 per cent of respondents.

Dumfries drivers are UK’s most satisfied with their cars

Dumfries drivers are the happiest with their cars rating them higher overall than anywhere else in the UK. Meanwhile, car owners in Rochester rated their cars lowest on a national car review conducted by WeLoveAnyCar.com. The car review site, with 137,860 car reviews, has produced the UK’s first local car owner satisfaction index showing that car owners rate their cars differently according to where they live. The table, reproduced below, has been publicised in the run up to the National Car Awards in September.
